  • Annual Oleander Pruning: Tips for Healthy Growth and Shape. This video provides a guide on how to prune oleander. There are different methods of pruning oleander, and the first one is to prune it annually during late summer or early fall. During this time, the plant has already bloomed for the season, and pruning won’t interfere with its blooming. It's essential to wear gloves when handling oleander because it's poisonous and can cause skin irritation and inflammation. When pruning, use sharp gardening shears to snip off new shoots at the base of the plant to avoid harm to the overall health of the plant. Cut oleander stems to about half the height you’d like for the overall plant and shape your oleander by cutting branches just above the leaf nodes. The second method is to remove dead growths, and you should check your plant every month or so for dead or damaged branches or blooms. Snip off damaged branches using sharp gardening shears or cut entire damaged stalks close to the roots. After pruning, fertilize the plant around three times a year and water it evenly to help its regrowth. Oleander can also be pruned into a tree shape by cutting off branches near the bottom of the plant. The best time to prune oleander is during late summer or early fall, and pruning too late can make the recently cut sections of the plant vulnerable during winter.
