The best and one of the sweetest love story I’ve ever heard in my life! The man has 7 children and widower... and the woman a nun-to-be. The impossible becomes the possible.

***** I actually prefer to watch movies in their original language with subtitles. I find movies with English voiceovers offputting in the way the dialogue doesn't match up to the mouths moving. Though I wish someone would put subtitles for the sequel to this movie so I could see it

I'm a great fan of SOM. 10yrs gap between old and new version. But this version has more natural acting, singing and more details.. 1965 version has more modern musical ,beautiful landscape and the beautiful chemistry between Julia and Chris...Both version are very nice in their way. But finding this 1956 version is like finding 💎

When this came up, I expected very little and was just as blown away by its quality as you were. It's a beautiful little film with fine acting and, as we all know, a wonderful story.

Hi. Just click the captions button on the bottom right of the UA-cam screen. If in the mobile app, tap the video, then click the three dots in the top right and "captions" will be one of the options. Select "english."

Captain Von Trapp was 25 years older than Maria. He died in 1947(aged 67) Maria died in 1987 (aged 82).We stayed at the Trapp Family Lodge(in Vermont) in the early 1970's and met many of the family, including Maria!

I had an opportunity to interact with a Maria von Trapp, except that she said she was the youngest daughter of the senior Maria. She was promoting music CDs of the siblings - this was in the early 90s.

I'm completely distracted by the fact that at around 4:29, middle of the line of children, one girl's elbow meets the chin of the boy next to her. Smack! And he just keeps going with acting, what a trooper.

Btw, thanks for the upload! I've never seen the musical film (I feel like I'm a rarity in the UK) but was asked to find a clip to show my students in English class. In doing so I stumbled across this and found it so compelling I ended up watching the whole thing! The subs are great, especially some small extra culture notes (like the "cut-up flag" being another name for the Swastika), as I know ZERO German, language or culture. I think watching it in German was much more powerful and authentic than what I assume the musical remake to be like.
The US immigration man with an American accent whilst speaking German was incredible!
      Thanks again~ :)

  • @erpollock

I like this German-Austrian version much better than the musical Sound of Music. It is more realistic. They eliminate the teenage girl who is a subplot and unnecessary. And the actress who plays Maria convinces me she could have once had a vocation as a nun. Julie Andrews did not convince me of that. Of course, the songs of S of M are wonderful, but the acting in this film outdoes the Sound of Music in my opinion.

    • @lordbyron3603

I agree 1000 percent. This version with the acting and actors was more believable. I enjoyed it immensely without all that Hollywood glitter added on. The singing was outstanding. I’ve never heard this kind of singing before. They sounded like angels singing.

I can't help but think that the subplot in The Sound of Music was "invented" to make it a bit more a movie of its own, otherwise it would be much more obvious that it was a copy of this one.

Edit at 5:16 =Never mind... Just the pattern arrangement, but the cut is better... I still love it...
Edit at 7:32 =Now looking at the shot, I understand why it works and I'm in love with it!!!

Not in all European cultures, but in the German and Austrian for sure. They also wear the wedding band on the left hand when they are engaged.
The band of greenery is also part of the older rituals. It signified that the bride was a virgin. My great aunt had a child before marrying the father and my great grandmother would not allow her to wear the band of greenery.

In most countries in Europe, the wedding rings are worn on the left hand during their engagement, and carried into church on a silver tray,The rings are then put on the right hand ring fingers during the wedding ceremony.Sweden and Denmark ( but not Norway) have engagement rings like the British and Americans, and wedding rings are worn on the left hand ring finger. In Denmark both bride and bridegroom are given wedding rings and this is becoming more common in Britain.I think Germany ,Austria and the Netherlands wear rings on their right ring finger ,but I don't know about France
