- Live in Sweden, February or March 1980.
Bobby Osborne - mandolin
Sonny Osborne - banjo
Paul Brewster - guitar
Jimmy D. Brock - bass
From a VHS tape with realy bad quality, the guy that "panic" recorded it from TV had inserted the first available tape he found and there is probably some material missing in the begining of the show.
Part 4
As I was the tour bus driver for these people I attended the Jarla Theater this aftrenoon too. Recorded by the swedish television. It was a wonderful experience to be with them for a few days.
I’m sorry to hear about the loss of Bobby Osborne, last week. My favorite Bluegrass singer. Korea veteran. A great human being. Pure class. ❤Rest in peace.
Fell in love with the Osborne Brothers at 10 years old. I'm 50 now and love them even more. Thanks a million times for posting these videos.
Never hear enough of these two. They are so real. Busy, but never struck up. The singing the Harmony 🌟
Sonny is such a warm and happy person. I would like to send them my appreciation for their music before they die, but don't know how to do it. Love them.
KevinBorgOfDeath Bobby and Sonny are still alive, Bobby is 86 & Sonny is 79. Brilliant harmonising, one of their best songs is Kentucky.
It doesn't matter who wrote the tune. The Osborne Brothers owns it, no one can sing it like they can!!
This is such a better version of this song than John Denver. So much more soul and meaning in this redition. The Osborne Bros. are an incredible Country Music band. I'm not a big Country music fan, but I could listen to this all day long.
a interesting fact about this song is it wasn't originally about "West Virginia" it was about "Western Massachusetts" and the pioneer valley, it was written by a dude named Bill Danoff who was from Springfield Mass. Berkshire mountains was Replaced with blue ridge, just as the Connecticut River was replaced by Shenandoah. its a good thing its was changed in the end because If it had stayed about Western Mass I doubt the Osborne's would have covered it.
LOVVVVVE THIS!!!!!!
it's funny to watch Sonny look at Bobby it's like he never gets tired of hearing him sing.
THEE SINGLE BEST -Version of this song I have ever heard, To Date. - Just leave it to the MASTERS, if there EVER Where [Was] ANY.
Agree. To his credit, John Denver wrote a great song, but Bobby and Sonny really "made it theirs".
Love how much the Swedes loved them lol. Bluegrass comes from Scotch/ Irish folk music, which shares influence with Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon traditional.
Love the Osborne Brothers
Everyone has a bad day but Sonny perfects the banjo anyway he wants he is a master banjo player period!!
Well said a great place to live..
I don’t know, but I like their version of this song way better!! Rest in peace, Bobby and Sonny!!
The best!
That are a very good sing and a like them l miss them
Happy birthday bobby Osbourne
❤❤
John Denver version lacks soul thank goodness i found this!!!
Super song
Happy Birthday John Denver 31.12.1943 !
Me too jayphill16! Wayne Co. I am sure I can trace back close to that far or at the least late 1700's early 1800's. Home! :)
Bluegrass at its finest
#Raker127 I saw it said that it was given to John Denver by his manager/agent before Johnny Cash could get a hold of it. Or these guys too.
John Denver, Bill and Taffy Danoff wrote it.
such a moving song if you are sentimental, as i am...
You just want to sing along ^^
Stranger to Blue Water? Say it's not so ... "Life is older than the Trees, younger than the Mountains, blowing like a Breeze!" Ha ha, and the Appalachians sprung up well before the Ordovician when they smashed into little ol' North America, It's so true. Better than Denver's version because of the far-away-eyes tempo, nostalgicker by far.
I am from the Seattle area actually but my mother's side comes from Arkansas
Sonny on banjo!
hey man which kind of moonshine you talking about! The kind that puts you on you on your back looking at the moonshine or the kind that guides your way to the back holler to the moonshineLOL!!!
@CTN1995 I think he did it just for fun you had to know how he was back then. He was a big "cut-up" and liked to laugh.
Lol, he just make a mistake. :) I likeed Sonny's pork chops of the 70's better than the beard, LOL. Love this band. Oh Ruby...wow.
@ilovechugs It's not really a banjo tune. I doubt Sonny would have a had any trouble.
"life is old there" not "older" :) still a good version :)
....West Virginia....Oklahoma. LOL
Bluegrass at its best.
Not bad, the phrasing's pretty square. Best version of this song was actually from Toots and the Maytals.
John Denver wrote it
@jayphill16 ahahahah
The Shanandoah mountains are
NOT in West Virginia!
+Rand Tenor If you listen closely it's says 'Shanandoah River', part of it is in West Virginia.
Rand Tenor The Shenandoah River is what's mentioned. Ask Harper's Ferry where that is.
Song doesn't say Shanandoa mountains,
Love Sonny, but he detracted from the song in both style and loudness on this one. Playing too loud and what he played doesn't go with the tone of the song. And just to clarify, I'm a HUGE Osborne Brothers fan.
adamaj I think it complimented the song
The bass player needs an upright instead of the electric hard hitting sound he has. Sound sucks.
