The thing I like more about the Model 12 design is having the XLR inputs on the back, reducing the strain on the cables and giving it a slicker look. I might be the only one lol
I agree. But the (newer) Model 12 is significantly different from the 16 and 24 in numerous ways besides the cosmetic. In particular the 12 is almost entirely digital, and the 16 and 24 are almost entirely analog. The 12 can act as a basic DAW controller. The 16 and 24 don't have this. Some of these differences can be deal breakers for some users and should be well known before buying.
I agree. They can get in the way of your monitor as well. Just get a snake. I bought the model 24 because it’s awesome but I feel like I’m just going to mix down with it. I don’t know. Maybe take it places to record people without the nuisance of a computer. I don’t know where to put the thing.
I like having them on the back as well because it's less strain on the cables. Just not crazy about the XLR outputs because my monitors don't have XLR inputs so I had to buy adapters & wait for those to arrive before I could even use my monitors. I just wish I could figure out how to bounce tracks. I've watched several videos on it & it's just not working like they show in the videos.
Thanks for this video! I've read so many comments about the inability to bounce tracks on the Tascam Model units. Guess those folks just didn't take the time or effort to figure it out.
@@yolhanson say you have 4 mics on your drums, tracks 2,3,4,5.. you record your drum track, you the eq and get everything sounding how you want... you then push the sub button for tracks 2,3,4,5...you bring the sub fader up to 0...you then use two patch cables in the sub outs, and simply patch those into a stereo channel, say 17/18 for example..you would then record those 4 recorded tracks onto the channels with the patch cables, this will free up more channels, and all compression/pan/eq will also be applied
Thank you very much for Tascam Model 16 tutorial. It’s always good to lear things and also to be inspired by other musicians. I also make videos about using Tascam in my bedroom studio. All the best to you, happy to follow.

On any of the models, could you bounce 1,2 & 3 onto track 4? If so (a) would fx, pan and eq print over, and (b) to do this, would you play back 1,2&3 with REC pressed on 4 ? (Sorry if I missed this in the vid or the other comments).
Yes, but track 4 would be mono. It will print all eq etc. if you import and record the master buss. You would not want to have REC pressed down on 4. Good luck!
Yes! You absolutely can do that. I don’t know if the panning ends up being correct, though. I remember doing it that way and being slightly dissatisfied with the results, but I don’t remember why.
@@patrickwood77 Have you tried track swap? Not sure if it exists in Model 24. Record your mix as Main on tracks 23/24, then swap 23/24 to 21/22 etc. No export/import.
My model 24 came yesterday....I've all ready got a song down on it....lovely sounding board.... i have been using the tascam dp 24 for some years...and I'm all ready missing it in some ways... was wondering weather you have done this before...or if there is a way of linking the 2 boards...and making the best of both...just an idea on maybe there can be some interesting possibilities...and I'd like to know any ideas you have.thank u
Hey! Thanks for reaching out. The only way I think you could combine the two recorders would be using MTC within them. Have one set to “slave”and the other to “master”. Not sure that would work but it probably would?!
so, what you are doing is old school ''fly out and fly in'' via a 2 track reel to reel in essence with export/import i guess you can import that 2 track export to any 2 tracks like 1 and 2 or 13/14?
That’s pretty much the idea! Unfortunately the mono tracks don’t seem to have the option to take the stereo imports and spread them across 2 tracks. You can, however choose to bounce in mono and then import that to a mono track.
hi would you able to help me with mine model 12 tascam. i uses it mainly for karaoke 🎤. the mic doesn’t sound loud enogh even with mic preamp or turning up the gain level. is there some recommendations that you could suggest thanks in advance
Question! Doing a stereo mixdown of the individual tracks and moving it back to a stereo track leaves the other tracks to be free for recording. That is like restarting a new project with a back up track that you monitor to add extra tracks. But what if i only want only a few specific tracks bounced on a stereo tracks , but not the others? If i have guitars and vocals on tracks 1,2,3 and drums on 4,5,6,7,8 and want to bounce only the drums onto the stereo track 9/10. Will bouncing the mixed drums to the master and back to 9/10 remain in sync with tracks 1,2,3 (guitars&vocals)?
You can duplicate but since it will be the exact same track it won’t sound stereo even when both tracks are hard panned Left and Right. I guess you could add a delay or chorus to one track to have it widen the stereo image but it still may sound just like bigger mono.
Didn't work for me. It says "No Track." Any ideas? Edit...I think it worked, to hear it back you have to select SD Play in the menu to hear the converted stereo file on the track you imported to.
Thanks for a straight-to-the-point-video! Could you, if needed, also premix have something recorded on 13/14 as the mix goes to 15/16? And then import the mix to 13/14 (over writing the old)?
does the stereo mix that you made first have the loud kick in it too? I recorded 4 different tracks and when I went to create the stereo mix, with all my EQ's and faders, and pan knobs and effects the way it sounded good, the song it created sounded totally wrong. All the levels were off and it doesn't matter how you have the faders.
@@st.clairmusic7041 omfg how can it not tell you how to do this in the manual. I get it now and it works I've been using it again all day. Finally. I was so pissed cuz I thought it couldn't actually be used to master a final mix without hooking to a computer. Goddamn I can't tell you how frustrated I've been for like a month. Thank you for this video and sending me down the path of learning how to do like the prime fuckin feature. There is literally 1 vague paragraph about stereo mix export in the manual and zero about mastering and creating a real final mix with all the levels, pan, and effects set after listening back. Mind boggling.
I'm following completely, so beyond this, if I want to then send 13/14 to a daw, would I be able to separate the original tracks back out for further manipution in my daw or would all the tracks I bounced be represented as one track in the daw?
If you send 13/14 in to your DAW as a stereo track, you would not be able to separate them beyond what is panned left and what is panned right. You could, however, just record all the individual tracks AND the bounced tracks to the DAW. Then you’d have a combination of the bounced tracks and the individuals.
Hello, i'm thinking on buying a Model 16 have you had any problems with freezing on recordings? Seen a few posts with people having this problem. Thanks for the video too :)
I haven't had that problem. The only problem I have had, which I am able to fix every time, is when the sample rate changes on the computer it doesn't change automatically on the Tascam. When that happens the digital artifacts are horrendous!
@@patrickwood77 Thanks for swift reply. Cool I'm posting on all the videos i can find to see if it's a problem or any other quirks before buy. Thanks Again :)
@@patrickwood77 Thanks for your reply .. So is the Channel signal recorded post fader ? Full strip inclusive ? Or is it just a dry duplicate of the input pre strip? I was looking at the Soundcraft 22 MTK but the USB Channel outputs were pre strip so was looking at this Tascam.
@@mrfeenix1 good question. Short answer. The Tascam and the Soundcraft are the same over USB. All pre strip and fader. Basically just a mic pre. HOWEVER-on both units you could record out from the mains bus via usb and have all channels post strip and fader-but, they’d be summed l/r.
The only problem with this helpful video is that what you're actually doing at this stage is mixing down. To me that is not bouncing. My question is, how do I bounce a single track, without bouncing any others, before the mix down?
I see what you’re saying. I think of “bouncing” as mixing tracks together in order to open up more tracks. There isn’t a way (that I know of) to shift a track to a different track/channel on the Model 16. You could use the same technique and mute all other tracks and that would work. Maybe that’s not what you’re going for (especially since it requires real-time export) but that’s the only way I know of.
