  • Finally organised my stash and made a journal of every yarn I own! Well almost. Consider this a whistlestop stash tour & chat about how I choose yarns to design in 😊
    In this video I'm wearing my Lawrenson sweater, a vintage inspired puff sleeve sweater. The knitting pattern is available in 2 styles, a longer, straight version and a fitted sweater with waist shaping. The pattern is available here: www.ravelry.co...

    That's a lovely short sweater you are wearing. Love the puffy sleeves too.

    Design in readily available yarns. This way, you can use the discontinued yarn to make the item for yourself. What you publish is for business; what you knit for yourself is private. Lily, you have so much beautiful yarn use it before it rots.

      Unfortunately there's no distinction between what I publish and what I knit for myself - I can't justify knitting time for something that won't be released as a pattern! Occasionally I make a second sample of an existing design and that can be done using a discontinued yarn, but for the most part, my personal knitting has to be viable as a pattern. I'd never have the time to release anything otherwise!

    I have 4 of your designs on my favorites list to knit. I’m a fairly new knitter and started a podcast myself. I’m hoping to test knit in the future, sounds fun!

    Thanks for the chat! I loved seeing your book of yarn and hearing you talk about how you approach your business. I always look forward to seeing what design you are going to come up with next.

    Hi Lily thank you for sharing your yarn scrap book. It’s a great idea to have a visual record of what yarns you already own. I’ve used Ravelry before but agree it’s not very inspiring to do it digitally. I’m trying to use up some of my stash this year. Like you I’ve got a couple of discontinued yarns in sweater quantities and I really want to use them up first before bringing anything else into stash. Good to hear you will be podcasting regularly as I really enjoy hearing all your thoughts on your design processes.

    Your work is so beautiful... designs with very sophisticated details... they could be sold in very high end stores.....

      thank you very much! People have often suggested I sell the physical items but then I'd basically have to become a knitting machine and it would take the enjoyment out of it... I'd much rather knit 1 sample, sell the pattern digitally, and it have unlimited shelf life!

    I already keep notes of all my projects and include a scrap of the yarn I used but I've never seriously considered making a scrap book. What a great idea, especially using the black paper to enhance the yarn. Whilst I do take photos of my yarn and have most of them listed on Ravelry obviously you don't get the full effect just doing that. Thanks 😀
    PS Love the new haircut.

    Just finished my second Lawrenson Sweater. The first one was mostly by the book, the second one with a very different yarn and gauge so I had to adjust a few things. I love the construction where all the sweater weight does no apply to a few stitches only. I am now careful about construction after a few disappointments. I have another of your patterns in my queue (the Anyway Vest) I need to find time for. I have the yarn 😺

    Lily, you have inspired me to take the time to organize my yarns! I have so many one skein yarns that I need to use for something! I am not usually a scrappy knitter, so I don’t know what I have been thinking by buying only one skein. I love to visit yarn shops on my journeys, but don’t want to spend a lot of money, when I don’t have an idea what to knit with it. So out of guilt, I guess, I purchase only one skein. :/ Thank you for the idea to catalog my yarns… perhaps I’ll get some ideas. I believe you are being very wise with many of your decisions. Don’t allow others to influence you to knit with yarn you don’t really want to use. Lastly, I enjoy knitting (and sewing) while listening to your podcast, I’m not always looking up from my work, so don’t feel guilty if you are often looking down at yours! Blessings!

    • @lilykatemakes8358
      @lilykatemakes8358  2 роки тому +1

      Oh fabulous! Those single skeins sure are tricky - I'm not particularly a scrappy knitter either, but it's so tempting to just pick up one as a souvenir or at an event!
      I knit with podcasts in the background too so that is a very good point! I'll film whilst knitting again sometime :D Thanks for watching!

    could you please make a video on how to pickup stitches from cast on edge? I started making the Greystoke Cardigan and I am totally stuck at the part for Right Front where it says " rejoin yarn at cast on edge of back". I'm super beginner , I tried looking at videos on how to pick up at cast on edge but I see different ways of doing so and not sure which one is the right way OTL that would be super helpful if you could eventually add this to your list as your other instruction videos are really nice =)

    • @lilykatemakes8358
      @lilykatemakes8358  2 роки тому

      Thank you! To pick up along a cast on edge, you need to insert the needle through each 'V' as near to the cast on edge as possible. I'll add it to my list for next time I'm filming tutorials!

    Can you double lace and add mohair for different weight?

    • @lilykatemakes8358
      @lilykatemakes8358  2 роки тому

      I could do, yes! But it'd make for quite a unique texture, so not really something I could suggest for a pattern.
