What is it about these videos that are so enthralling? I've watched six in a row for god's sake.
They're 'nice'.
Welcome to the club
His smooth buttery voice and the interesting food items in the mres are what do it for me, Steve is the best, embrace it

Funny catchphrases and genuine enthusiasm for what he is doing. You can watch anybody do anything when you can tell they have a passion for it.
As a Norwegian, I'm glad you liked our millitary food.

As a Finnish I'm glad, that they had chocolate bar that was made in Finland in it. Really didn't expect that.

I am just as happy as you are. Fellow Norwegian. Always good quality in Norway. Norge er sååååå best!
You put way too little water in the stew. It is supposed to be 3-4 times more water and be more of a soup. If you dont put in more water and eat this for 1 week straight you will not shit for 1 week. Litteraly

I was in Helsinki in a 100+ year old "all you can eat" place and they served buffet style reindeer, mash, pickle. That was one of the best experiences in my life, freezing and snow outside and fresh reindeer food inside. Nordics are on another level with their home style cooking.

@@McSlobo Tbh, compared to the crap fazer puts out, i'll take brunbergs chocolate any day, just a personal preference.
Reindeer has the consistency of a really good veal, the taste is somewhat akin to beef, but with a bit "deeper" flavor. The rich flavors work really well with those lingonberries etc. Anything that has a bit acidity to balance the richness of the reindeer !
I love white-tail deer meat, so good.

Those Protein bars with toffee is a life saver lmao, I used to trade cigarettes for those cause I really loved them.
nick shirley Nice attitude :-) Go be a douchebag somewhere else.
Odens lol
They looked so good! I love toffee and really want one now
I think the reason for the high quality food is cause they don't have dozens of millions of troops. (and cause they are one of the richest countries in the world shh)
Yeah, it's amazing how nice our troops could be treated when they aren't used as chess pawns.
Real, who makes these packs, also produces these same packs for the civilian market. So they have to make them edible :) In fact, all of these ingredients are commercial goods available on the civilian market. Except the protein bars. So I' d guess that's how they can keep the prices down.
I got one of these real freeze dried packages on a forest fire excersise. had been up for 24 hours, with just two slices of bread to eat so far. That was the best meal I have ever had! Pasta bolognese. I wolfed that down so fast! Fell a sleep with the package still in hand.
I still sometimes by these packs as dinner, because they're so good!
Been trying to get a hold of an old Norwegian 24 hour ration from the 1950's for you to review. they are so cool! I had one in 1995, and the cookies still held up :)
That's why skyrim belongs to the Nords
The U.S. only has 1.3 million active duty personnel

Look at that it looks amazing
"Rudolph with your nose so bright, won't you be out on my tray tonight?"
Oh, and that red thing in the stew? That wasn't a lingonberry. That was Rudolf's nose.

I never mixed Cocoa with Coffee when i was in the Norwegian army all the way up in the North back in 2010-2011 🇧🇻 I drank Coffee in the morning and Cocoa for lunch and had Coffee later when we had break. what we do when were out in the field, we put a spoonfull (the white spoon) of butter or margarine in after we have poured in water, then stir. the difference it makes is just amazing!

My dad gained like 10 kg when he was stationed at the Russian border in the late 70s. He told me he used to eat a lot of MRE because it was so good even back then. That stew pack you got in that MRE is a nice brand. You can buy just the stew packs, in several different flavours, at different sporting goods stores. I usually buy the one you reviewed since its so good.

I’m having a REAL Reindeer game casserole as I’m typing this. I recently moved houses and found an old ration in a cardboard box. Manufactured in 2015, best before June 2020. Absolutely no problem with taste, smell, texture etc. Tasty👍🏻 I guess ‘old’ is relevant😄 For Steve I imagine 2015 is brand new😃
does anyone think mislabeling the contents and actually the mre containing more than expected is planned? like for a moral boost, that's kinda what I'm thinking
thats such a good idea, i think your on to something.
could be but then wouldn't soldiers catch on? wouldn't they start to expect something extra?
it would spoil the boys, for sure.
It sure gave me a boost out in the field. And it was really common to get some extra snacks like those protein bars or some chili nuts :)
It's a lot more common than you'd expect, but not common enough to be on purpose. The thing is - a lot of times the "extra" you'd get wasn't an extra, it just replaced something else; what's worse is what you got was a lot of times worse than what you should have gotten.
As a norwegian i have never seen nor heard of anyone putting koko on their coffee
ReflexNor it's a mocha coffee,
Pretty sure when he was saying that's how Scandinavians do it, he meant the coffee with no sugar or creamer/milk.
Jeg drikker det nesten hver eneste morgen. Aner ikke hvordan du ikke har hørt om det.
ReflexNor it's known as mocha in England.
Yeah as another norwegian. I have never met anyone else doing this
no idea why i watch your videos but i do for some reason.
The reason why you like his videos is because its relaxing for you. The crackles of the boxes and cans is relaxing it is similar to ASMR and you perceive it subconciously, its the same with Bob Ross shows thats where ASMR originates from. And its kind of interesting aswell
+Can Turkleton lol you must be one of those ASMR freaks

Calling someone a freak yet watching something as unique as ration videos. Genius!
I went to Norway last summer. Such a beautiful country :D Since it was summer the sun was still up at 11pm haha. Watching this remind me of my experiences in Noway somehow lol.
Ohh... We use creamer and milk, but usually darker roasts than what's common in other countries. Also, you should try that Regia hot chocolate on it's own, it is really good. Norway has probably some of the best if not the best chocolate in my totally biased opinion.
As a fat American, I agree.
Yeah but drink a lot of straight up black coffee as well.
Eirik Hoel Høiseth I drink coffee black, all the people that goto Starbucks probably never drank coffee in their life they just want a sugar drink..
Its more like all the good chocolate producers sell their stuff in Norway since its so rich, other countries do all the work, Norway just gets the chocolate
@hill Billy Starbucks drinks are a dessert that just so happens to have a bit of caffeine inside them
I'm strangely at peace and happy watching you review this meal. I need a Norwegian MRE in my life
Hey Steve :)
Just a little sidenote i think you might find funny. As norwegians are adept at the english language, the word "Real" is kind of a pun on the english word, and the norwegian word real, that translates to "proper".
+Steve1989 MREinfo if I were to have to eat a ration it'd be a Norwegian one for sure, definitely better then ours seemingly.
NICE HISS. (pun) Also thanks for the FYI
It's refreshing to hear somebody that's not so picky with frivolous things with these MRE packs. Made me wanna buy some!

Exactly what I'm doing...
I have also on 3 occasions received an extra protein/snack/meat bar from these rations(newer ones from 2020-2022, so maybe adding extra components is a thing they do to hopefully sometimes boost morale?

is this a Norwegian MRE review or a Roast on US MREs?
Both!

Except that hideous Chinese one which only contained drinks and energybars.
Now I feel the sudden urge to buy at least 5.
Same lol

Brian Johansen LOL!
This is one of the first times I've really wanted a mre
The way you describe food makes me so hungry lol
The main meal here is produced by a commercial outdoors meal producer, and they are available to buy in sports goods stores, only difference is that the wrapping is orange. Some of the meals are really really good.
When I was in the army, they hadn't done the green packaging yet, so we were dealt orange Spaghetti Bolognese, Cod Stew etc. We were having good dinners every day in the field. In fact, better than in camp.
You're enthusiasm astounds me! Amazing!
I love this guy's reviews. He is so enthusiastic, its awesome. He would chow down on a dog turd in gravy and have something great to say about it. Keep it up, Steve!

Gotta love the Scandinavians, they just do everything so well
@Mauri Mela word
They're almost too good.
@Mauri Mela Yea, norway took in a whooping 18 000 immigrants in 2019. Country must be overrun by now!!
Einar Ingvarion And?
Einar Ingvarion oh, the sweet sweet ignorance of the narrow mind
you know the food is from 2016 when the meal has a link to their instagram on it.
Man it's not even the subjects that you're talking about are that interesting, YOU'RE the one that's so interesting. I could listen to someone talk about anything they're passionate about for hours. You rock!
i've had that exact meal while on duke of edinburgh. bought it at a mountain sports shop in germany. it is a commercially available pre-packaged meal that they've just bought and put in their mre. saves them time and effort to outsource many of the things in them from civilian stores. and yes, it really did taste awesome :D best thing i had with me, other than an instant strawberry cheesecake which i ate dry (it was better that way)
Drytech is the parent company of REAL and was started in 1989 in Norway. The MRE's are composed of both products that they make themselves and outsourced products that are packaged in REAL branded packaging, and some that aren't in REAL branded packaging.
REAL, or Drytech more accurately, is the official supplier of MREs to the Norwegian army and have been for 2 decades now I think and they also supply products to 20 other countries.
They commercially sell the single freeze-dried meals and their energy bars, the MRE packs that you can sometimes find in stores are surplus quantity and not made to be commercially sold originally, only if surplus exists.
This is oddly one of the most satisfying videos on UA-cam.
I'll never understand why we must put food coloring in everything!
Maybe it's to mask the color of the water that you used? That artificial green color would help you forget that you used muddy puddle water.
Perhaps. Would that cover it up?
I mostly meant the USA in general, but that's an interesting point regarding MREs
Food coloring is added to make the food brighter and more appealing to the eye. The food tends to lose color when it's preprocessed and looks generally unappetizing. It's most prevalent in candies and food aimed at children since kids are drawn to bright colors.
Population control
Because some scientist got it in his mind that flavor is second to appearance, and then failed to provide either.
if anyone haven't mentioned it already.. If you look at the bottom of the main dish pack there is some marks showing that the bottom can be pulled apart, making the pack stand upright and making stirring a lot easier. It's is really hard to pull apart, so a knife comes in handy. try it next time, just do it before you open the top.. Some years ago 3 of these real mre's where nested and was 3500 calories. The standard store-bought main dish rations are the same price as other freeze dried backpacking food. adventure food, trekneat, mountain horse etc, here in norway that is.
I never thought I'd see the day I fall in love to a channel that dies reviews on old mre's xD I wanna try one but don't wanna spend the money on one.
Not sure why this video is back in my feed, but I’ll watch it again. Also. “I’ll never understand it.” When he was talking about the food coloring in US MREs, well he did figure it out. Took until 2021, but he did figure it out
I like how the chocolate goes so far as to announce that it is indeed real and not some unknown material.
look at my 'info' to steve, but its a kind of pun on the english word "real", and the norwegian word "real", that translates to "proper" :)

I came back here after Simple History quoted Steve1989's review...
I really like this guys voice, and the way he says things.
"mm oh yeah, good quality, thats like heaven" xD
Lingonberry and reindeer... You know although this is quite exotic, I would feel it's weird if Norwegian won't put these in their food...
Lingonberry and Reindeer are very Scandinavian foods so it's probably more ordinary over there.
yeah I mean, if someone is supposed to do something really unusual (to be him), if he doesn't do that, you will feel that's not correct. But if he really did, although it is something really weird, you will feel finally everything is correct.
I don't personally care for the stuff but some like having their reindeer or moose a bit of lingonberry jelly or jam, not unusual around these parts.
Yeah at resturants if you order food .. it often have a spoon or two with lingonberries at the plate, like meatballs .. often have lingonberries with it, reindeermeat often have it.
I don't like it but people here where I live .. pick lingonberries, cloudberries and blueberries alot .. some many kilos each year, and some even pick crowberries and make juice out of it ... I remember my grandmother used to make the best juice from it.

You forgot to eat the gum
+Steve1989 MREinfo haha, thats what i thought :)
Steve1989 MREinfo game is deer
that is Nordic dental hygiene for you. The gum is there pretty much purely for dental health. With near certainty it's 100% Xylitol gum to stop acid attack (on the teeth) after the meal.
Figured out by research in Finland in 1970's and ever since offering Xylitol gum after meal is a standard practice all around Nordic countries. Many people carry a bag of those gums daily. Many cafeteria places etc. include a gum in the lunch price and it is also bit of a modern "do you need light" tradition in Nordics. If group of people are eating together and leaving, usually one person has a pack of gums with them, takes them out, takes one and then offers everyone also a gum. With high probability everyone else also has gum bag with them anyway, but it is a common courtesy gesture here among people.
Usually comes with at least all Nordic country rations. Dirt cheap (since xylitol gum is mass produced and the most common sold gum in Nordics) and keeps soldiers tiny bit healthier, specially since soldiers probably on field exercise won't have time/facilities wash their teeth so often.
Am i the only person that loves hearing him say "nice!" At the near beginning of all his videos? 😂
