I love this book too. I’m so impressed by how he was such a good person even though he went through a lot

I loved this book, too. Like you, I found some plot points to be convenient, but sometimes it's good to have a book that allows you to think about the deeper questions while the plot continues on.

Most of us grow up with some characteristic that sets us apart from others and are persecuted... whether we’re a wizard, or differently abled...

I absolutely loved this book. It grabbed me from the first page. I had to keep rereading it after I finished as I couldn’t let it go. (And I never reread books). So good

I read this book about a month ago and like it. I wanted to adopt Samuel and protect him. Growing up in the Catholic Church so many things were very familiar to me. I thought it was a 'cozy' book. I'm with you about not liking scary or graphic books. I was intrigued by the description of the story on Amazon, which is what drew me to reading it. SPOILER: The only thing that I felt was somewhat of a letdown was that I feel his life wasn't really "extraordinary" but rather ordinary, side from his embolism. I guess I expected "extraordinary". All in all, I like the book and loved Sam. There are David Bateman's all over the place to varying degrees. Those people that hurt people are always the ones that have been hurt first.

You are so right about the David Batemans in the world. It's hard to remember that, though, when we come across them. I felt like some of his plot line was a little bit convenient.
I'm glad you liked the book. It's definitely one that I really enjoyed reading. I would agree that it's a cozy book. I've been looking for another one like this one lately but haven't found any!

Great video! I just finished this book a couple minutes ago and absolutely loved it! This is the first real book I've read as an adult and now I'm afraid it's all downhill from here. What is a good next book to pick up? All I know right now is that I like first-person fiction. If you could give me a recommendation I would appreciate it so much!

The ones I've loved the most that gave me similar feelings were: Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmy Long and Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. I think Beasts would be the most similar in that it has a very unique main character that you just love so much.
One I always recommend to people just because I love the message and story so much is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It's technically young adult but most adults (that I know that have read it) really love it.
I hope that helps you! It's hard to find good reads sometimes, especially if you loved a book a lot. It can be hard for the next one to live up to. Let me know if you read any of these (even if you hate them, lol).

I think the word you were looking for is bildungsroman :) Great book. Enjoyed the childhood parts the most
