Hey Zuffy, a short critique on your drawings at 18:20. You already know this, but I think a problem that you have when you draw your heads atm is that the faces looks too flat. its mostly fine when the perspective is looking up, but when we a looking at the character from above, it starts looking flater. A way to help fix this is by drawing real humans or using them as reference. For example, you can use a picture of a real person and draw them. Then compare the drawing to the image by overlying them to see where you went wrong. You can also use that reference and draw it into a anime style. I think you have already have a rough idea of the face by studying it, but to understand how it works you need to pay very close attention to how the features of the face are placed in relation with each other. In other words you have to pay extremely close attention to the forms of a face in a 3d environment and transfer it into 2d. The face is a very delicate and complex part of the human, so it'll take awhile, even years to get really proficient at it. For example, when drawing eyebrows, look at where they are placed in relation with the eyes in perspective. The eyes are always caved in the face, this means that if you are drawing the face in like 3/4 looking left, the eyebrow on the right will for the most part always be left of the the eye due to the difference in elevation. My scuffed looking eye at the bottom for example. You already got it on most perspectives, but on the more difficult perspectives, the position of the eyebrows gets a little bit rougher. Like the middle top left drawing where the right eyebrow doesn't match the forms of the face. ..::::::::::::..\ ........:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::............ 1 1 \ 1 1 1 00000000\ 00000000000000000.... .0 1 O 1\ 000 11 O 00.. , 1 1 1 1 1 .. 1 1 11 Easier said than done, but keep on practicing, observe carefully, and don't be afraid to use references, you'll shoot yourself in the foot if you don't.
I've been drawing since age 5, and didn't exactly IMPROVE improve until my late teens. Meanwhile, Zuffy has managed to make legitimate art from nothing in the span of less than a year. This man is gonna be the next Picasso.
Me throughout the entire video when he's like "I know anatomy and perspective! But idk what's wrong with these faces!" My friend, even professional artists are always learning, so my best advice to you is to never assume you already know something perfectly, especially when you know the drawing you're creating feels off :) it's quite fun seeing him figure out things that to me jump out as quite obvious. But I know that it's so much harder to be objective about your own work, since well, it's yours! It's the skill you're at right now. Of course the mistakes aren't obvious yet. Its also why I like looking back at my old art to notice where I have improved over time. It's super cool seeing you improve like this, that torso glow up was especially good! Anyway, make sure you pay attention to all aspects of the face - even after noticing the thing about how the eyelids wrap around the eyes as a 3d shape some of the faces are still quite flat. I think the nose is part of the issue here as you seem to not want to draw the nose "overlapping" the face's edge line/breaking the silhouette of the face or other features, but at extreme angles it's very likely it will at least partially cover over the eye, cheek, or lips, you know? Anyway, keep up the great work, just keep chasing those mistakes and working hard 💪
I'm sorry for writing so many comments. You always need a reference for your drawing, no pro just draws all their poses from imagination, if your want your stuff to look good, you need a refecence. Btw. I really admire how hard you are pushing yourself with this, you are doing great progress my man
Not true. You don’t always need a reference. If you look at some manga artists drawing processes, they don’t use a reference. Of course, they might in other pieces, but it’s not always needed.
Because they've been drawing for decades, and already spent years drawing with references to build their visual library. You DO absolutely need to live and die by the reference as a beginner if you want to improve quickly. You can't just draw something if it isn't in your visual library, art isn't magic
You are doing amazing! From a fairly experienced artist - you are doing incredibly well. It’s rare to see someone work this hard in the way you do. This is super inspiring and makes me want to work hard at my own art! I’ve been here since this first art video and I hope to see many more!
My man, I just stumbled upon your first 10 days video and watched all you journey and it's really inspiring, I've been meaning to do something similar for years but can't bring myself to begin and seeing you pushing through your limits and struggles to keep on improving is super motivating
Whenever I start plateauing I go back to my traditional art roots and try new things and reevaluate my art, it simultaneously improves my art and makes me feel better about my self
I feel like he’s making good progress but also he might’ve gotten past the current plateau with a few hours of coaching. There are a few common mistakes being made, like the face being flat, head not tall enough, or the hair being rigid, that could’ve easily been pointed out earlier. Also a tip for better immediate results if you’re making a product: try varying opacity and line weight. Full opacity and thick lines only work when you know exactly where to place everything, and it often looks better to have no lines than too much lines (like in the hair). And even a nicely placed nose or mouth might look odd if you use a very thick line that oversizes them. Full opacity is good for practice though since it discourages feathering and overdoing small details of course. But you could probably try both and see the difference.
ive been self taught all my life and i never use reference or sketches and can just make a piece from nothing but watching your first art piece made me realize that because of my already vast understanding of art, learning the way you did would make me better and it really worked! for the past months ive gotten infinitely better at drawing and I cant help but credit you atleast a little. Also with the torso box method, try adding a bit more lenght to the line that connects the chest to the hips
So to understand why using a box is easier when drawing in perspective is that’s actually the point behind using them, using a box is another form of simplifying perspective to more easily understand it, while loomis method (or whatever the face one is) is mainly focused on understanding how to proportion your head and simplify the anatomy. The reason why boxes aren’t the best is because they don’t properly follow the 3D form of a head. Sorry if you already know this, I only watched 8 minutes so far and just wanted to explain quickly
Also the reason why a lot of artist hate on boxes/ don't recomend them: Most things in our world are not made out of boxes which is why using a box as a scaffolding makes them look a bit unnatural and you don't get to fully grasp and comprehend the shape you are trying to represent and/or how it feels in a 3D envoirement. It might make it easier to draw and look good, but not to understand what you draw.
Hey Zuffy, i have a quick question: Do you want to retry Drawabox? I started because of you videos, so i curious to know if you will finish more lessons after 2
your poses are a bit stiff have you tried life figure drawing it may help since its all about flowing lines and copying poses it should help with anatomy since its all about learning how the body bends so you dont break poses
if you know something is wrong but don't know what exactly you can always give your drawing to someone to critique f.e. at 18:15 I can tell you do not give enough volume to your cheekbones and brow ridges - normally the left side of the face would have a bit of an S shape, with a convex peak near the cheek and concave dent between cheek and brow - where the eye is just fixing that would improve your faces, me thinks

The problem is: you're trying to get good at drawing anime with practicing drawing in anime style. Feels like an obvious nonsense but think about it: all your favorite anime artists, without exeptions, have learned and practiced from reality. They have practiced drawing by photos or live models, then turned to draw anime. Its will always be easier to draw anime compared to realism. I gave it a try latelly. Im an artist who do real life figures. Latelly, I started to do cartoons and anime. It end up to be really easy, really easier than in my memory. Its like asking a 8core alienwire pc to run tetris. Like: piece of cakes. Try realism. You will rush af. Then thrive. Then after a while when you gonna do anime, you gonna feel in godmode. Thank me later.
10:20 but you will bro.... the author of vagabond used soo many references drawing his manga. You also should warm yourself up to use them, think of it like this, drawing with no reference is like lifting with no weights. And secondly hiding your reference??? That is not the way bro, try to understand the reference, imagine it in 3d and think about how the artist drew it.
i actually think this is a good practice. ofc drawing with a ref is important but if you want to learn to draw fast learning gradually how to bring ideas from your head to the page without looking for a fitting refrence can speed up the progress by alot edit: so my point is, alternating between types of practice keeps the muscles active and is actually helpful
instead of using only boxes for the body like the torsos I think using more organic shapes makes the whole thing feel less blocky, helps in drawing different types of bodies and also makes things feel less stiff! your videos are so entertaining and i love watching your progress!! ~\(≧▽≦)/~
bro spent 55 days learning what i learnt from pin. in one day. Am not poking fun at you But wait till you get to folds. That 's hard at first but super easy
This is part 2 of my 100 day challenge I challenged myself, Part 3 will be out tmr :)
keep going!!

I started a year ago and still draw like a beginner. My brain is busted bro TELL ME YOUR CHEAT CODES WISE ONE
