  • Botanical name: Scadoxus multiflorus
    Common name: Blood lily
    Family: Amaryllidaceae
    Plant Type: Bulb
Scadoxus multiflorus is a tender bulb native to tropical east and south Africa. It’s grown for its spectacular blood-red inflorescences that give rise to its common name of blood lily.
These bulbous perennials are easy to grow provided they’re kept frost-free and relatively dry over winter, while dormant. In late spring they can be planted out into sheltered, warm borders to provide bursts of midsummer colour.
For best results, grow Scadoxus multiflorus in full sun or partial shade in humus-rich, well-drained soil, in a sheltered spot. Lift the bulbs in autumn before frosts arrive, pot them up and store somewhere frost-free, such as a conservatory or greenhouse. They could also be grown in a pot all-year round that can be moved around at will.
Sun exposure: Dappled shade, partial shade
    Hardiness: Tender
Soil type: Well drained / light / sandy
