One time we went to the Proms for the Rite and met at least half a dozen bands I knew waiting and there were a LOT of \m/ shirts. And quite a bit of headbanging during the gnarly bits. (Yes, that's the Proms at the Albert Hall in London, it's cheap classical music for 2 and a half months, they have this 'day ticket' thing that you can't buy in advance that gets you into the Arena or Circle.. both areas are standing (or sitting down if you bring a cushion) and NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT THIS last I looked it was £8 ffs )
Such a big fan of Stravinsky. And I really love what you did here, Ben. Really goes to show the power of tension and release. Doesn’t matter how ugly or dissonant a chord may sound when it can always be resolved into a number of pleasing ways. Love the lesson!
Great video! I loved the RPG graphics at 02:07 because you can definitely hear a lot of Petrushka type chords in Uematsu's work. I don't know if it's technically the same chord but reminded me immediately of the start of "Into the Darkness"/Mist Cave Theme in FF4
Dang, Ben. Just when I thought I knew it all about music, you humble me again. Thanks, the two chords are dissident and beautiful and I love how they resolve.
Stacking 2 major chords a tritone apart is one of my favorite sounds ever. Over C7 you can alternate between a C triad and F# triad, it sounds wicked. Also, you can find those two chords (C and F#) in a C Diminished half-whole scale! So you can play this scale over the first Stravinsky chord!
Found your channel through the composer challenge: Gotta say your composition was among my favorites, but more than anything, what caught me about you is the way you described things. Previous partners of mine would always tell me that they couldn't stop listening to me talk about music and I never understood why. Listening to how you love music.. I've never met anyone who talks about it in the same way, where there's a story that forms in your mind and you're so happy to share what colors and visions and feelings come to your mind. The way you even got to the barest point of your emotions when describing what you saw and what you felt. It was awesome. I had yet to meet anyone who loved music in that way, but I'm excited to watch your videos and see what more you have to say. Hope you're doing well and I wish you much love from Germany
0:30 very Mr. Bungle... esp stuff composed by Trevor Dunn (source, ears and he's said in interviews that he loves to use chords like this :) ) great/fun and edu-craytional vid as always!
What a fun coincidence! I'm playing Petrouchka in my national youth orchestra in a few weeks. It's awesome stuff and really tricky! Thanks for the vid, Ben!
If you curious what exactly Petrushka means here is 2 meanings: 1. The name of glove puppet from Russian folklore. 2. The Polish name of parsley, which is borrowed from Latin (PETROselinum) and now is used by Russians.
Frank Zappa didnthe most to popularize Strabinsky in rock or pop contexts. He quoted Petroushka and other Stravinsky bits at various points in his career.
Rite of Spring is metal af
theres a punk band named rites of spring and theyre amazing and classic (members later went to play in fugazi too)
The Firebird Suite too.
So much. It's pure riffs and devil's notes

I like to believe The Dillinger Escape Plan would have never existed without it
I love nontraditional harmony being used in pop. Nice tutorial
I love it when Ben slyly reminds us that he is a shred maniac while talking about pop music
I'm going to assume that I misinterpreted this, but just in case I didn't, did you just call Stravinsky "pop" ? :3
@@MegaBubble Not at all, I called Ben pop (This is a compliment)
The pop song givin "the smile" vibes

love how you combine your music with your 3d animations, one of the most unique creators out there :)
I second this!!
absolutely mental track there at the end, creepy & foreboding with a sort of leering sensuality , giving some very of montreal freewave vibes

THAT EDNING SONG GOEES SOOOOOOOOOOOO HARD HOLY HELL THAT MELODY IS SO GOOD I LOVE YOU BEN LEVIN

Also most of 'Nothingface' by Voivod is based on the Rite. They did it first, kidz. In 1989. Still sounds brilliant.
If you know you know
Will you ever release that song? It's so damn good. "Who-ooo's the director of our dream" is such a good line and melody.

it's great for a 7alt sound

Wow Ben! I have not taken your content in for a while, and you've gotten so good at videos! Super impressed and I really enjoyed the music!

Awesome! Thanks for the inspiration!
Ben that was SIIIIICK!!!
That background song at 2:30 to like 2:50 is filthy. Great work!!

That "wrong note" was sooo good though.
So soothing to my ears 😌
Dude you are just badass
this reminds me so much of Dillinger Escape Plan
Mike Patton = GOD
Thats was a good ep i prefer the original guy from greg, but patton should do a full LP@Typical.Anomaly
Yes good shout
You absolutely must finish the full version of "A guy with coffee" song. It's charming!
Great video, love the effort
Enjoyed this video, Ben. More of this, please. 😏

The Man, The Genius
Ben Levin

Thank you for this! Such Opethy chords.
I own that score. You have taste.
This is great

"Light headed at the knees"
so muchhhhhhhhhh fun!!!
A make a Petrushka blast daily after my morning coffee
@1:20 isnt that the "National Emergency Alarm" sound? lol
I like to do a polytonal chromatic mediant thing: Gm over Eb
Pop song sounded a lot like Bowie's late works! Black Star!
Yes it does in a good way
Try the 12 tone chord in Mahler's 10th symphony last adagio.
Tricky on guitar though.. maybe a 12 string :)
Damn. Nice chords
Thanks for always bringing the weird, you avant garde afficionado
*GENIUS*
deep lyrics man...
This is really helpful to someone like me with a small brain
0:56 Add some metal guitars and you have something cooking here, I can't stop replaying this part
"Hi I am Stravinsky"
"No you're Not"
"Oh..."
Knowing that Petruska, translates to parsley makes video more hilarious
Dude... your a boss!!! Your the person people watch when they graduate from Marty Schwartz lol
- Hi I am Stravinsky
- No You're Not
- Oh...
0:30 why does this sound like king crimon's 'Red'
You're the best
This was an awesome video!!!! 😈 I would definitely consider emulating Super Stravinsky RPG on my computer.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum intentionally uses heavy Stravinsky riffs and it sounds amazing!
So many sharps 😭
0:00-0:48 *King Crimson songwriting 101 be like**
Yep. This shit is prog
That was great wtf
3:48
Early 1900s classical is the best.
PETRUSHKA BLAST
Sounds like something you would hear in a king crimson song those start jams.
were the opening lyrics of your Stravinsky ballad about David Lynch? I feel so directly targeted by this whole video 💜
Genius
This is just my usually programmed comment to let Ben know and anyone else who enjoys this stuff that I appreciate y’all weirdos ❤️
King Crimschord
Kinda King Crimson-ish riffage
Igor be breaking all the rules, son!
But what about babushka chords?!
Kate Bush already used those
Babushka by lyube what a song
1:00 goes hard
Mathcore coded 👌🤘
DO SHOSTACHOVICH NEXT
PETRUSHKA BLAST!!! 😘 oh....now that I thing about it...it's the scary Back to the future chord
Frank Zappa didnthe most to popularize Strabinsky in rock or pop contexts. He quoted Petroushka and other Stravinsky bits at various points in his career.
Just sayin’ that the Petrushka chord, according to music theory is a pro-level chord.
welcome to djent metal
Петрушка(petruschka) is parsley in Russian, that’s why it’s slayin
0:31 alice in chains has entered the chat
Mommmmmmmm….im scared
whoa epic
Stravinsky is mathcore. (Bartok too.)
Voivod was using it in metal back in 1990

Stravinki???
did the video really have to start so loud, geez
C C# E F# G A# C = CF# + C# G + EA# + F# C Scale of stacked tritones.
nice shirt... but Who's Justin Cow???
😭 is me!!
@@JusticeCow nice to meet you Justin, but you spelt ur name wrong hahaha
Restraint is the key! Therefore Levin is not equal to Strav!
You need to actually make that into a song 🎉 maybe with different lyrics tho 😅
im rebddu
Oh yeah, good time to promote russian culture, bravo
Very unfortunate that Stravinsky was not FAR more prolific -
