- I visit the source of the River Tamar in Cornwall and also tell the fable of Tamara.

Hi Paul, could it be that the border follows the boundary of the Tamar catchment? On the map you showed it appeared the boundary line going above and including a contributory of the river. Cheers from NZ

Yes, I think you may be onto something with it being connected with the catchment area of The Tamar.

That was a very enjoyable walk in some beautiful countryside. I particularly liked the wildlife reserve with its marvellous hide, and that idylic section of the Bude Canal, still in water but obviously no longer navigable. I guess this too must be a haven for wildlife. Thank you.

Yes, I have always been rather taken with the Bude Canal - it certainly is rather special and unique. That aqueduct section south of Lower Tamar Lake is looked after by the Bude Canal Trust (website is down at the moment, but they have clearly been active with clearance recently) but the section in Bude to Marhamchurch is looked after by different canal trust.
The reserve there is rather great - lots of wonderful wildlife.

Interesting presentation on our great River Tamar. As a Plymothian growing up near the Tamar and Tavy confluence, I have to correct you as to the source of the Tavy. It's on Dartmoor and not Bodmin Moor and it flows through Peter Tavy, Tavistock and meets the Tamar at Warleigh point. A train trip up the Tamar Valley to Bere Ferers is a great way to view the Tamar and Tavy valley s. Look forward to the next video. 😄

Yes, you are quite right - I am not sure why I said Bodmin Moor, and not Dartmoor, in the fable sequence about Tamara's story.
I know the area well, as I used to live in Tamerton Foliot - Warleigh Woods (Devon Wildlife Trust) was one of my favourite 'go to' places after work.
I made two videos in the Tamar Valley (around Calstock) itself earlier in the year.
Bere Ferrers is on my list to cover at some point for a video.

Very enjoyable walk Paul. My Grandson happened to be visiting and really enjoyed the story of Tamara. Great history on the Bude Canal. BTW, hope your Father is still on the mend. 👍

Glad your grandson enjoyed the story of Tamara too! When I was living in Cornwall, I wasn't aware of this - only came to light when I was doing the research for this. I lovely little fable and not that dis-similar to the story of Sabrina's sisters.

Great history and explore of the source. One of the lessons taught in Geography 7/8 was finding out some of the sources of the major river systems around the world. The kids were always amazing to learn that most just have their start as a little trickle. Really enjoyed this! Thanks!

I live half an hour's walk from the Cornwall section of the coast path. I've never heard of the Tamara Way but now it is tempting to try the whole circuit of Cornwall. Your videos are very enjoyable and informative. :)

Yes, although The Tamara Way got a lot of publicity on its launch, I don't think it has hit the collective walkers' psyche just yet. I am sure it will though!
Marsland Mouth is probably my favourite beach in Cornwall. Thankfully, there is no car park or public road anywhere near it!

I suppose that the research wasn't too bad, as I know the area very well, having lived in Cornwall previously.
I didn't know about the little museum by the wharf at Virworthy though! That was an unexpected bonus.
It is an amazing canal, and I am sure I will feature it again at some point.

Hi Paul, You know I thought I recognized the opening scenes and its turns out that we’ve been here before!! Great selection of music for both the intro and outro!!
Tamara, what a great story, I didn’t know that one!! I enjoyed seeing the plaques along the route. I was wandering if there was such an insect as a nymph and a quick search tells me that “Most of a dragonfly's life is spent in the larval stage ….. Dragonfly nymphs have six legs, wing sheaths, and an extendable hinged jaw. During this aquatic stage, nymphs breathe through gills that are located inside their rectums …. “. The dragonfly in Spanish is Libelula, which, once you’ve mastered how to pronounce it, is a lovely word!!
I was musing on the fertilization before the arrival of the canal and it occurred to me that with 4000 horses they must have had more than enough fertilizer!!!
Interesting about Cornwall being a nation, having your own language is one part of that, Wikipedia tells me that there were 563 Cornish speakers listed in the 2021 census.
Mums still in hospital but improving and they are starting to plan for the support she will need on leaving, good news!!

@@westcountrywanderings Cornish-Jamaican that is quite a mix .... did she put the jam on her scones first? My sister defiantely doesnt have a Cornish accent and her husband is from Bolton so my apologies for the dilution of the accent in the Wadebridge area!!
Actually, it is surprisingly common! It dates back to the 18th C, and pirating days. There is a Falmouth in Jamaica too - there are lots of similarities between the two countries. Maybe a future video topic?

Really Paul you have excelled yourself with this presentation. It should be seen by more people- be entered into some sort of competition just like Countryfile do that yearly photo competition for their Calendar. I’m sure something must exist somewhere.

( just to nitpick-sorry- the canal boat isn’t tied up it is being horse drawn I think & there is a person looking over the bridge - only visible because you included the close-up at the end)
