    Just watched the channel "Woman in the woods" and she brought up your channel and instantly had to check things out and didn't take long to subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Great stuff , I love anything outdoors, fishing, hunting, hiking , cooking anything outdoors gets my attention LOL. Just realized this video is two years old so I have some catching up to do LOL, hope you have a great week.

    This looked like an excellent solo fall hot tent trip! Gotta admit I'd be a bit nervous about the bears myself. Do you carry bear spray Martin? I totally agree with your camp etiquette too. Thanks for bringing us, I always learn a few things from your videos. 👍

    • @PineMartyn
      @PineMartyn  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Mark! It was a good trip, though the hike in and out was hard on the legs because of all the hills, but that was the only hardship and it would have been halved had I had a partner to go with.
      I always wear a bear spray cannister on my belt in the backcountry (you can see it dangling from my belt). I also carry bear bangers and a pen launcher in a breast pocket if I needed to scare a bear away from camp or from my food bag from a safe distance. At this time of year, the bears are very active, foraging hard, so I'm particularly careful about keeping a clean camp. The only cooking I did in my tent was boiling water for coffee. The rest of my cooking was done under my tarp over a campfire, well away from my tent. Pots and pans and anything else that would have a strong smell of food is stored with my food overnight, well away from camp in a bearproof sack, tied securely to a tree.
      I'm glad you pick up a tip here or there when watching. I appreciate the comments and questions.
      Keep up with your videos. It's good stuff.
      Cheers,
      - Martin

    Nice video and nice camp-out. Just going to set up my 5 man arctic bell tent soon as well before the snow does fly, just makes set up so much easier. Yes lots of bears up this way in Thunder Bay and full hunting season also in full swing. But also to be fair we also wear hunter orange even when outdoors in hunting season. So wear solid hunter orange clothing (a minimum of 2,580 square centimetres (400 square inches) above the waist and visible from all sides) and a hunter orange cap. This will also protect everyone.Cheers Fred

    Looks great, Martin! Last year I purchased a winter tent and wood stove and I haven't been able to use it yet, mainly because I live in a condo complex and I can't really "test" my kit at home before going out. That and the pandemic thing! Moving shortly to a rural property where I will have ample space to test all my gear at will. Can't wait to burn in the stove! I look forward to doing outings like this. Wise advice on calling out on approach. I think I would have been both scared and pissed off to see a gun out my door without warning.

    Hey Martin, looking good brother. I have been there before on a camping trip with my brother before. A group of 4 hunters walked in our camp 2-3 feet away from my hammock. Un anounced and without manners. It made for a very tense moment. Turns out they were just lost and needed help. They got it and went on their way.

    Great video and great PSA. The hunter really should have said something if he saw the tent. If he didn’t see the tent he probably wouldn’t see any grouse….. 😜

    • @PineMartyn
      @PineMartyn  3 роки тому

      Haha. He saw the tent, of course. He just wanted to check it out, assuming someone had setup a camp and vacated it. The mistake was in assuming that no one was there, and that he could just enter someone's camp without announcing himself, whether it was vacant or not.

    Greetings! Fully agree that people, especially armed, being in the forest, should avoid dangerous situations. Many cases are known when misfortune occurs because of such a relationship. Who either kill or wound out of a gun as a result of misunderstanding. That is why it is not recommended to use camouflage clothing. Hunters can confuse the traveler with animals and shoot in the bushes, where he saves. Bad will be all. One wounded, and those who shot can go to jail. Therefore, clothes should be bright. I want to note that nature shown in your video is almost identical to the nature of the middle strip of Russia. Bears here too, although they are not so much in the central region. Within a radius of 150 km from Moscow, it is almost impossible to meet. It happens extremely rare. But there are many boars. There are lynx, wolf, beavers. Products We try to protect against mice and boars - this is the main threat in these places.

    • @PineMartyn
      @PineMartyn  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. We certainly do have similar forests, it seems, including the wildlife you describe, though here boars are not native, but some boars have accidentally been released into the area and are now propagating and creating problems.
      All the best to you,

      @@PineMartyn The problem of introduced species exists in our country too. For example, Canadian Beaver settled. I do not know who and why he brought him here, probably expected to keep them in captivity. But they broke free. Unlike the local species of beaver, these beavers multiply much faster. Many forest rivers are overplicated by dams that build beavers. As a result, large spaces are flooded and impassable swamps arise in the place of forests. Despite the fact that the beavers are considered edible and they are sometimes prepared, few people are engaged in the control of the number of beavers. They are catching with the help of loops and other traps sometimes, but almost never shoot. A few years ago, early spring, the group of hunters and fishermen met me during a hike. They gave me all the fish about 10 kg. Since they caught the beaver and they were going to cook it. It happened 180 km from Moscow to the east in the natural region of Meshchera. The head of the false pro-government television channel RUSSIA Today is also known for recognized in the use of beaver meat.

    Strange that someone would come up on an active camp site and not announce themselves. It is hunting season after all. I hope your hike in wasn't too far. That is dedication to pack in a canvas tent and stove, then turn around a go back for a second load.

    • @PineMartyn
      @PineMartyn  3 роки тому

      As he explained it, he saw my camp in the distance, didn't see anyone around (I was inside the tent), and he assumed that someone had just established a camp and left it there intending to return some other day.
      The hike in was deliberately short, as I knew I'd have to hike the distance three times (in with the first load, back to the car, in with the second load) just to get to a spot where I wanted to camp. Still, it was worth it. Had I had someone with me, it could easily have been done in one trip and I could have hiked in much farther. Next time I might choose flatter terrain though. lol
