Really love the video. Great work, as usual!
Question: If Jesus is Divine then he is necessary, however, if he is human he is contingent. Can something really be both necessary and contingent at the same time?
Maybe a way of thinking through this paradox is that Divine implies Jesus’ previous existence before becoming flesh on earth. Human refers to Jesus’ time on earth (John 1:14). If he sinned he could not "return to heaven" because a barrier would have been created between him and God. During his time on earth Jesus was like Adam before his (Adam’s) Fall from Grace: born without sin, pure, innocent and from birth had a special relationship with God like no other. And like Adam he could Fall. That was the BIG risk, and accepting this risk was the sacrifice that God and Jesus made for us. They put their relationship on the line. If we lead our lives according to Jesus' teachings then we too can do the things he has done and enjoy that "special" relationship with God.
We, however are not like Adam in that we are born in sin (Calvin, Augustine) and a barrier exists between us and God at birth. This begs the question: in the light of his (unparalleled) advantages / privileges is it fair to think that Jesus is a fitting example for us as a way back to Grace? Is it even reasonable to expect that we can come close to being like Christ in the light of our inherent disadvantages from birth, i.e., we were not born with "Jesus privilege"?

Hi Pete, great question! I think it is a very interesting question to pose then explore in an essay. I think the question more is: do you think something can be both necessary and contingent - I think that you answer to this question and would really help you formulate a strong line of argument :)

Jesus has two natures, human and divine. It is a fallacy to conflate the two. He is necessary in his deity, but contingent in his humanity.

Thank you for this video Ms. Please can you make A video on what we need to revise for ocr religious studies A level. In my school my religious studies teacher went on maternity leave. So we just have a cover teacher and we don't have someone to go through the advance warning with us.
    Thank you very much

hi miss thank you for these videos it saving my grade.
I’m stuck on answering the question ‘Jesus was more than a political liberator’, would i link this to him being the Son of God as well as a teacher and not just a liberator? also if the question asked ‘if he was more than a teacher of wisdom’ for example, would i link it to the other parts as well?
also there was another question asking ‘there is a unique relationship between Jesus and God’ would i only link this to the Divine part of Jesus’ nature and not the teacher and liberator part?
sorry if that didn’t make sense x

Hi, sorry for the slow reply. So pleased my videos are helping :) if Q on liberator I would stick with liberator unless you clearly link the other areas to it e.g through his moral teachings he was liberating his listeners and making a political stance through his teachings.
If Q on 'more than a teacher' I would discuss other areas in relation to this and whether these areas show he was more than just a teacher or not.
If Q on unique relationship you could discuss all areas to see if he was just a man or whether the special relationship between Jesus and God made him able to do the teachings, liberating and miracles ect.
Main thing to remember is if you link everything to the question then everything is relevant but do not add sections in that you cannot link. Missing out sections will not count against you but adding something in that you don't link fully could be detrimental to your essay. Hope this helps :)

Your claim that Jesus never claimed to be the Son of God is patently false. In Mark 12 Jesus claimed to be God's Son in the parable of the wicked tenants of the vineyard. God called Jesus His Son in Mark 1:11. Jesus claimed to be the Son of God in Mark 14. Demons called Jesus the Son of God who could destroy them. (Luke 4:41; 8:28). Jesus claims to be God's Son in Matthew 11:27.

Thank you for your comment. For students sitting the A level, they have to discuss whether Jesus knew he was divine/Son. The references you give are how others treat Jesus, Mark 12 Jesus speaks as a parable not himself directly and Matthew has multiple interpretations of his place as 'Son.' You have raised some very interesting areas that will add discussion and depth to students completing the materials assigned by their examboard :)
