I like how carefully the creators approached the powers of the characters in this comic. It's really surprising. I didn't expect this from a crossover
This fight was the beginning of Thor's loooooong decline in relevance that has only recently started to reverse. Before this fight, Thor was legendary for his resiliance and ability to endure anything that anyone threw at him. After this fight, writer after writer after writer had Thor getting knocked out cold by people and things that had no business pulling that off. Its like writers assumed that if Superman could do it, anyone could do it; which completely misrepresents Thor AND Superman.
Yeah, I was always mad about the stupid heat vision attack. Thor has been attacked by energy blasts hundreds of times in hundreds of stories, even as far back as when this story took place. He would have used the hammer to block the heat vision. He's also taken dozens of direct blows from a Bannerless mindless raging Hulk, who's strength was pretty much infinite, and didn't get knocked out. Superman one shotting him was dumb.
@@Goldenbane Well, I should clarify, I don't have a problem with Superman winning. My issue is how subsequent writers treated that feat. That it took someone of Superman's caliber to beat Thor definitively is a testament to BOTH of them, but subsequent writers interpreted it as Thor having a glass jaw.
@@EclipseCircle Didn't mean for my reply to come off like I was complaining that Thor lost, rather Superman's victory was way too easy. I just felt this fight made Thor look extremely stupid, and as you said, like he had a glass jaw (which he doesn't have). I can imagine Superman fans would be saying a lot of similar things if the roles were reversed: "WHAT??? Superman just waded into Thor's giant lightning blast like an idiot instead of using super speed to dodge?? And then Thor just bashed him in the face with one hammer strike, and Superman went out?? Superman is arguably the most badass out of Marvel and DC. In Thor's realm gods are or should be the highest entity. In Superman's "realm" a god is just another alien albeit a powerful alien and since Kryptonians are the top dog it make since that Superman could defeat Thor although I would've had Thor blocking superman's vision with his hammer definitely would not have Superman stopping Thor's hammer blow with his hand.
So? What's your point. Those aren't the most powerful Avengers ever, and not even top tier Marvel Heroes. Silver Surfer could literally drain Superman's solar battery. The Hulk's not there. No Dr. Strange.
I think alot of individuals on this thread and in general seem to forget that Superman is a FICTIONAL character and he is as powerful as the writers make him - It is common knowledge that Kurk Busiek received a major position with DC after this assignment 🤔🤔
I understand why Superman had to win the 1-on-1 fight against Thor simply because he's the most popular heavyweight character in comics period. What I don't like is how Superman decked Thor and rendered him unconscious with one single blow. Thor has only been knocked out one other time from an old story I can remember reading by a virtually equal opponent and that was more of a sucker punch. Again, I and many fans understood why Superman had to win this1-on-1 fight against Thor.
No the fight wasn't chosen by favoritism or by the fans stop running off If that was right batman would easily deafet captain america who wasn't even superhuman in that time and was always weaker than even his live action versio😂 But they both had draw
@@GreenEagle-p7z Batman's not easily defeating Captain America in a straight up fight. Batman admitted he would lose to Captain America. Yes, I'm certain Batman would make Captain America eat some knockout gas or hit him with a nerve agent from his tackle belt if it wasn't a straight up fight. And again, Superman defeats Thor because he's the more popular character and the writers chose that. If Thor defeated Superman in this story, the uproar would have been through the roof and the Editors in Chief know this. Superman wins due to the fact he's the oldest modern superhero. Deep down you know this, but don't want to admit it.
My favorite part of this crossover was Pietro on the dc earth finally tapping into the speed force briefly. Most of these issues Wanda was amped (this was long before he No More Mutants) and Flash was depowered. Still it's a fun story with stunning art by Perez
I loved this comic. Especially the Avengers reaction to thor losing. I remember reading an issue where either cap or iron man was team lead, and they said clear a path for thor even if you get hurt in the process just do it. So, to see the Avenger's respond this way makes sense to me.
@anthonnynavarro8486 that's been on my mind a long time ! I've always wondered how to do it justice since it's so good. But I will take a Crack at it !
Main/canon superman(s) usually resist magic and even Kryptonite. Usually it's only elseworlds/alternate versions that are effect by either magic or Kryptonite as dumb as that is. Superboy prime is equal to pre crisis superman (a past main/canon superman). He laughed in mordru's face at a full effort magic attack and has resisted reality warp/manipulation. The current main/canon superman has resisted Kryptonite, haxes like being turned into salt or attacks that target the soul directly, punched his way out a dimension that is completely immaterial (imagine punching a ghost that can phase through shit and it shatters), time travelled, punched a 6th dimensional god unconscious, resisted reality manipulation, resisted fate manipulation, resisted soul manipulation, resisted matter manipulation, resisted existence erasure, etc. All the main superman(s) are busted, but the current one is a fusion of all the previous ones so he's extra busted. Even if we ignore him because he's basically a composite, all the previous main supermans like silver era, post crisis, etc are still pretty broken and aren't effected by magic much or at all depending on how far along their respective histories they are. Main/canon Thor(s) are also pretty fucking busted, but usually have variants that are stronger than the main one. I don't think variants like quantum superman, strange visitor superman, etc beat any main superman. Rune king Thor I think is stronger than the 616 Thor at the time of their runs. I honestly don't know if any version of 616/main canon Thor stack up to rune king Thor.
@@blackchecker2009 idk who would win then since both current canon supes and rune king Thor are soo busted you'd need to cross reference a bunch of shit to maybe argue for who you want to win. Not knowledgeable enough about either characters to really tell.

Still Love how the Avengers were using teamwork and kicking some League ass in the big fight.....No offense JLA ,I love you guys too😊

DC agreed that Thor deals easily with Super, and that as a result he has to fight by underestimating his opponent in order to be defeated. Get over it.
Well this is another level of glaze. This comic was made a while back. The characters have gotten much stronger. Thor has the odinforce now and would clap the shit out of Superman
Hulk has always been a favorite. BUT.....Superman is too fast if the writers actually write according to power levels. Picture Thor hitting Superman as hard as he can. Thors punch is roughly equal to Superman's durability, I.e. almost no damage. Now consider Superman punching Thor as hard as he can, With Thor being able to tank 75% of the hit, he is damaged. 5 of these hits should put Thor down, with Superman unfazed. UNLESS each of Thors hits come from Mjolnir, which should do 150% damage. Then Superman drops. BUT, we have still not written in Superman's speed! Superman would dodge every attack depending on reaction time. And since power=strength × speed, imagine one of his punches thrown at the speed of light, everything he hits would be atomized! The only drawback being that his own durability wouldn't stand up to it, and you would have an armless Superman in a nanosecond. But nothing could prevent Superman from throwing a light Three Stooges eyepoke to temporarily blind every single Avenger temporarily. Good story written in a satisfying way. But fanboys gonna fanboy.
@bigd7696 True, but eh, seeing how Hulk can fight people like Red Hulk who can battle people like the silver surfer and tank molecular destroying attacks, I doubt Superdrop him or kill him. Just irritating him into become more enraged, which = hulks power increase.
Thor nerfed feel bad for him, even the current Thor is the most powerful version, glad that they won't do a crossover anymore because the Meatriding is crazy
Current Thor is far from the most powerful. The marvel playground is smaller but current Thor is entirely unimpressive. Skyfather ain't what it used to be.
@@Bob_Reynolds when I say smaller I'm referring to how the hierarchy of all of Marvel has broken down. The ceiling isn't as high as it was. When a Celestial showed up it used to be a big deal. Living Tribunal used to be a big deal. Odin used to be a big deal. Now none of these things are true and current Thor can get suffocated by the Hulks arm regeneration. Power levels at Marvel have become meaningless. So people think they are more powerful but in actual feats, in awe inspiring stories and set pieces there just isn't anything crazy. Just inconsistencies. King Thor ruler of Earth was far more impressive.
That's why Thor would leave the team on the coming issue of Avengers 15 because Al Ewing is focused in his current run and so he can explore more Thor cosmology and no one else used him because obviously they will nerf him @thehelldragon314
I need to see an updated fight with some of the modern JLA and Avengers. Vixen, Storm, Wolverine, Jade, Supergirl, Miss Martian, Cyborg, Hulk, Red Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Fire, Ice, Zuri, Namor, Batwoman, Falcon, Black Lightening, Spiderman, Mockingbird, Wong, Dr. Light, Spiderwoman, Hawkgirl, Constantine, Dr. Strange, Dr. Fate etc. Throw in The Guardians of the Galaxy and the Teen Titans and it would be epic.
This is ridiculous, Venom can't even hurt Superman. Because Superman is very durable against Venom. Plus, Venom has a weakness to heat and sound. And Superman can do both. That comic is ridiculous.
Bruh why are people fighting in the comments over who would win, I want to see Thor and Superman fight together not each other, honestly the argument is so tiring at his point for any super hero fight, it just goes like this, "said character is weak to this, but in said comic he isn't, but this version is crazy strong, and other said version is crazy stronger" Like at this point no one will ever agree who will win and honestly it makes no sense to compare and pit them against each other
The thing is, back then and maybe today, Marvel and DC Comics had/have an agreement where when a top tiered hero from one magazine faces off against a lower tiered hero from another magazine the lower tiered character can never win, and when two top tiered heros from different companies appear inthe same book the two must team up. Back then, Thor was a lesser tiered character. Marvel's consistent A-List hero was Spiderman, and then for a while Logan/Wolverine, and DC's consitent heroes were Superman and Batman and sometimes Wonder Woman. If Thor were to face against Superman today, it would either be a teamup episode or Thor would defeat Superman. It seems DC is shying away from Superman and is trying to place Supergirl or Superwoman into his role, so he may not be a top tiered hero any longer, but Thor is. Who know if that agreement is still active.
Always got this question, WHERE ARE THE OTHER GODS during these types of crisis?!? Odin and Zeus standing by watching while Krona makes up his mind whether to destroy either universe?!? Rao also should've made an appearance to give aide in stopping Krona.
Taking into account Superman's history, the fact that he was the first modern superhero, and importance in comics and cultural significance, plus that for all intents and purposes he's probably the main symbol of DC Comics, there was simply no way to let him to lose to Thor. It would be an unforgivable sin on the part of the writers and publishers. Superman had to win.
Certainly wouldn't have been the first time a lightning bolt has put Supes down for the count. But Marvel writers have a long and storied history of writing Thor, God of Hammers, not Thor, God of Thunder.

This crossover has very good and classical artwork, but the writing is very, very bad. The characters here (because they are too many) are presented as rudimentary versions of themselves, for example Thor is a brute with a hammer, Superman is stronk and can shoot lasers from his eyes, Martian Manhunter and Vision are presented like they are the same character but they are completely different, Flash vs Quicksilver is absurd (light speed vs speed of sound?), Batman vs Cap is ALWAYS a stalemate...they literally cancel each other out. But why, doesn't Batman have sleeping gas or numerous other gadgets? He just forgets to use them. There are many examples why this story sucks (as a story). All these characters have insane abilities, but when fighting each other, they mostly use their fists/kicks etc. Why doesn't Martian Manhunter just invade everyone's mind? People forget that he's basically Professor X+Vision+Superman. 😜
I tend to agree with you, but the fact is that involving so many characters in a 4-part story requires this type of subterfuge. There is no way to properly explore this variety of characters, unless the number of publications was much greater.

Not to mention Thor has thousands of years of battle/fight experience. Honestly don't think Superman would've landed a punch based on that.
@@EclipseCircle Didn't mean for my reply to come off like I was complaining that Thor lost, rather Superman's victory was way too easy. If Marvel and DC agreed to do a serious fight between Thor and Superman, and even agreed that Superman should win, such a battle should last several issues all on its own. He's been clobbered by Doomsday who's a billion times stronger than Thor and didn't get knocked out..." etc, etc, etc.
@@Doc-Holiblazeyour point is irrelevant because Superman has fought by WW and Thors side in dc for a thousand years in a dimensional rift so time on the outside has no effect , besides having literal experience with others , lol idk how the misconception of one not knowing how to fight comes up , I could very well flip it on to you and say based on speed differences Thor shouldn’t be able to land 1 hit on Superman since supes is millions of times faster than Thor in all stats , combat , travel , etc.

Imagine if flash get access to the speed force 💀

@SS4DEUCE it was pretty cool haha 😄
I understand why Superman had to win the 1-on-1 fight against Thor simply because he's the most popular heavyweight character in comics period. What I don't like is how Superman decked Thor and rendered him unconscious with one single blow. Thor has only been knocked out one other time from an old story I can remember reading by a virtually equal opponent and that was more of a sucker punch. Again, I and many fans understood why Superman had to win this1-on-1 fight against Thor.
No the fight wasn't chosen by favoritism or by the fans stop running off If that was right batman would easily deafet captain america who wasn't even superhuman in that time and was always weaker than even his live action versio😂
But they both had draw
The fans picked this outcome not the writers. They held a poll and what you see is the result of that.
My favorite part of this crossover was Pietro on the dc earth finally tapping into the speed force briefly.

THOR powers are mystical based which is SUPERMAN's greatest weakness and one hit by the ASGARDIAN's hammer would be worst than a Kryptonite bazooka.
@@dannytennial5311 what ghosts are you arguing with lol ??
When it comes to Marvel Vs DC characters, for me it will always comes down to Superman Vs The Hulk
