      Its really not, the video has made it look harder than it is. You can simply remove the free trial from your order to start with and just order the free plan.... not rocket science.

      eraldorh they no longer let you select the free plan to begin with, and now it costs $15 to downgrade.

    one thing you need to know when doing FreedomPop is that you can get LTE. I got a SIMs card from FreedomPop I popped it into my LTE GoPhone from AT&T the Alcatel ideal and it picks up the LTE coverage with no problem. So yes if you have a unlocked phone then you're probably going to get 3G speeds if you have a phone that can use LTE data you can use LTE data. When testing the LTE data speeds I get around 40 megabits per second down using my AT&T Go phone SIMs card through GoPhone it's the same 40 megabits per second down but that depends on what time of the day it is. So yes you do get LTE service on the Sims card your phone just has to support

    I have a CDMA FreedomPop phone on Sprint, and I must say that it is much better than what was shown here with the SIM. Firstly, I do get the full 500MBs (tho I did upgrade to a paid plan after a few months). Secondly, while coverage is worse, speeds are much better on Sprint. I've done a Speed test and have clocked about 54 Mbps down and about 10 Mbps up (using Sprints LTE Plus network I assume). Bottom line, if coverage isn't an issue for you, I'd recommend going for the Sprint version. I use and Android btw.

  • @cybotive8062
    @cybotive8062 8 років тому

    The 500MB isn't false advertising. You get it with the Sprint service. The Sprint option is way better, you connect directly to Sprint with LTE. With the GSM card, you connect to AT&T but then get routed all the way to Europe and then back to wherever you are. Neither are reliable for calls what so ever, though there is a premium voice for $3.99 (doesn't work on GSM but they'll let you sign up for it anyway). The premium voice on the Sprint network works, but only when the app guesses correctly (it decides whether to use data or the cell network based on speed).

    i also found that there customer service is not very good too. you have to pay to talk to a customer service rep in the us and if you dont you talk to patrick or mary in the Philippines being outsourced which talk to you via piece of paper they are reading very poor too

    They do give you 500mb on their sprint based phones. Not on the Global SIM kit. The bonus with the SIM is you can use it in other countries listed on the SIM kit cover.

    I have been using FreedomPop for over 3 years or so by now. It's a bit finicky to deal with but if you are tech savvy then you'll have no problem at all. my current plan is the 15 USD unlimited everything plan which is text, voice and 1 GB of 4G data then throttle to 3G, though in my experience I haven't gone to 3G ever. I do admit the messaging app is all f^cking horrible at times but between Hangout, WhatsApp and facebook messaging I do not have a problem. I do constantly stream Slacker Radio and SoundCloud at times and I have not experienced the skipping audio. Sure sometimes it buffers between each new track for like 2 or 3 seconds then it plays.
    I know it is not Unlimited voice or text if you sign up for the 1 GB per month data which is billed annually at 80 USD You do use data to send those text or to talk. I haven't tested to freedompop-to-freedompop text/voice claiming to be unlimited and not counts against your usage.
    But if you are on a really tight budget and you know what you're getting yourself into then I do recommend it for the price mainly if you are usually connected to Wifi within your area, like at school, work, home, train station etc it works for me (NYC) and don't really worry about my phone bill in general.

    So just to get things strait the 500mb of free data are for the phones are on the Sprint network or the phones that t uhh purchase from Freedompop or the BYOD program of Freedompop.
    While on the gsm global SIM, which runs on AT&T and T-Mobile networks . Only provide with 200MG, which it does say when you check out with the SIM card

    gran video showing how Freedompop works. I have to say that for people who travels abroad is a great alternative to roaming charges. For example, I'm from Argentina and when travelling to the US I can buy this SIM to use whatsapp mainly and if I travel to Europe, I can use data for free too. The service as a primary phone service isn't quite good.

    Well I tried FreedomPOP and they stated free service but then started adding fees that I was not expecting and not really explain up front. The main thing is always, when its free there is a catch. At least they gave me back the $15 credit during the trial period, but not protection fee that I did not use.

    You did something wrong when you signed up.. I signed up and declined all offers and have the basic plan was only charged ¢.01 the person who i got the sim card from (only $5.00) gave me a list of friends to add and now I have 900mb of data per month. the friends part is a pyramid scheme but doesn't cost you anything. They gave me 200MB for some anniversary. The only problem I have with them is that I can't upgrade to the premium plus so my data rolls over even the CSR couldn't.. that's the only problem I've had with them

    I just bought a FreedomPop SIM, though I did it through Amazon instead of giving them my credit card online. I already have an unlimited T-Mobile SIM card, so I figured that this would make a good backup SIM for use in my old smartphone. Hopefully I can also set it up with PayPal, and completely avoid any charges.

    Freedompop has been running a promo where you can log in and order your global GSM SIM for the amazing price of 1 cent instead of 99 cents or $9.99 . You have to put in your credit card information and as the video says, you get signed up for the $19.99 1 gigabyte plan. I somehow got signed up for 2 SIMS. I'm pleased as I got charged 2 cents and got to put service on two of my devices. I'm just in the first month so I have yet to see how downgrading to the free service tiers will work, if it doesn't I'm hustled out of two monthly subscription fees. I'm optimistic, I will attempt my downgrade on Feb 1 or after I exhaust my gigabyte on the respective sims, whichever comes first.

      They definitely get money out of you. You have to disable that auto top up and they charge $5 for that. I've paid it already on my accounts. They put a small warning that they would charge that $5 each time I disabled auto top off. The big test is early February.

    • @penphenrin14616
      @penphenrin14616 7 років тому

      what do you mean auto top off?? they charged 5$ for downgrading? I'm just asking cuz i bought the 1cent sim card I was planning to use for my 8yr old for emergency use only so I was going to downgrade to free sevices.... what is auto top off is that a monthly thing?

    • @normanhmath
      @normanhmath 7 років тому +2

      I'm pretty sure the $5 charge for removal of auto top off is only a one time charge. You don't have to remove it BUT you probably will want to, especially since you are putting this phone in the hands of a youngster. Auto Top Off is enabled by default . If you log on to the freedompop web page and you click on BILLING , YOU WILL see billing settings and you can see payment information then shipping address followed by Automatic Top Off . By default it will say ENABLED Yes. You can click Edit to change it to NO. If you do, you are charged $5. They say this is to avoid people using data and not paying. However if you leave it enabled, I've read that they don't even wait until you have hit your data cap to charge you an auto top off. They charge it as soon as you are only 100 mb BELOW your data cap. That cap is 200 mb according to the video so you get popped at 100 mb. Moreover, it is difficult to stay under that cap because the VOICE AND TEXT ON FREEDOM POP is VOICE OVER IP, not Cellular voice thus your mobile data is active if you want the phone to even be able to ring or call out, and you are not on WI FI. With data turned on your phone can easily get to 100 GB {note they charge the auto top off here even though your limit is 200 mb. Android apps often auto update and will do so on mobile data unless you can find a setting to update on WI FI only. VOIP calls also use data at about 1 MB per minute. Freedompop is supposed to credit back data used for voice and text but I'm concerned mistakes can be made. SMS Text uses trivial data. If you use any apps they will use data. If you dare to use You Tube, you can use 400 MB in 20 minutes of video viewing. If auto top off is turned on, you will get auto topped off {random charges} and it could happen at a great rate. Turn it off and at least , you just get your account suspended when you go over unless you log on and pay for some extra data or upgrade your plan, and that gives you more control than you have with auto top off.

    AT 6:38, Whatsapp is mentioned to be an alternative to the awkward freedompop messaging app. However, I would just like to point out that whatsapp doesn't recognize the number you get with freedompop because its not the number assigned to the sim card. (From personal experience.) So technically, you can't really use WhatsApp with freedompop.......

    I'm finding that there are country related issues for some services, so far Pandora and Google Hangouts. If you listen to Pandora music and you load it from WI FI it will run. After you switch to mobile data {by walking out of the range of your WI FI or turning it off} you get a notification "Sorry Pandora is not available in your country ". I was thinking WTH{or F} I'm in Ohio, USA and Pandora always works. However, one will note that when setting up the SIM and adding the freedompop. foggmobile.com APN, which is required for you to have data service {along with enabled roaming} you see the SIM has APN's for 3 internet and 3 MMS named three.co.uk . That's the United Kingdom. Freedompop is an MVNO for them. Then UK provider Three allows roaming at zero cost on the AT&T network in 3G mode only here in the United States So Pandora thinks you are in the UK. I found a similar country issue with Google Hangouts when dialing a phone number using Google Voice. It automatically puts a +44 in front of ANY NUMBER you attempt to dial and that is a UK country code. Call does not get completed. However, incoming calls come in perfectly fine. You have to dial out using the freedom pop voice number you have been provided, which is tricky if you have friends who screen their calls using caller ID until you are able to inform them that your new freedompop number is a call from you.

    Question... Since you make calls with the FPapp, does this require you to be where there is wifi or does it use the Sprint/Att network for calls. I am legally blind and just need a emergency phone for power ottages but if the calling part runs on wifi, then I can't use this

    Now that they have WhatsApp unlimited for some sims it looks like another great excuse to avoid using their terrible messaging app. Between this and Truphone I'm mostly satisfied with what I want a smartphone to do in between Wifi hotspots.

  • @DOSBoxMom
    @DOSBoxMom 8 років тому

    I just downgraded my FreedomPop account to remove the Premium Plus extras (because I couldn't get hotspot tethering to work on my Moto E). I will probably eventually port my FreedomPop number (from the Sprint side) to an AT&T MVNO such as PureTalk USA or Red Pocket. (Data works great on my Moto E, but I have yet to successfully make an outgoing phone call with that device via FreedomPop.)
    I appreciated your coverage of FreedomPop's new GSM service -- but I think the GSM service uses T-Mobile's towers, not AT&T. If native T-Mobile coverage is weaker in your area than AT&T, that might explain some of the issues you were having. Since I don't plan to get into Google Voice/Google Hangouts, should I switch to a GSM-unlocked device, I will probably bite the bullet & find a good prepaid phone plan. (I still have an LG Volt on RingPlus, so I wouldn't be phoneless during a port-out from FreedomPop.)

    • @joelharbin7878
      @joelharbin7878 8 років тому

      So, why would it use T-Mobile Coverage if it says AT&T in the status bar at the top? I don't see how that would work.

    • @DOSBoxMom
      @DOSBoxMom 8 років тому

      I thought I read online somewhere (maybe the FreedomPop site?) that FreedomPop GSM used T-Mobile's towers. If it does use AT&T towers, though, then we can just go back to blaming FreedomPop's VOIP-preferred method of handling phone calls for the lousy call quality. I ended up just getting a new phone number on the prepaid GSM carrier I picked instead of porting out from FreedomPop, but I've pretty much given up on using FreedomPop. (Which kind of stinks, because the Moto E 2015 I was using on FreedomPop's CDMA side was a nice phone, and the data worked fine -- but I never could make phone calls with it.)

    • @DOSBoxMom
      @DOSBoxMom 8 років тому

      That's good to hear. Living in a small town away from major urban areas, I have to carefully check coverage maps for any carrier I'm considering (and check my kid's college addresses against those coverage maps, too). I wonder if FreedomPop's GSM coverage would work better in my area than their CDMA coverage?

    freedom pop is basically prepaid wireless. they won't tell you that until it's already to late. BUYER BE AWARE it's only free if you give them $15 JUST in case you go over. that's not free to me if you pay for it in advance.

    • @StetsonDoggett

      For a brief second at 2:01 in the video it says additional data costs $0.03 per MB. :) So 3 cents per MB if you go over.

    kinda a bummer that you need the app to call and text. I was going to suggest this to my grandma who doesnt need internet and only calls and texts every now and then, but she doesnt have a smartphone :(
    unless they have a J2ME version which i doubt.

      FreedomPop can work well with Google Voice and Hangouts for talk and text too. FreedomPop provides the data, while Google Voice and Hangouts provides a better app experience.

      This is a dingus comment. Let everyone enjoy whichever operating system they prefer! It should be up to FreedomPop to provide an optimal experience on both operating systems.

    • @helgenx
      @helgenx 8 років тому

      You do you know app compatibility is totally different on each OS, right? Android has probably more compatibility issues only because of hardware limitations because of all the different devices, but almost any software that's cross platform doesn't work well on iOS usually.

    I have Freedompop for 1 year on the Sprint network
    and do have problems
    the messaging app you need to work with freedompop service is buggy
    and calls are poor quality sometimes
    and need data to make calls unless you upgrade to "Premium Voice" $4 which doesn't need data to make calls
    no 4G speeds even if it does say "4G" you are not getting fast speeds whatsoever
    now for the new ATT version of Freedompop the call quality is good but the messaging app is still buggy
    only had ATT for a month so far ok but the plans are much higher if you decide to be a paying customer
    and last thing calling support is virtually non-exist I'm a paying customer and still I get message that the live support is for paying customers only
    email is joke if they don't back to you in 1 week
    I get a message saying if one week passes they assume the problem was solved
    leaving me with no support whatoever
