Alan Shearer was unable to save his boyhood club from relegation in the 2008/09 Premier League season. Having been appointed as Newcastle manager with 8 games to go, their fate was sealed on the final day of the season as they lost 1-0 to Aston Villa.

Still feel sorry for Alan after all these years. He did his absolute best for his boyhood club and was let down by the fat cat owners. Thankfully his legacy as a player was so immense, people quickly forgot about this.
With NO support and an ailing Owen, who the fuck would’ve kept them up? I’m glad he isn’t raked over coals about it, Ashley didn’t/hasn’t done enough to grow Newcastle.
I bet Alan wished he was on the pitch to finish those chances to keep them up
Johan Ralle Southampton.
Johan Ralle: yes he’s associated as a player originally with Southampton. The title is misleading although Shearer is from Newcastle so perhaps thats the ‘boyhood’ association.
SEAN INGRAM Sadly, you’re right. Owen kinda drove me bananas in that he had ALL the options in the world and he always seems to make it
Sound forced. Chose your club of choice and play your arse off for them. Simply
He was brought in for the final 8 games but the damage was already done.
That's the thing
2009 is retro...good lord we’re getting old
Lol

Yeah man 11 years nearly 12 in a few months time
@Ivanhoe ॐ graham fenton, that name still hurts me
Wow, didn't realise how diplomatic his responses were at the time. His comments were totally correct.
Reminds me of his commentary. Always honest and expresses how he really feels.
He’s a mug
Now the people and media are soft if you talk tough they will murder you look at mourinho
Ed Glenn your comment sums up your generation, arrogant and full of themselves
Ricky Dong Dong salty mackem?
This wasn’t on him. This was Mike Ashley and his army of pathetic yes men’s doing.
Ashley been there for that long ?? Holy fuck
Agreed. And it fucking sucks man, Newcastle had (can’t know how this pandemic is gonna change or affect things till we’re all back) a following, a legion of fans! Even a mediocre owner would’ve been able to make a few signings to get the fans excited and keep them up. Disgraceful piece of shit. And I’m a Man United fan btw, it just pisses me right off.
@@ziudra91 13 years mate.
What’s funny is people say you call force a owner to sell. Mike Ashley proves otherwise
The players were a bunch of bottlers that year.
I'm no Newcastle fan but in fairness to Shearer, he only had 8 games to keep them up. Credit to him for taking the job but it practically ruined his managerial career. The fact that Owen had the audacity to slag him off in his book is unbelievable.
Owen is hated by every fan base of every team he played for 😄😄😄
@@ChrisCollins0928 Because all Michael Owen cares about is Michael Owen.
Shearer didn’t deserve to be put in that position at that time, He’s a hero on Tyneside he’s Newcastle’s GOD
@@Danqz97 he is referring to a football clique! Im sure he doesn't think Shearer is a actual God! It a term many footie fans use for their heros. As a Christian I dont think telling people this,in this situation, is what God would have people do/say! You come across as a religious puritan. Christ preached love and belief in Him as the way to eternal life. Not following religious rules!
red men thank you my brother 🙏❤️
christ religion is scary. How can you be brainwashed like that?
Yes Absolutely

Inside his head “I hate Owen... I hate Owen... I hate Owen”
Wasn't Owen's fault though
@@jn6711 he has to take some blame
Hate seeing Owen get blamed for this. He was physically absolutely wrecked at this point in his career and did what he could. But he was only a good quality premier striker by 2009. He got a good couple of years at Man Utd after this as a squad player but the lad was utterly done.
@@tsb3208 - He was quiet happy to slate Newcastle and their fans off though while taking a massive paycheck from us 😑
@@ChrisCollins0928 I would have too if I were him. You lot were bang out of order and looking for a scapegoat when it came to Owen. And it couldn't have been Saint Shearer at fault, could it. He can do no wrong, despite asking an injured player to risk their physical wellbeing.
This relegation was one of the best things to happen to us, giving us time to clear the players that did not want to be there and rebuild. No one blames Shearer for it - still a HERO
Literally fast forward 11 years and nothing has changed at all, poor team poor ownership, fans still waiting for better times! And people wonder why we want ashley out!?
@David Evans are you a Newcastle United Fc fan?
Be grateful. At least youre not Sunderland
Just because I'm a newcastle fan and our rivals are terrible doesnt mean I can be happy and satisfied with the way my club is been run and destroyed by ashley, sunderland could dissappear forever and id still be unhappy with the regime of ashley.
Nobody wonders why
@David Evans I mean you have suffered 2 relegations under him. One in 2009 (as demonstrated in the video with Alan Shearer) and one in 2016.
Alan Shearer doesn’t deserve blame for Newcastle’s relegation. The team was a sinking ship.
Yep when you’ve got players and staff casually turning up late to training, and in helicopters there’s a big issue.
People expect miracles from football managers, but most of the time it doesn’t work like that.
11 years on the club still continues to stagnate under Mike Ashley's ownership. ⚫⚪
you guys deserve the mega rich owners to splurge, newcastle has always attracted types of players and you guys have a decent scout system in france, its a side that should be aiming for europa spots.

Alan Shearer Newcastle Legend! ⚫⚪
legend.
I don't think this is the video to be saying that haha.
No way
@@sukhdevr3489 Not his fault
@@jamiehope9696 Yeah but he still could've saved them had they beaten Aston Villa. That wasn't my point though
The interviewer was a bit of an idiot for saying ‘you look close to tears’
the fact that not long after this Sir Bobby Robson died must have been awful for him, probably the worst experience he will ever go through
i'm Dutch.... I noticed Shearer when he played at Blackburn. I heard the chants "Alan Sheareher... AAllaan Shearerer".
Then I saw him scoring goals for Newcastle with passion and love for that club. Oh yeah, some goals for England too. Great pundit.
Legend.
great pundit? predctable and repetitive more like lad.
Interviewer: your tears are almost there please cry..
If I remember this was season Michael Owen refuse to play for Newcastle United. Getting £100,000 per week wages at the club crying I've got sore foot.
Yes he should play injured. Shearer failed and blamed him. That punk didnt even dare to tell him accusations face to face.
@@regiment589 if you read the book by Alan shearer he wasn't injured (physio cleared him) the last day when he shearer asked him to play he said no otherwise if he gets injured he can't get a move
Ollie Stevens during interviews Owen has said that if he played as well as he could he would get another major injury. Every time he got injured his confidence dropped and ultimately became a player with less skill
do you blame him? playing at liverpool and Madrid and then all of a sudden your at Newcastle United fighting relegation with the weight of the whole world on your shoulders.. they call him Michael Owen not Jesus
@George Byrne integrity? you do realise we are talking about guys who are 'professionals' at kicking around a ball of air.. these guys don't have an ounce of integrity in their bodies.. they were brought up inside a bubble kicking a bubble. Explains why they were celebrating with champagne, cigars and holidays after they got kicked out the world cup too..
Like if they should do Deeney's speech on Arsenal not having any cojones next
Won't get the licensing because it was on BT sport
And when he said the ref bottled it
@@Danqz97 I'm not obsessed. It was just a suggestion
Or better yet question Deeney about his cojones in an interview this Sunday after Watford get relegated 👀
And there’s Watford fighting for relegation, looks like they have no cojones too.
Hahaha when Geoff said hes close to tears and hes not, defo annoyed him 😂
Absolutely devastated that we were relegated and I felt bad for Alan. The season was absolutely disastrous and chaotic. Undermining King Kev appointment of Joe and the sale of Milner and Given
Best prem striker of all time
@Alberto nevermind sorry
Ibrahimovic.....
@@franqueworren7323 No he didn't jackass, he played in the Premier League for 13 years and his premiership career started when he was 22 years old.
He scored the most (and playing as the focal point of his teams played a huge part in it) but in terms of talent, skill and quality he’s nowhere near the best striker ever in PL.
Depends how you define the best striker. The records don't lie. If Shearer had played for Arsenal he would have likely scored even more...
Very honest interview. Wears his heart on his sleeve!
His hair got relegated soon after
He actually looks much better with no hair.
His hair is the hair of the wise something you Lil chaps don't know about
He's one of thos people with a great symmetrical face no matter what haircut or bald he'll always look good.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You’re hilarious you should be a stand up comedian
Newcastle legend. England legend. Football legend.
he won nothin
Mr.Chillax a premier league? Three golden boots? The only reason he didn’t win as much was because he wanted to go to his boyhood club newcastle, man united wanted him badly, juve wanted him and barca wanted him but he wasn’t greedy. Are you saying he isn’t a legend?
@@MrCAFC Another plastic foreigner who chose a team cos they win trophies. Imagine how insecure you've got to be to pick a club you've got no connection to. Little nobody 😂😂😂😂
Shearer is a stoic guy, he really felt it in this interview, i remember it from the time
“HINDSIGHT” Steve Bruce’s favoured word after every defeat.
If you want a perfect example of a football fan look at Alan Shearer. I felt for him here I really did.
Watching this in 2023, the day after UCL qualification. He was there at St James's celebrating and he deserved it.
This was a start, not an end. HWTL!
A truly great footballer who followed his heart to sign for his team Newcastle United and turned down the chance to go to Manchester United
Shearer in the dressing room 3-0 down at half time : ‘It could have been 5 or 6’.
In just 10 years Alan shearer went from 30 years old to 50 year old

Alan still a legend and will always be.
He stood very little chance with 8 games. He wasn't a manager in this interview, he's a fan telling you how it is. Unfortunately the school playground that is social media still use it against him and its so wide of the mark.
Geordie through and through
Me and my fellow toon turnips were all emotional and the river Tyne was overflowing with our tears
I highly recommend that you read the book the boy on the shed by Paul ferris, not just because of Alan shearer but mainly for Newcastle.
"In my opinion, yes"
He said that so instinctively that it's still true now. Class.
The most hurt I ever was after a game of football was the game before this at home to Fulham were we played them off the park and viduka had a perfectly good goal disallowed and we ended up losing 0-1... genuinely thought after the game we beat boro that it was a turning point in our history and that we would kick on with Shearer..... you can see how hurt Shearer is after this, if only we had someone who cares this much now in charge in some capacity
"in what way have you not been good enough?"
*We didn't score enough goals and we conceded too many*
Simple
Very diplomatic response.
I remember watching the game in a pub in London, don't think they had a shot on target, later on that weekend my and several friends went to Wembley and watch Burnley win promotion to the Premier League, great weekend
One of the worst days of my life
Alan Sherear was very careful in his interview but what he said was a brilliant said what he had to say didn't want to go any further and he was spot on very dignified interview
0:12 when the post but clarity hits
Lmao
Newcastle great club..him..great striker!!as a person..it was deserved .
Funnily enough the big change he was really talking about has still to happen lol
Being in my recommended whilst Newcastle are fighting relegation again, good win against the saints though!
Newcastle & England legend. Likeable chap & as you can see here hurting as his club is relegated.
Passion, straight talking and honesty... which is why he was sacked.
He did an alright job with what he had to work with. I'll always remember that win against Middlesbrough
Do "Shearer Kicks Neil Lennon In The Head"!
U mean Lennon headbutt his boot
Hugh Janus wooow that’s really disrespectful, man should really respect his boots too, they got feelings y’know just because boots are a different gender to us doesn’t mean we have to disrespect them, really classless act by Neil Lennon and I apologize on his behalf as I actually was his Uncle’s roommate, anyway think we should headbutt some sense onto that lad’s head.......
‘From ‘top’ to bottom’ big hint that he wanted Mike Ashley out
He is absolutely devastated. He was totally honest the players should have been ashamed of themselves...embarrassing not the word......funny thing is he properly knows if he was out there even at his age he could have made a difference
2 days later.....
Alan do you want to be manager?
"HELL NO!!"
Key words that have never, ever changed. "The fans deserved better."
Chris Hughton😍
We were down before Shearer took the job hopefully this takeover gets pushed through we have been through enough time for a change
At least he got his hands the Sports Direct cup!
Jeff: Alan you look close to tears
Alan: I'm not close to tears I'm disappointed I'm angry and I'm hurt.
Shearer was there as close to tears as you can get. But his still a top player and guy in my book footballer are not like this today.
i bet he was a lot closer to tears than this when Sir Bobby died.
Big Respect for Alan Shearer from Turkey!!
Damage had been done ages ago! When King Kev was sacked it was all down hill. Same as Rafa, if he came in earlier then maybe. Still the biggest legend in Toon history ⚫⚪
Hello Alan Shearer. Thanks for everything you done for Newcastle in ten years. You’ll will be knighted and be given. Lead broadcaster role on motd. When Gary Lineker retires. What captain what a player Geordie legend. Not just a sheetmetal workers son from gosforth
11 years on Mike Ashley hasn’t changed his ways at Newcastle
Best premier league striker ever , LEGEND 🌟
After Owen refused to play...
Emotion has to come out of situations like this , if a team don't consistently perform what do u expect? A miracle?
he was never going to keep them up with tactical turnarounds but to somehow evoke some passion and motivate the team. if shearer couldn't get that team to fight for it no one could have,
This was pretty much a case "never meet your heroes" for Alan.
What do you mean?
@@me-ju3fv Alan loves Newcastle United. What should have been an unbelievable experience turned out to be very sour.
Being a great footballer, doesn't make you a great manager, if players don't want to fight n grind, not alot you can do about it.
Is this the one Micheal Owen said he was injured for
11 years ago!
👑 Still to this day Alan Shearer is the Premier league King 🤴 👑
Shearer cud take us down 4 seasons in the trot but he will always b a god on tynside.
I remember watching the match live and thinking how the players didn't seem to have the bit between their teeth and any confidence or conviction to win. All they had to do was draw to stay up. I felt Shearer had did what he could in the 8 games or so he had in charge. After they conceded they never really threatened or moved the ball forward effectively to get a goal back. Two draws and a win was not enough from the 8 games- but they should have beaten Portsmouth instead of drawing which would have been enough to keep them up, if the rest of the results remained the same. Shearer wanted the job long before the terrible hand he was given. Still, it wasn't quite a relegation shock in the same vein as Leeds or West Ham. The players which were at West Ham went onto bigger things, 6 of which featured in the first teams of the champions league final in 2008. Actually, 3 of the Leeds players which were relegated also got relegated with Newcastle in 2008 in James Milner, Mark Viduka and Alan Smith.. They also had the likes of Owen, Duff, Obefemi Martins, Shay Given, Jose Enrique, Andy Carrol (albeit very young), Joey Barton (ok he's more a familiar/notorious name than a big one) and Kieron Dyer. Scrap that, it was up there with those two.
Thank you Shearer for taking newcastle to the championship were they belong , a humble sunderland fan
😂😂😂😂😂
Enjoy life in the Championship mate
