Have been waiting for this one! Mr. Blakey is one of my musical heroes. Got to hang with him at a wedding party when I was a kid and learned all about Art the human being. A beautiful cat.

Thanks a ton for this! Blakey and Elvin are my favorite drummers from that whole bebop and post-bebop era. I'm working on the Mozambique groove...working on "Night in Tunisia," so I'm in a bit of a Blakey mood right now. Love how you pointed out that Blakey had both power and finesse. I was hit with that when I was working on the "Moanin'" groove. That jazz shuffle is so beautiful and graceful...but so easy to slip out of when ya haven't played it in a while.

Glad to help! Blakey and Elvin or two powerhouses who both had such incredible touch, finesse and musicality. Cheers my man!

#4 is a great alternative to just playing a standard mambo. I remember he uses that groove during the intro to "Minority." I'll definitely shed that one a bit.

    Amazing lesson!
That 4 stroke ruff and the one that uses Bill Stewart share a lot!
Man, I just love the way you never stop grooving, even when your hands don't do what you want.
You are an amazing drummer and teacher!

My favorite Blakey album is the one with Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Doug Watkins, and Donald Byrd. A great album recorded in the 50s . Thanks for the Blakey lesson, he was a driving force and one of the greatest drummers ever.

It is a great luck for me to be able to receive these lessons...Today in particular, from the hand of a teacher, to learn some of the phrases of the great Art Blakey. Something characteristic of him for me is a mixture of atavistic rhythms and sophistication in perfect combination. It's hypnotic...

@@drumqtips yes, I have watched that one and it’s a great video on press rolls. Towards the end of that one you talk about changing the rate of your hands or decreasing the rate. Blakey was the master of that, while he kept that ironclad inner time, and/or against his feet in time. This idea destroys my students and took me a long time to understand. The way Blakey would intensify his roll by moving his hands at a completely different rate than the eighths, triplets or sixteenths that might work at that tempo. (Sorry about the long, winded reply!!)
