  • 100km North of Carnarvon just 2 kilometers off the Gnaraloo Road at Cape Cuvier you can view spectacular 90m high sea cliffs. The French named them in 1801 during a research voyage to Australia after the famous French Naturalist and Zoologist, Georges Cuvier. He was a major figure in natural sciences at the time and is often referred to today as the father of Palaeontology.
Collision of the Australian and Asian tectonic plates in the Late Miocene, some 5mya uplifted the area. Since then, extensive erosion has exposed Eocene, Miocene and Pleistocene strata in a 90m vertical cliff face. The drone flies over Garth's Rock, a treacherous fishing rock platform at the base of the cliffs. From the top of the cliff's glimpses of manta rays, sharks, whales and shoals of bait fish are highlight of the visit. To the south Cape Cuvier jetty and Port facilities export Gypsum and Salt mined at Lake MacLeod 16 km to the east.
