    You're expected to ride at the same standard on an A2 test as the A (full) test the only difference is that you do the A2 on a less powerful bike.
    I can't think of any situation you would use more than 48 bhp on the test.
    A2 should automatically upgrade to the full licence after a year or two.

      The whole system falls apart when you can pass your A2 and not even sit on a bike for 2 years and then go and sit your full unrestricted test, in no way shape or form a better rider. I understand what they are trying with the category’s but the execution is poor

      It annoys me that I have been driving for 5 years (I know that this is not very long compared to many people), completed my C1 which was 3 days of driving tuition and passed a blue light driving course for work (9-5 Monday to Friday over 4 weeks) yet I can only get the A2 licence because I am 22. Yet somebody who is a couple of years older with no experience what so ever can just do the DAS course and jump on whatever bike they like. Agreed A2 is more than enough power even for heavier bikes that are restricted. It just sucks that its yet another test to do to get to full A Licence. The most fun you can have on bikes is when you have lower bhp that way you can ride them properly and enjoy the roads without doing stupid speeds. Worst thing about most 1000+cc bikes is having to constantly keep your throttle down since 1mm twist is difference between 70 and 100 in almost any gear.

    I still love my 125 Varadero but a thousand miles in and I am already considering a big bore conversion. I am however too green to have anything bigger yet because I am still occasionally an inept danger to myself! Part of me (the diesel driver part mainly) does struggle with cruising at 9k revs😳😬😑. I love the 100mpg though as it makes going out for an entirely pointless evening drive guilt free! As a teenager on an SS50 the height of my ambition was a 250 superdream and I still reckoned it is enough for cruising.
    Incidentally, I am really loving the camaraderie of the bike community with all the nods and waves! Proper heartwarming!

      Old comment, but this week I rode to Berlin and back on my CB500F, and it was fine on the Autobahn. I got up to 116mph, and was happily sitting in the overtaking lane most of the time. Just had to move in occasionally when something faster approached from behind. Not going to lie though, I've had the bike three weeks and am absolutely itching for more power.

    I’ve been riding nearly 20 years, my last bike was a Ducati 749, lovely bike and plenty fast enough but I just felt it was too much for todays roads, I changed it last year for a Ktm rc390, it’s much more fun, quick enough to get past most cars, I think bravado comes into it with bikers, got to have the biggest, baddest, latest bikes, a2 bikes are more than enough for me 👍🏻

  • @SlotCar2021
    @SlotCar2021 3 роки тому +3

    I tried a 390 duke and I can say these A2 bikes are great. When I passed my test it was still 33bhp for 2 years. I got a GSX 600 f and that was super fun as it makes all the power up top in the rev range or you could plod along. I never felt the need to have more power. The problem is as you feel more comfortable with power you want more and more and a lot of people don't have the skill to match a 1000cc. With 125's and smaller bikes you can ride them on the limit which in my opinion is more fun. I no longer ride after a crash but have good memories and I constantly battle with the idea of getting back on.

    • @Ohmz27
      @Ohmz27 5 років тому

      I got myA2 right after they changed the laws on the 2 year auto unrestriction xD. But yeah makes more sense to do a progression test moving from A to A2, instead of Mod1 & Mod2 again. The main thing that'll probably be different is the handling and power delivery. Mod1 on it's own should show you're competent enough, so Mod2 sholdn't be needed.

    @LazarkGaming 5 років тому +1

    I think the restriction would be better at 60HP, still far away from a 220HP super sport, but enough where it's more comfortable long distance. The whole point of it, is to stop younger drivers from accessing crazy powerful bikes, yet young people who have the money can still buy a Lamborghini on a standard car license. But back to bikes, You still get idiot riders who do a fast track DAS in 3 days, buy a 1000cc and ride like an idiot. I think the age factor is less of a thing, maybe allow 21+ year olds to take a full license.

    Before doing my A2 I was considering just waiting until I'm 24 and doing my A license but all my friends were selling their 125's and going for their tests so I thought I might as well. At first I was like well this is going to suck having a restrictor on a bigger bike but tbh it's more than enough power for me after being on a 125 for 4 years straight. Every time I go out my bike always makes me smile, has enough power to overtake, sit at legal speed limits without the bike sounding like a dying cat 😂 just everything about it makes it worth it, sure it's a pain having to do the same test once you move onto your A license but I personally think it's worth it. In a way I agree with the A2 because it's basically getting you use to the power and working your way up instead of just jumping straight on a bike that you probably cant even handle yet. So yeah the A2 is actually more than enough really, I'm happy with it.

    I ride out in Norfolk. Everything here is connected by a roads and are spread out. There are no speed cameras on the a roads out here, so people often go 80+.
    Me on my heavy lexmoto can barely go 55 for long times.
    All I need is the ability to get to 70 mph which is why I say that maybe not cbt, but definitely mod 1 should allow 250cc
    I have my theory test in 5 hours, and then if I pass I’ve got to fork up £600 for a2 training, not including the fees for the exams.
    Mods should be automatic age and experience progression without exams, or optional examinations for getting onto larger cc earlier

    I think people worry about 48hp being a little amount because they're constantly comparing A2 bikes to R1s and so forth. In my opinion why do you need a bike or car that does more then 100mph? 80/90mph is enough for a safe overtake on the motorway.

    I've been on a restricted license for almost 4 years now (partially because lessons here in Israel cost quite a bit and I'm in school), and have been riding an old GS500 for about 3 years and over 50K KM.
    Honestly the only issues I have is that it's a bit cramped for my size (1.88m/6ft2), and chugs oil at high speeds because it's air cooled. Other than that? Enough power for everything I need, and I love the fact you can ride it to the redline on winding roads and still be in control of the bike, and not be scared every time you open the throttle a bit too much.
    Took a CBR650 for a spin and that thing just felt so relaxed going 130 kph in 4th...man, how fast do you need to push this thing to have fun? In the city it feels like you're not utilizing a quarter of what the bike has to offer, going maybe to 2nd...and that bike has like 90 bhp, can't imagine what 150 bhp must feel like.

    As somebody in the US, A2 sounds like it's enough, 50hp is enough. The sportster 883 (one of HD's best selling bikes) only makes about 50hp, and people ride those all over the US, which is much more spread out and hwy intensive than the UK, and they do it without issues. A guy at my previous job put 125k on his 883. So yeah, they are definitely enough. They're not "get yourself in lots of trouble" kind of power, but they're enough power to keep up with traffic FOR SURE and enough to have fun with in the canyons and what-not.

      Most A2 Bikes if you really care about being a speed freak so much will squash the standard in speed and agility. Problem is no matter how powerful the bike is the Laws of the road stay the same and Traffic still exists. Iv'e seen a few wanna be racer boys wreck 1000cc bikes because they cared only about speed and thought it would help them on the traffic packed roads. I would Say ride into your own ability with the bike powerful and Licence. But full A class bikes do not thrive well in the modern day traffic.
      Don't get me wrong the government's retest for a full licence is just to scam money out of people, because if it really was just about safety they would just offer a cheaper course where for a day or two even a week you are taught about the A class and how to handle it kind of like a CBT lesson but for the biggest bikes. But instead they want to charge you twice for two tests each with the chance of failure.
      People who moan they can't go fast enough on there A2 bikes annoy me sometimes because you have to wonder why they want that speed, i mean the speed limit is 70 and A2 hit that fairly easily plus extra for overtaking and evasive manoeuvres. Most people who moan about the A2 only seem to care about Speed i tend to found which as i said troubles me.

    People always want more. Grass is greener and such. I have a YBR125 which cruises at 40-60mph, depending wind direction and incline/decline. I always say "wish I had something that would cruise at 80, i'd be set" but I know that like everyone else the honeymoon period will wear off and I'll seek something more powerful. Happened a month after I got my scooter and then shortly after I upgraded to the YBR.
    My resolution? Just be happy with what you've got, life is a lot better with the bike you got than without one.

    I couldn't agree with you more, you're very sensible.
    I'm an older guy and only did the A1 in 2016.
    I started doing part time Deliveroo in 2018, year or to later I added Uber and JE.
    I've ridden 80,000 + miles over a primavera and SH125i.
    Few weeks ago I did my A2 cause I didn't want to redo the theory test and the rules didn't allow me to go to A, which I think is pathetic.
    The examiner said I ride really well.
    I'd like to be a part time bike courier which I think would still require an A licence, even though I think the CB500x or a limited NC750x would do a great job.
    I think A2 to A should be an automatic upgrade based on riding experience.
    This has been discussed, perhaps you should consider starting a petition.
    If your subs sign and you get other channels involved it could happen.

      I've got an 26 year old K1100LT, having 100hp. It's perfect. I guess most of the time I'm using less than half of the power it's still got.
      I've also got an 600cc Bandit, not an A2 bike but can easily be restricted, for its price bucket it's got Ferrari beating power and 0-60 stats, and it can get me from 0 to "you're banned for a year" speeds within 20 seconds or less.
      I've also got an XTZ660, which is max 48hp, and it can go anywhere, its power is exactly where you want it to be.

    To answer this properly...
    No an A2 bike is not enough and can’t possibly be...let me explain.
    Now try to understand I’m not knocking them if that’s your choice, but these are my thoughts..
    The vast majority of motorcyclists these day ride for pleasure rather than because they have to (yes for some it’s their only transport...but for the majority it’s pleasure)
    Now for the majority of those...(this is gonna get confusing) it’s not just a pleasure, it’s an absolute passion, it’s a drug it’s the be all and end all, it’s what you live for...it consumes you.
    And when you have that passion the equivalent of a Ford Fiesta is not going to cut it....A2 bikes are built to a budget...it’s not like the old days when you got the absolute best available shoe horned into a 400 (NC30) they have lower spec components and perform at the mediocre range of the spectrum...you say they are quick enough. Yes compared to Fiesta or Corsa...but In the bike world they are slooooooooow.
    Now it’s not all about speed it’s about what you want out of bikes..if it’s pure hedonism you want it’s maybe a 90’s 2t 250...if it’s raw torque and earth shattering rumble maybe a Harley or Triumph Rocket, if you want to climb mountains a Super Ten or a GS or a KTM, if you wanna throw yourself high I to the air a full on MX bike
    If you wanna revel in nostalgia any one of the retro rides available.
    And if you want the most sublime handling and amazing power delivery and pure involvement of a bike then it’s anyone of the sports reps available (which will absolutely positively and completely shit on an A2 bike)
    Now before you say it’s not all about speed ..a Honda Grom or a C90 or a Vespa has more soul in its wheel nuts than a cbr500 has in its entirety.
    So to recap.. yes an A2 bike does the Job it’s enough to get you buy.
    Much in the same way a pair of beige Corduroy trousers and comfy cardigan well get you through the day...
    But if you want something that is truly gonna set your pubes on fire then you have to find what your passion is and revel in it and not just accept something that is “enough to do the job”

    Here's a question. How many people with A licences ride A2 bikes? It's all about ego really. In the same way people buy mobile phones,TVs,(you name it), that have features they don't actually need because they feel compelled to buy the best tech they can (just about) afford. Now we are fast approaching the situation where most bikes have bigger engines than most cars! And yes I have a 1000 +cc bike, so I'm a sad f- -k too!

    I spend most of my time enjoying the countryside and on narrow lanes, and have comfortably done 200 miles in the day on my 125. At times a bit more power would be good, but anything with a bigger displacement isn't really going to do much for me personally, and i can live with my 60mph tops on bigger roads, so i suppose it's' horses for courses, but would generally agree that no matter what your scenario, the performance of A2 bikes covers the majority of needs, but ATM we have choice, so if you want a big bike and have the money, why not? we don't yet quite live in a society where the government dictates what we can and can't ride, at least not until they have the power to limit our electricity and rip the petrol pump outta our cold dead fingers.

  • @Drunken_Hamster
    @Drunken_Hamster 5 років тому

    I think the A1 and A2 and all that are not well thought out. It's either an outright displacement restriction, or an arbitrary HP restriction. HP means just about nothing. It torque over time. It's that torque that will get you into trouble. And, also, the heavier a bike, the more torque and power it needs to get it to do the same thing a lighter bike will do. Therefore, for BOTH A1 and A2, it should be some form of torque to weight ratio. Probably something like a 400lb curb weight bike can only make 30 lb-ft of torque for A2.

    A2 is good enough on urban roads, you miss the extra power on the freeway once you go beyond 130-140 km/h (80-90 mph) compared to faster cars. Everyone should start on A2 just to learn how to ride.

I don't want to be that guy but i would even say Full A class bikes are to powerful for the modern day roads and traffic, there really only functional for long open roads like the USA highway or Autobahn In Germany. and the track days. there to powerful for Every day UK travel a shame but well the same could be said for the powerful sports cars.

    The main difference between A2 and A IMO is your ability to overtake and haul yourself out of bad situations. Obvious A2 is worse at those things. If that doesn't matter and you'll be happy to sit behind slow traffic at times then A2 is totally fine. It's funny, the restrictions are to make riders safer, and yeah it stops a new rider putting a litre bike in a wall, but A1 and to an extent A2 bikes are just naturally less safe than unrestricted bikes. They have lesser ability to avoid dangers, and A1 bikes are affected by adverse weather far more.

However if your say riding a lot with a pillion or touring with camping kit then no I would say it may not be enough. Its doable as many have proved but It’s nice to have to bit more on tap if your fully laden. Personally I find 650cc enough for me. My last four bikes have been 650’s. I’ve ridden more powerful bikes but I prefer 650’s. They have enough power for overtaking while two up or fully laden.

But that all depends on the quality of the bigger bike you try. There’s a fair few duds out there in the big bike category. But yes A2 in terms of power is probably just about enough. But A2 in terms of quality of bike and stability then no it’s not. Personally I say around 100bhp is the ideal power for a road bike but that’s because my bike is 120bhp and I can’t imagine why you would want much less. As I said it’s what you get used to.

(basically stops full throttle) these days the brains of the engine the ECU is reprogrammed to only procure the allowed power. The bike will be tested and issued with a bit of paper to say its A2 legal now. The benefit to this is later down the road if you get your full licence you can get it unrestricted again and have the full power.

    I haven’t restricted it but I feel restricting it makes it feel like a target to max it out.
    Not restricting it, I respect it a hell of a lot more.

    Does anyone know anything about the KTM RC 390? Because I've heard it has problems stalling at low revs.

      I bet that is because it's a big single. Most people who come from sport bikes and ride my DRZ 440 also stall it a few times. Just have to get the feel for it.
