  • A lower electric bill can start with a ceiling fan. BUT, that ceiling fan must be running in the right direction.
This video demonstrates the correct direction for ceiling fans in summer, common problems with ceiling fan direction, and how to check your ceiling fan is running in the right direction for maximum cooling in summer.
What if the ceiling fan is wired incorrectly? What if you ceiling fan switch is side-to-side instead of up and down? We've got you covered.

Would have been nice to have been shown the direction for summer/winter. Looking up at it looks like clockwise for winter ??

Ernie, thanks so much for the feedback and for watching. It really depends on the wiring of the fan and the pitch of the blades. That’s why I talk about feeling the air flow. All ceiling fans are NOT created equal. Thanks again!

Clockwise vs. counterclockwise doesn't really work for communicating this, both because it depends on how the blades are angled and because it depends on whether you're looking at the fan from below or from above.
If you want the air blowing downward, the fan needs to turn so that the leading edges of the blades are above and the trailing edges are below.
If it's a vertical a fan and you're facing it with the air blowing onto you, the leading edges of the blades are behind and the trailing edges are in front. (If the blades are curved, you can see this more easily by looking at them edge on.)
So, the leading edges of the fan blades are tilted in the direction opposite the direction in which the air blows.
The diagram with the arrows needs fixing.

Ha. That's a good one that I haven't heard in a long time. It has always bugged me how we talk about clockwise and counterclockwise like they are absolute directions, when so often the thing that's turning could be looked at from either side.
I tried plugging in all four of our vertical fans to see how they compare to the ceiling fan. They all have the blades angled the opposite way from the ones on the ceiling fan, with the rotors going the other direction. If I mounted them on the ceiling to blow air downward like I have the ceiling fan doing, they'd be turning in the opposite direction. (Pun intended.) So it looks like vertical household fans use the opposite standard.
I also noticed this time that our ceiling fan has just every other blade angled like that. It's like the one you showed. I'm guessing this is standard, too, but I don't really know. Do ceiling fan designs vary much?

    • @FieldGuidetoDIY

Great question Jazz Man! The answer is it depends on the wiring of the ceiling fan and also which direction the manufacturer pitched the fan blades. Because of that you have to feel the air flow; blowing down in the summer and drawing up in the winter. Thanks so much for asking.

not a very good guide. have just had us look at the fan blade diagonal, and show examples of each movement (clockwise or counter clockwise) - showing it "cut and push air down" with blades faced like \ you want it counter-clockwise. if your blades for some reason face / it would be the opposite effect. (counter-clockwise would scoop air up, the desired effect in colder seasons) the whole 'up down' and 'feel' doesn't make sense as people will all have different opinions on it, and even placebo effect on 'feeling' airflow.

Too many sensitive comments. If the wind isn't blowing down (summer) then, flick the switch.
If you have a "hugger" fan (close to a low ceiling), I find it works best to leave it in "upward" blowing mode to disperse the ceiling heat better.

  • @AZHITW
    @AZHITW 2 місяці тому +1

If Hunter fan representative ever reads these comments, I have to say putting the switch to reverse the blades on top of the motor is lousy placement I say this as a 75-year-old woman with vaulted ceilings who had to climb a ladder repeatedly to clean the blades, then the light fixture dome, and twice to find the stupid switch. Rant over.

Look at the blade angle and you’ll know which way the air will get pushed. I watched to see your view on this and we are both in agreement on the direction for both seasons. I try to tell people the concept of the directions but no one listens. Don’t they wonder why the fan has the directional switch in the first place?? Well maybe you’ll get the word out.
