Thank you for looking at this performance. I love this band. As a piano player, my focus has always been on Bobby TImmons, but I really appreciated Art Blakey. I love the times where he's really digging it, and he switches to some very heavy ride symbol that swings so hard. A master of keeping the grove.
So LOVE these reaction videos A Night It n Tunisia is probably one my all time favourite jazz tunes written by Dizzy but developed by the late great Art Blakey and wonderful Messenges I think I've mentioned before I particularly like his bands recorded version I owned it in cassette tape but was stolen from a hotel room in Greece in the early 90s I have since bought a CD so still loving it!!! What I really love about Blakey's playing is his powerhouse style tremendous drive and amazing groove and it proves beyond any doubt considering how many amazingly talented musicians came through The Messengers what a giant of drummers he really was👏🥁☠️
Drums around the corner and his Africa album ....having lived in West Africa fir 2yrs..studying vodun music ..I can really appreciate Art interpretation of those Ancient Dahomey rhythms..taking it new level..under the guise of jazz.
There were so many incredible incarnations of the Jazz Messengers over the years, but the Moanin' line up with Timmons, Merritt, Golson and Morgan remains my absolute favorite. How they played together is just amazing. Of the classic jazz era drummers, Art is my biggest influence. His sense of groove and style are what I always aim for in my playing every time I'm on the bandstand. Thanks Q for the video as always.
Art Blakey :D I experienced his Jazz Messengers several times live in the 1970s and 1980s in Copenhagen and in the Netherlands. Always an experience. One of the concerts was with the young Winton Marsalis. Cool energy! Benny Golson & Lee Morgan - wow!!!
Haha thanks for the shoutout! Your pronunciation wasn’t bad too! Like many jazz drummers, Art Blakey was one of my first big influences! Such great feel and power!!!
Zildjian used to call the ride cymbal a "dance" cymbal, & watching Art Blakey play this cymbal I can see why they called it a dance cymbal. Like a dancer seemingly making contact with the floor only here & there, Blakey seems to let the stick bounce off the cymbal quite a bit & then directs it back to the cymbal. It's as if he's concentrating the energy more above the cymbal than right on top of it. Like the stick return is more important than the stick hitting the cymbal. Thanks Quincey, excellent video!
Love this video Quincy. Art Blakey inspired me into jazz drumming. My hero and timeless inspiration. I've only transcribed two of his drum solos. But find myself playing like him anyway. Thanks for this video once again. Great reminder of my journey and where it began with learning jazz.
Hello Q! My mother introduced to Art Blakey and Oscar Peterson when I was a kid! And last years i'm rediscovering this greats! This video, I already have watched plenty of times and I enjoyed watching it again with you! Thanks for the breakdown! I'm learning a lot of stuff! Have a nice week!!!
BTW, you are the man! Last month I was doing a session in an organ player house and he made me listen a record of an organist who I forgot the name and I was like: Damn, this drummer is killin' it, what is his name? And he said, QUINCY DAVIS. As I said, the man!
Thanks for sharing this great video Quincy, it's another real masterpiece. I have always admired Art for his drumming and he was also a great band leader. And he was super fast on the bass drum. Greetings Erwin
Thanks for sharing such tes great video concert, Master Art Blakey is and will allways be such a foundation of our instrument....not for technical aspects but for spirit, soul and energy
Thanks for the shoutout and the video. I had to look up the definition of powerful to comment. The first definition I saw was “having control and influence over people and events”. So, by that definition he might be the most powerful of all time. And you almost made me spit my coffee when you yelled out “Allen Iverson!”. FP
Great video, and commentary. Art always had a way of incorporating African drumming influences into everything; I feel this way about Elvin as well. The truth is this: Allan Iverson is my favourite basketball player, and I just feel Gretsch drums ✌🏼
Yes Quincy! Thanks for a great moment in your company and that of one of the coolest drummers to ever do it. We got to mention Mr Blakey's tailor too! How is he doing those crossed arms in that skinny jacket! One of the most joyful drummers one can watch and of course a great jazz educator like yourself 🥁💯✌🏼
This is my favorite Jazz Messengers lineup, and this is one of my favorite Blakey UA-cam clips. I think he actually knocks one of the cymbals down near the end.😁
Just started following today and I’ve watched every reaction video. Incredibly inspiring content. I could watch these reaction videos all day. Why pay for lessons when I get watch this?!
Question not related to this. Can you give a lesson on effective ways to play loud styles quietly while keeping the feel and sound? Thanks ahead of time and for all the great content and lessons!!
one of the things i've wondered about is what do drummer like Art Blakey or Max Roach--insert anybody's name---do when they are no longer young and can't do the things they used to when they were in their peak years. How do they compensate?
Hey Quincy from Ned in Spain, I knew you knew it and thank you for the shout out. Back again for another lesson and what a lesson it is. Man, Art Blakey not only lifts that right hand he lifts the bandstand. So powerful and full of joy. One of my goals this year is to really woodshed a whole lot so I' will look into your courses and be back for more videos. Here"s a couple for you in case you don't know them. Jack McDuff, George Benson , Red Holloway and Joe Dukes 1964 ua-cam.com/video/ivYFzlapYTA/v-deo.html. Down Beat 1976 jazz fusion heaven ua-cam.com/video/r1v9qV1v4-c/v-deo.html
For you rockers out there, check out drum duo between blakey and ginger baker. Yep that right ginger baker. I think he is the only rock drummer ever to perform with blakey. Ginger was known as the jazz drummer trapped in a rock drummers body. ua-cam.com/video/qghrsBfSbgk/v-deo.html Thankx for the lesson Quincy🙏🏻

Wait a minute, “it’s not fair-it’s NOT Fair”! That’s my favorite line when watching Art Blakey!! Lol. He was so incredible.

I agree with everything you said 100% Ray!
I love Golson. How perfectly shaped that chair was for Wayne, both the horn and the pen, after Benny had it.
Art Blakey :D

Benny Golson & Lee Morgan - wow!!!
Oh wow! Lucky you!!
Great reaction video on Blakey! Big thanks! That’s cool you got to record with Benny, what an honor.
Blakey’s phrasing is so musical. His quarter note triplet cymbal bombs always feel so good to play when the groove gets cooking too. 💣 💣 💣
Hey quincy, that art blakey is anything but flakey, whoooooooweeeee!!!!!!!!!!.
Art and Elvin were so cool.
The coolest!!

That’s nice you mention and thank your listeners. Your a great drummer sans the ego!

Art Blakey is top 3 for me
Understandable!
Love this tune by Dizzy an Bird. The Jazz Messengers rocked it.

Absolutely bloody glorious! Makes me smile and feel good - thank you Q!😎
I never noticed how thin his cymbal stands are. love it! they look so light!
That’s true!
This is my favorite Jazz Messengers lineup, and this is one of my favorite Blakey UA-cam clips. I think he actually knocks one of the cymbals down near the end.😁
He does and it’s fantastic…and hilarious 😂
Great video. Thank you, he is one of mine favorite drummers.
Mine too!
Love AB- thanks Q!
My pleasure! AB is the bomb!
Just started following today and I’ve watched every reaction video. Incredibly inspiring content. I could watch these reaction videos all day. Why pay for lessons when I get watch this?!
Welcome aboard Aaron!
Great pronounciation!! 😊 Art Blakey is great. Looking forward to Roy Haines.
I guess I got lucky:)
Kit Kat is my fav too.
I mean, are there even any other candy bars?? Lol
Honestly, I don't know how to place him in the ranking of drummers (too much geniuses), but I'm absolutely fan of his music
Ok going for my green tea this morning and checking out your wisdom on the master Mr. Blakey - thank you for another video
My green tea drinking twin:)
Hey Quincy, it was great seeing you perform at Capilano University and at Frankies!!
🙏🏾
What a great music/video break today! I love the Messengers and Blakey is such a standout in so many ways. Thanks for this reaction and your insights.

My pleasure Laurent!

A great drummer who talking about great drummers is very informative and relevant ( I’m not sure of my English)
Excusé moi .
Such a awesome you))) thanks much!!
My pleasure IIlya!
Question not related to this. Can you give a lesson on effective ways to play loud styles quietly while keeping the feel and sound?
Thanks ahead of time and for all the great content and lessons!!
I'm mostly speaking of rock funk/ dance music Christian etc
one of the things i've wondered about is what do drummer like Art Blakey or Max Roach--insert anybody's name---do when they are no longer young and
can't do the things they used to when they were in their peak years. How do they compensate?
They, like all great artists, live in the TODAY rather than the past.
@@drumqtips what if the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak? i asked a serious question but you just blew me off.
I thought I did answer your question, no? Work with what you have today, which will be different than what you had yesterday.
I"m a bit perplexed by his left hand... is he switching back and forth between matched and traditional?
Yes. Switching back and forth was and is so uncommon actually.
He is the Man...surprised that tom mount holds up...heavy hitter

Tony said he got the 🔥 idea from Art .
Oh wow! I I didn’t know he said that. Thanks for sharing Jeff.

“Prepare yourself for a lot of drums” 😂
Gotta let ‘em know🤣🤣🤣
Art Blakey might be the most powerful Jazz drummer. He’s definitely up there.
Absolutely!
So so cool.. Love art blakey and yes, he probably is the most powerful drummer of all time!
Blakey = 💪🏾
