The song is called 'Sakhi' by 'Remember Shakti' as the title says. It was performed only in this live concert and has never been officially recorded. I doubt you'll find it anywhere in audio format! That's the case for many amazing Indian Classical renditions.
I saw this tour here in Vancouver. Incredible show. Shrinivas really stole the show. He was shy at first but midway he just shredded that mandolin. McLaughlin was mindblowing as always.
All commenting should kepp in mind john can play in any genra, and particularily is of the most open minded of musicians, he is open to any sound, he rarely does not acsept what you would consider cheap or cheesy because he is in love with the beauty, the esence of the world.
The original Shakti was 30 years ago, again, 30 years. Why should they have to keep the same acoustic guitar/violin format. If music doesn't move on and progress it becomes a museum piece. Love the past shakti and love the new.
Amazing. Were any of you at the Manchester Shakti gig about 3 years ago. It was electric. The most amazing thing ever. They played really loud. Tabla beating off chest. Everything they do is breathtaking
Hi Bazonics. You said : ``The Wish`` off the album is the greatest thing JM has ever played. Well, i really agree with you ! The Wish is speechless. I have the cd in France but i took it here in Canada because i remembered this piece makes me thrilled each time i listen to it ! McLaughlin is simply the greatest living guitarist. Shawn Lane was also a serious competitor but he died...He played things never heard before. And it is no accident Shawn was focusing on indian music just before he died.
Not Manchester but I did see them at The royal festival hall - London - on that tour. I agree, it was an amazing evening. What was it John said that night? "people are important, not places" :)
Sakhi has never been recorded for CD, in fact no RS studio recordings at all with Shankar MahaDevan, only the live 'Saturday night in Bombay'. I live in hope.
There is music with a flow in time, existence isn't left as an affair in a moment for that at the same time , So,you'll engrave the moment on your memory eternally ,thank you for also bringing a crowd to the far place from a pother, BAFUTTO ATTII HAE ,DANNYABAADO,....John McLaughlin......
Bazonics. Its beautiful! I feel goose bumps every single time i listen to Shrinivas on the mandolin or the bit with Zakir Hussain and Selvaganesh right at the end!
Almost everyone in this group seems to have a "check this shit out" or "how do you lik them apples" look before or after they have jammed - look for it.... damn each of these guys is a legend .... hope they get together once more for a tour ....
Shakti, 'Reformed' as Remember Shakti, for a series of concerts celebrating the 50th anniversary of India's independence. L.Shankar was asked but refused and was replaced by Hariprasad Chaurasia. IMO 'the wish'off the album is the greatest thing JM has ever played. That was 9 years ago, HC was replaced by U.Shrinivas and then Shankar joined. Point is: it's a fluid progression over time not "lets modernise it"
hey anand, could u please send it to me as well? im a great fan of these guys and their concert (last december at bangalore) reminds me of a very special moment in my life.
I play guitar/mandolin myself. Having Synth into mix allows one to alter what is called ADSR envelope of guitar and helps play the instrument faster. (One can read about it on the net - there is enough info out there.) That's why I do not like JM using it as he should not have to rely on synths to play fast. Shrinivas on the other hand is quite consistant and plays in sonic speed without any synth gimmicks.
Loved till 2:50. That sublime intro felt totally incongruous to what came later. I love John McLaughlin's music and have followed him from his Mahavishnu Orchestra days, but this just didn't blend in.
Hello, Was this video taken from the shakti concert in Paris this year? On the french Mezzo tv? I was at the concert and it was wonderful, i love indian music like that. If you have the entire concert i'd like you to send it me can you please contact me, if you want. Bye and thanx a lot
This is so beautiful! Very good Intro...I know that JM is a guitarist from the god, but sometimes he uses his fusion in wrong places, i mean that this tune shoudnt be so rock after slow intro, but its my opinion! Thanks!
@sillysahil haha! first time i've heard anyone refer to the great McLaughlin as 'that white guy'. I'm a big fan of Indian classical music, and am yet to see another non-Indian as well versed with the Indian style as him.
Anyway, Shakti never did 'traditional Indian raga'. They were always a fusion band, mixing north indian with south, jazz and blues. But of course you could rarely see the joins.
The guitar is a most beautiful sounding instrument. When the tone is bad, there is nothing that you can play that sounds good. No guitar player is bigger than the guitar itself, including jm. Some people get confused and think it is them we love and not the guitar.
@rhitamd First, I never said that Shankar was the only best singer in India. I am very well aware that there are a lot of other good singers in India. Secondly, Whether Shankar is lesser/greater than other band members in Shakti is a non-issue to me because each member has his own unique instrument/style to bring to the table, and Shankar effectively brings out the vocals. Thirdly, shankar has a wide repertoire in vocals (ghazals, bhaav geet, classical, fusion, rap, etc). So no one like him!
There's something about the acoustic string that evokes the human voice and soul - the qwawali vocals make up for it - but I agree with Anderson2000 - John bends and phrases nylon acoustics amazingly and is much more subdued without them - and the violin is obsessively present in Indian music - he's missed that specific cultural evocation - but this is stunningly beautiful nevertheless - shame about the strings...
uh...they're basically doing traditional indian raga...that's their thing. If they wanted to "modernize" it, *gag* then they should have called it the New Shakti...or Electric Shakti...and not "Remember Shakti," because they certainly weren't the Shakti I remember. I don't want to see a Genesis reunion with them scratching records on turntables either. And besides, the violins were COMPLETELY missing. If they couldn't get Shankar, they should have gotten somebody.
Regarding guitar tone - sometime in the 90's he started using some effect with his johnny smith that sounded sour. What I could figure is that he was trying to sound like Miles' trumpet. Sometimes highly acclaimed artists'egos grow and lead to them losing taste. Taste is everything for an artist. He seems to have lost alot of it in recent years. Such a horrid guitar tone (W/ the defrancesco group)is a perfect example.
@kalpeshbhumia - may be he is a very good classically trained singer.. bt among the other legends in the band.. he is nothing...there are other legendary singers in from india.. better than shankar mahadevan......
I get tears starting from 1:50... throughout the mandolin sequence.... everytime I listen to this video.
The song is called 'Sakhi' by 'Remember Shakti' as the title says.
It was performed only in this live concert and has never been officially recorded. I doubt you'll find it anywhere in audio format! That's the case for many amazing Indian Classical renditions.
Viraj Joshi alas it has been recorded, it’s on John, Shankar and Zakir’s is that so? release
John McLaughlin is an English guy with an Indian soul. I respect this guy. And he has a phenomenal band to back him up.
I saw this tour here in Vancouver. Incredible show. Shrinivas really stole the show. He was shy at first but midway he just shredded that mandolin. McLaughlin was mindblowing as always.
i was thr !!live!!...and I met them backstage!!....one of the better days of my life.
John´s face at 2:30,thats what i want to see. That face is more than even music can ever be.
Shalom to all here :)
John and Zakir,How much we wish Shankar was there too!!!
-RIP U.Srinivas. (mandolin player. The best always go early 1969-2014
All commenting should kepp in mind john can play in any genra, and particularily is of the most open minded of musicians, he is open to any sound, he rarely does not acsept what you would consider cheap or cheesy because he is in love with the beauty, the esence of the world.
Whew! and you thought the mandolin was just an Italian instrument....Mahadev Shankar's voice sends me to heaven...
The original Shakti was 30 years ago, again, 30 years. Why should they have to keep the same acoustic guitar/violin format. If music doesn't move on and progress it becomes a museum piece. Love the past shakti and love the new.
Mandolin Shrinivas is simply wonderful!!!
Amazing. Were any of you at the Manchester Shakti gig about 3 years ago. It was electric. The most amazing thing ever. They played really loud. Tabla beating off chest. Everything they do is breathtaking
I came here to watch John McLaughlin, but was completely wowed by the other musicians... Amazing.
I'm with you re Shawn Lane. Sure he could shred, but so much more. Such heart and soul in his playing, 'Savitri' off of G.P.I.T.O.T is just beautiful.
U.Srinivas is great here!!
these people are more then people!!

Exquisite! I too shall buy the dvd as soon as I can afford it. Thanks for this wonderful video!

Sakhi has never been recorded for CD, in fact no RS studio recordings at all with Shankar MahaDevan, only the live 'Saturday night in Bombay'. I live in hope.
There is a DVD out that has this song, but from a different concert. The DVD also contains a nice interview with John.
There is music with a flow in time, existence isn't left as an affair in a moment for that at the same time ,
So,you'll engrave the moment on your memory eternally ,thank you for also bringing a crowd to the far place from a pother,

Can't express how brilliant this is. Absolutely amazing. Wish I could see this live.
it's funny, I've come back to listen to this piece over and over...and every time I see your comment, I crack up.
for me is more than music!i looooooove!
They are my Gods!!!
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC !!!!!!

more than amazing! i got chills.
Almost everyone in this group seems to have a "check this shit out" or "how do you lik them apples" look before or after they have jammed - look for it.... damn each of these guys is a legend .... hope they get together once more for a tour ....
That's damn good, man, I guess there are many Indian classical scales played, awesome, man -- Keep Ruling, Shankar.
and out standing ^^
argh you missed the beginning! But thanks for posting. Beautiful journey!
What a shame. It is such a beautiful piece. Thanks for responding.
can your father let me meet jon becausei made my own music and i think that he s going to love it because he was the source of my inspiration

tranquil!!
i seem to not enjoy the guitar sound myself...but i guess musicians seem to evolve in their choice of sound...
Wow...
I love it...from 5:01 to 5:07 John's face says "check this shit out"...gotta love those chords!
Loved till 2:50.
That sublime intro felt totally incongruous to what came later. I love John McLaughlin's music and have followed him from his Mahavishnu Orchestra days, but this just didn't blend in.

i have the whole concert. You can find it on Edonkey or Emule. If not, just get in touch with me n i'll try sending it across to you.
Thank you and what a wonderful piece.
Is there a DVD pack or collection of these ?
There are times when I'd be inclined to agree with you, but in this case I think it works beautifully as it is.
@sillysahil haha! first time i've heard anyone refer to the great McLaughlin as 'that white guy'. I'm a big fan of Indian classical music, and am yet to see another non-Indian as well versed with the Indian style as him.
This is from the Remember Shakti DVD. Buy it, you won't regret it!! :)
hey, could you send the concert m8
-Ben
..very devotional ..I
Anyway, Shakti never did 'traditional Indian raga'. They were always a fusion band, mixing north indian with south, jazz and blues. But of course you could rarely see the joins.
this music can not be written and can not be copied.
@nitinvirat7... Yes, one is goirick and the other is guruji1
Johns face reminds me of Stanley Lorrell.
dude, I couldnt find it on both the links...can you please help me download this..

What concert is this? I'd love to get a CD

Ive seen JM play without a synth sound and believe you me HE IS FAST!!!!!
yes mr silly -sahil even the 'white guy' is great. That's very generous of you.
Serious..which song are they using?
There is bollywood music, and then there is this.

thanks for the comment. No 'fraid not.
shrinivas rules
this is what you hear when you arrive in heaven....
Indeed. I felt robbed when I saw them. No acoustic instruments and no violin.
to play this good you gotta be on LSD or you gotta be really crazy!
@bazonics LOL bazonics!!

very nice indeed but i feel padmasree hariharan wud hv done a ay better job at the vocals though
i did not like JM's synth sound. does not suit his stature.
@kalpeshbhumia - may be he is a very good classically trained singer.. bt among the other legends in the band.. he is nothing...there are other legendary singers in from india.. better than shankar mahadevan......
Then why not just go pluck the strings with a nail and get off on it by yourself. The rest of us here will listen to JM.
