Hi Tom as someone who runs a beef unit finishing 1500 head a year best advice I could give is to put in a weigh bridge for lorries can weigh in a load of cattle or feed. buy all your feed in bulk mix your own ration. Don’t stick to 1 factory always have options. And buy the cattle yourself don’t use dealers. put in a handling system that can be used by 1 person
Excellent advice!! Listen to this man Tom!
100% correct
Tom,thats the way to go. The time and money saving..
Spot on advice just one other thing I would add is that you need to be flexible with what you buy, you can make a profit on cows heifers bulls or bullocks and they don’t have to be beautiful either, buy healthy stock and have a cut off weight below which you will not go . Truthfully we have ( I was going to say probably but I have the figures here in front of me and I am definite) made more from cull dairy cows than any other cattle we have feed , the only drawback with them is that you have a lower density stocking rate in the shed, however to counter this they only need to be fattened not grown so they turn pretty quickly. I would also add that if you are just going to finish cattle you need to remember that protein drives growth and is your most expensive ingredient in your ration. Best of luck with the enterprise however a word of warning, the balance between profit and loss is razor thin at this game and if you make too many mistakes you are going to be losing money and you are not going to make money all the time even if you do everything right. Another important point is that the profit on a beast is calculated on the value of the animal that leaves minus its cost of production and the cost of its replacement, what the beast cost is relevant only to the margin for the animal that went before it. Best of luck.
Very good advice

The cow in the pond made me smile
As a beef farmer, it really has to be said that this won’t be a profitable exercise. It sounds more like a business man looking for a hobby in farming. Beef farming is very volatile as everyone well knows but farming 550 beef cattle that aren’t the best bred won’t even pay for that new shed. It will be a great watch my only reservation is the slightly unrealistic side of starting this venture. An Irish beef finisher.
Facts . Was thinking the same thing . Surely the PREMS know the margin isn’t there and have staked the deal to cover their asses 🙏🏼
Hi Tom, think about how you can arrange the shed layout to be able to offload animals from the delivery wagon, steam clean the cattle box out, and refill with the animals ready to go off. looking for any chance to use a return/back load could save a fortune on your annual haulage costs unless of course you are selling your fit animals ex-farm gate.
You are dead right about slurry being thicker under beef stock. One little tip, run a pipe from the downpipes on the new shed to the under slat tanks. With a diverter valve on the down pipe you can let rain water into the tank if needed for mixing purposes.
Track everything, Tom. If you are too busy for this, hire someone to do the tracking for you. It means the difference between success and failure. 🎉 All the best
Hey Tom.
I'm a 33 nearly 34 year old beef cattle Farmer from West Germany. NRW.
I've started in 2013 my Beef cattles an now I got 220 and building a shed for the next 180 to get up to 400. Also I'm building a Silage Plate. Here we don't do clamps like yours.
I'm feeding Stock from 4-5 up to 18+20 month. The biggest amount of Them is Pedigree Holstein. Some crosses with Angus, Belgian and Fleckvieh.
All my Bulls are on Straw. In Germany we get Money from the EU for feeding Beefers on Straw.
If I can give you one good Tip.
Don't do Wholecrop.
Maize is the Goal for feeding Beefers.
Some good Barley Straw for structure, nice wet Gras Silage. Maize and Cake.
I'm feeding 40% of Gras in the TMR. Here the most Farmers feedding nearly 100% Maize. If you're able to get raw milled Maize, you must add 1 kg per head to the diet. The Bulls are flashing on from the dry Maize. It's unbelivable.
Fingers crossed, you're Project will BE Up in short time.
And hey, please buy a vertical Mixer. There so much better for Beef and Maize in the TMR.
Good luck
Tom,
Just a quick one on the grazing piece. I don’t think 4 paddocks is enough. I would try split each of your 4 paddocks in half again (even just with a reel and pigtail posts). Aim to graze each paddock in 3-4 days, and regrow it in 3 weeks (weather dependent!). With 8 paddocks you now have a 24-25 day rotation and newer fresher grass coming to the stock all the time which will really help with growth rates! If growth flys on, take out a paddock and bale it. If it’s lagging a bit, either put in some supplement (concentrate or a bale in a round feeder) and just try to maintain rotation length.
Just my opinion, but hope it’s some help!
Chris
Advice. Handling. Make it easy, make it safe. Automate weighing and recording including feed to enable accurate figures. Guess work is no good.
Good lord Tom! No wonder you’ve been exhausted lately! Congratulations
Busy fool 🤔 😢
Tom bit of advice don’t use the pillar system in the under ground tank. I know you are saying that you are installing an air bubbling system . But if the slurry in the tank gets to thick and you need to agitate the tank with a slurry mixer the pillars will disrupt the flow of slurry and make mixing the tank a lot more difficult use a concrete wall instead which are short at both ends creating a channel which makes the slurry flow much easier and leaves the tank easier to agitate have plenty of experience dealing with these tanks. Best of luck with the new adventure and keep up the good work👍🏻
It warms my heart to see a farmer thriving and expanding rather than selling up and giving up as some have had to do.
This is fantastic news Tom!
Tom please review this question on the Sunday vid.
When does one stop expanding? What’s the goal? can it turn into an endless treadmill?
Good luck with everything 😊
I asked myself that when we just bought 2 extra cows 🤣
When everything is running smoothly, thats when you stop. Nothing needs to expand infinitely.
a lot over here expanded to the limit in dairy over the last few years .........some are very much regretting it now .......they have very little extra in their pockets after all the extra work and stress that goes with all the extra stock ........
Tim as a American feedlot owner a couple thing is have scales for trucks for when you buy in bulk handling system that can be done by one person and get the cattle yourself or have a trusted cattle buyer and have multiple places that you can send cattle to and not just send to the same buyer
trusted cattle buyer is a very very hard to come by ............
You should consider getting one self propelled mixer/feeder and use it for both places, the home farm and the rented farm. This way you wouldn't need a second mixer, tractor and shear grab, you could safe a lot of time by not having to switch machines all the time and your clamp would always be nice and tidy. Many farms (250+ animals) here in Germany are doing it this way and have great success with it.
I've yet to see a partnership not end it tears
'Watch this space' 🤔 😢
I like the idea of the handling yard, have plenty of space around the crush for a desk and laptop, even have a work bench sink area for medicines and alike .Have a drafting gate, possibly a four way one, for the different weights and conditions. Also have a dedicated area for loading the cattle onto trucks. have the pens the same size as the compartment on the trucks, so you can load a batch at a time, saves a bit of stress for the cattle.
10:50 that cow swimming 😂😂😂😂
I’m not a fan of a slatted shed I’m a strong believer in cattle should have ample of fresh straw everyday ! Be wary of grazing with British blues they will melt if the weather turns for worst , definitely go for a LELY Juno for pushing up feed . Have you thought about buying in calves and having them on a milk machine feeder ? I really hope it works out for you I love seeing people’s success
I agree with you!
Congratulations, Tom! You’ve worked incredibly hard over the past five or six years since your channel took off, and you’ve grown right along with it. Who would have thought that the BBC would be asking you for an interview on their morning show? By taking the reins at the farm and expanding the business thoughtfully, you’ve shown your father that the family legacy is in good hands.
RFID eartags with a reader on the scales to automatically record the weight that feeds into your cattle manager system
Tom, my suggestion for the weighing of cattle would be to reach out to a Mettler Toledo dealer and see if they would be able do ear tags with rfid that is specific to the single cow. So when you weigh it, it will upload to a spreadsheet to easily track gain and loss. This way it’ll speed up the process. Because time is money.
Sorry to sound like a downer, but if it went south, do you lose your rented shed and ground.
But dont think that way
Oh my... Visions of days of TB testing, dancing in my head!
We did beef for many years before moving over to more store cattle. Couple things watch the blue steers for fat they can need a lot of feed to get them fat enough. Second, check that the slaughterhouse doesn't have a weight limit. Where we sold would pay you for anything over a certain weight! I believe it was 420kg ish dead weight. Best of luck and hope all goes well
top tip, dont put the feed bin in the silage pit lol, seriously best of luck with the new venture, an amazing opportunity, love crawfords weighing system
Top Tips :
1/ Never trust a Cattle Dealer (weld on mart prices )
2/ Never trust a Paddy
(a)Freisans not
Commercial
(b) 230kg not 380kg
Need I say More 😠 😡
In New Zealand, store cattle are brought and sold by the kg, so the livestock truck will empty weigh at the nearest convenient weigh bridge to the farm then go load up and travel back to weigh bridge to weigh again and then the farmer will pay per kg that arrives the fairest way to do it I reckon
This is crazy if you really think about it. Hope all your dreams and wishes come true.
Brilliant to hear this Tom.. I’d advise go an buy your own instead of a middle man/woman and don’t stick to the one factory.. shop around and get the best price each week.. Look at Simmental stock as they’re always cheaper through the ring but weigh like lead when hung up!
Congratulations Tom and team
Fantastic expansion, look forward to the building progress and stock expand. Are warings going to put the building up, has eternit put their experience into the building design.
Well done Tom bet Ginger is proud of your expansion
This is what farmers are having Todo these days as they don't make enough so they have to evolve and grow. I'm really happy to see you enjoying your journey tom. I love how you do alot of research on what your doing. It would also be really interesting to see you do a few different feeding options aswell !! Maybe different breeds also.. tom I love to watch your videos brother!!
You're a brave man Tom hope it all goes well
Brilliant! Share farming, the way to move forward! Happy for you & yours 😉😁
Your growing as a man and a farmer Tom. Be proud if yourself
Very best of luck with the new venture. Just don't get carried away by your enthusiasm that we love you for.😊
This is so exciting!! Love seeing all the cows running in the fields. This is such a great enterprise! Can't wait to see how it proceeds.
👀🙄🐾👍A Te Pari set up like Craford has are bad to beat fully auto crush for weighing and drafting I can say that's the best money I have ever spent
Good evening Tom and Dad. It is great to hear about your new project that you are going for the next 5 years after watching all your videos from the start and meeting yourself and your dad at the farm. I don't think it will take you 5 years to build it up. And you deserve it all, especially with all the hours and hard work you do. All the best in it
Incredible oppurtunity mate! All the best with it! Looking forward to seeing it all happen!
Tom once again you make me PROUD! You are such a hard worker! But, remember you have a wife and a young son enjoy them❤️
Thank you ☺️
As Tilly is aging and all animals pay their way, you might consider, due to her extraordinary gentle nature, training her as a saddle oxen for kiddie rides. All it would take is conditioning her to halter and a pony saddle with a very long girth. The child would not direct her as she would be led by an adult. This would afford her a delay in having to go “off the farm.” Her title would be Emeritus Ambassador for the Pemberton Farm Shop Youth Outreach. It would counter those who would emphasize the terminal reality of the purpose of livestock on a farm. W hen not on duty she would be content with the dry cows.
BTW, We always found old cows to have quite tasty loins in Illinois. The fat was a rich buttery gold.
I am as excited as you Tom well done all involved!!! Keep pushing
Fantastic news for you Tom congratulations on your new venture. Im sure Andrew is so proud of how you are growing the family business and for Harvey's future too. You have an excellent team with Luke and girls and new partners sound fantastic people. Really looking forward to watching the exciting developments. 💜
Just when I try to imagine what else you can be into … here it is! I bet it is so very exciting! Your dad must be over the moon to see how what he has worked on has expanded!
I'd, say his wife isn't
That is a lot of new and exciting stuff to manage, sir. Well done on keeping that all under wraps for as long as you have. I'm the sort that blurts out the present I got someone as they are opening the package, so color me highly impressed!!!
Hi Tom you got great plans, I love more cattle here on my small farm. I got to get the grass right here, and please note I not put any fertilizer on my the farm.
I am still getting good grass, but I no I can do better.
I have a good muck spreader now for spreading, so the future looks good but has to start with the grass, and as your dad says it all about feeding the worms and grass.
Been following you from the beginning I do wish you the very best because you deserve it Tom and families xx
Absolutely buzzing for you and the team. I will enjoy following this new project.
The belgian blues are nice. But you really need to give them some power food. Used to have them here (i am from belguim) We switched to limousin because they are a lot less maintenance. They care less about what you feed them and will do fine on the pasture with some aditional feed. Totally different charakters.
With the blues you can do whatever. While limousines are smarter and spook easy. Alway be carefull with them.
Also a nice breed to look at is blonde d'aquitaine they are related to the limousines. And get really big in the hight axis. Making them heavier then they look.
True. My neighbour has Limousines. We're in Portugal in the Alentejo and it's very hot and bone dry here. All they are eating is standing hay and thriving.
I remember saying 2 years ago on comments that Tom needs to get into the Dry aged beef markets delivered UK wide. I look forward to getting a 4kg 32 Day Dry Aged Fore Rib Of Beef from his farm shop for 2026 New years dinner. Looking forward to seeing the farm shop expand to handle this side of the business. Congrats on the new venture
I can see you are excited about this but can’t help thinking WHY. I have toured a few of these big fattening units and from what I can see the bigger you are the lower the profit per animal. Sounds a huge extra commitment when you have a good expanding business without this. There’s a lot of people chasing those 350 / 400kg store cattle
Should you put up a grain store instead of a bin, buy your straights and mix with the diet feeder. You have to take advantage of every economy of scale if you're going the route of fattening a large number of cattle, it's a tight margin business
keep those cattle out off the pond, fence around it and make a small drinking access with a gravel skirt.
check Greg Judy for his pond set up for cattle.
Alright Tom! I know you are rightfully excited! I have one question and just how vital the question is depends on your answer! Just which “it” do Girls do better? I can think of just a handful, and only a “few” of those relate to a farm/dairy life! All the best to you and your entire crew!
Good luck with the new venture!! Oh I like the swimming pool you put in for the cattle 😂👍👍
you prove time and time again that the sky is truly the limit from watching your videos from years past to now!! congrats to you and the team on this awesome new project best of luck!
The different breeds of cattle are beautiful. Love the blues. I'm happy you've got this opportunity. Wishing you all the best! Remember, family time and sleep are important too. 💗💜💙🐄🐂
This Tom guy must have very deep pockets a million will hardly get ye going
👍the last couple videos have been great!
The music, the cows oh sorry the cattle…
and
Congratulations Tom on building the Farm bigger and bigger you have a great team of people to work with.
BeWell and StaySafe ✌️
Morning Tom. That’s so exciting. Can’t wait to see it unfold.
Go hard if you're continuing to put this much hard work you'll be up big couse your hard work has brought you here and it will bring you a long way the reward will come love from Germany
Did anyone notice the black cow next to the brown one look up at Tom when he said this is are beef stock, ( Beef stock, what do you mean Beef stock,) 😳.
Personally think be better less numbers in beef stock and more self sourcing with the time
I'm constantly surprised at the infrastructure and machinery that Tom has acquired and has at his command. It's not long that dairy farmers were going out of business, complaining the price of milk was less than the cost of production. The change in the farm has been profound in the past couple of years. Fingers crossed you have a good accountant Tom.
That’s what I was thinking, Seems as if moneys no object to him, I’m not hating on the guy I wish him well, But he’s not working for himself he’s working for the bank, I’m a dairy farmer to, I hope he’s not bitting off more than he can chew.
I think the UA-cam money has a lot to do with things
Exciting times Tom. A bit like for the parlour, it would be interesting to see how other farms handle large beef heards and see if you can take any tips feom them?!?
I grew up on a dairy farm and we had some beef animals too. My step brother raises Angus with a bit of Bison blood in them in South Berewick, Maine and the beef is absolutely amazing.
I wonder if dry bed sheds are better than slatted sheds. If you look at farm yard manure vs slurry there is way more worms in fym and worms = free drainage. Also the cost of building a dry bed shed is significantly lower. Slatted sheds must be unhealthier aswell because of gasses rising from underneath them from bubblers working. I haven’t done the maths on the running cost of both but I’d imagine trying to bed down that massive shed would be fair high but the money saved in building and drainage from free worms might equal things out. Love the videos and excited to see your videos to come 👍
epic business plan Tom, people don't realize IT'S A BUSINESS, We recently purchased the neighbors 40k acres and now run 1000 head of Angus and our Bison on other acreage. Keep it up mate, the future is bright if you can keep the government out of your business...vet bills, equipment and fuel, time, man hours, fencing, feed, weather, vehicles, livestock, all the fun costs and risks
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now Tom, it’s fantastic to see the progress and changes you’ve made. Your work ethic is seriously admirable. Congratulations on all the success professionally and personally, long may it continue.
Very brave move given the current governments ideas. Look forward to watching 👍
This is a positive step for the farm although this part is a shared agreement its still expanding and bringing in extra income for your future plans
Hi Tom, With the TB about do you have a guarantee procedure in place? Love your vids very interesting. Keeps me smiling, thank you.
Happy for you and your family tom. Liking it 🚜👍
Just when I had thought u were gonna slow down lol u are ramping back up with another project so excited to follow u on another project very excited hope all is well Tom
Congrats Tom and everyone on your future plans and developments. I so look forward to being with you all as you move forward on this adventure. Wonderful video Tom, beautiful drone footage! To think not many years ago we were watching videos of you crashing your drone! Lol. You’ve went and grown up on us Tom and you’ve become an incredible farmer and business man! Best of wishes to you all!❤❤
Good to see the senior red head out and about! Once a farmer always a farmer!
Great to hear hear you talking about welfare with these ones as well!! It is one of the many things I love about you, they are not treated “like money” but actual animals and things to be looked after well. Looking forward to seeing how it all goes.
The biggest tip I can give you Tom, is to keep doing what you do 👍
I'd watch for ground water getting into ur tanks given how wet the area is. Fair play for taking on the extra work.
Hi Tom, You need an auto ID and a shedding system built-in. Plan for an easy life as beef cattle don't always play ball when sorting them out. There are a lot of good apps out there. Some work better with each other ( be careful all work together )
Totally agree with old saying lines can be rubbed out easier than walls knocked down
Best of luck with all
Hi Tom.
I've been following you for quite a while now and have enjoyed watching your farm grow. I was involved in dairy and beef stock from leaving school right through to retirement. I enjoyed every aspect of it, it's up to you how you farm and manage cattle, but i would never have housed my animals shut in a shed in the Summer, ankle deep in slurry, especially in the bedding area. It's not good for their health and wellbeing. Anyway, as i said it's up to you how you farm.
They are bedded on sawdust at the moment. Looks dark but there are dry
@@TomPembertonFarmLife yes, some shots are of them on sawdust, but I've also seen shots of really dirty bedding. I've been doing cattle as long as your Dad so I can tell what is sawdust and what is dirty wet bedding. I know you do bed up ,because I've watched you, but maybe not as often as could be. I'm not trying to cause trouble, I just feel I'm speaking up for the animals. My bug bear over the years, was always dirty bedding.
Great to see you continually pushing on. God luck with the new venture and take on all the advice that is relevant to you.👌👌
Tom as a South African who has grown up around beef cattle farming, if you can try get some brangus cattle, red angus brahman cross, very hardy cattle but fast growing usualy get to around 800-900 kg in avout 16-18 months with good meet and very easy to handle.
Excellent plans Tom. Detail your follow through and keep those detailed on thd plan. Looking firward to these plans coming to fruition.
look forward to seeing update videos on this
With ur new shed tom it might be handy to have a small gate going into each pen as well as a feeding barriers just Incase u need to take one animal out of a pen Incase it's sick or injury
Tom, can’t wait to see the whole thing come’s together from start to finish.
Tom, you planning to change the name of your dairy farm? It’s awesome that your neighbor sold or gave you his land and cattle to be partner’s that it what you call good neighbor and close friend to combined both farms together and keep it as a farm not housing.
Go for it Tom - you have a great chnace to get right first time on the new shed - as they say; measure twice, cut once. Good luck!
Tom How about showing how your milk is processed when it leaves the farm. I used to drive a milk truck hauling the milk to a creamery for process in Pennsylvania.
Compared to Irish stock they look very plain, Is it better breeding or better grass?
Wow! Go Tom, Go!!! And the rest of the crew as well. Continued success.
Great stuff Tom and what a great opportunity, the only air of caution I would say is make sure your diary cows and farm shop and most of all your family don’t suffer because of all the extra work and I don’t want to be negative just please be strong and look after your own first and foremost . Good luck 🍻
Wow that's totally brilliant, what an amazing man you are, do you ever stop working, best wishes to you all Rich W Ely UK 🇬🇧
Very exciting developments and hopefully a mutually beneficial one for all parties. I can see how you are all prepared to make the investments required to achieve your goals. Intriguing what the mystery recent acquisition is. Hopefully you can be like the stage artist and keep all the various plates spinning without too many smash ups. As an older man I have to just admire your drive and determination.
I got really excited when you mentioned going into beef. I woundered if you was going down the suckler route.
Some of those beef short horn heifers and Angus heifers would make lovely cows.
Pembertons tame and keeping a closed herd
Looks like things are going along nicely, sure there are a lot of changes. From when I first started watching your videos good luck Tom, .
One thing is if you are feeding the beef right the slurry in the tank will be like rocket fuel, completely agree with another guy saying buy all the different feed in bulk and mix yourself
Hi Tom. Always liked the way you ran the dairy operations.. IE cow's come first and have the grass etc. you are now into factory farming. Just looking at volumes £ state of the sheds (which I know cattle can be okay in) is an indicator. IE cutting costs on bedding. Just keep true to your beliefs
