Man...I miss the old Singapore. I was 5 years old in 1991. And I never miss the opportunity to look out of the train window whenever I boarded the MRT train, encouraged by my Dad who is a SMRT Train control station staff since 1987.
It's been 22 years since I moved from Singapore at 9 years old. I remember exactly the smell you're talking about. I can even remember the smell of the taxis then! I swear they all used the same air freshener, and had those beaded seat covers for the drivers!
Great video! Thanks for sharing!! from what i can gather.. 0:01 - 0:37 view of Redhill MRT Station from Blk 77 0:38 - 1:10 after emerging from underground tunnel 1:11 - 1:16 stop at Redhill MRT Station 1:17 - 2:43 from Redhill MRT Station to Stirling Road (roughly where Queens condomenium stands now) 2:44 - 3:46 from Queenstown MRT Station to Tanglin Primary School (where New Town Primary School stands now) 4:09 - 5:22 from Clementi MRT Station to Sungei Ulu Pandan
Singapore does change alot. 20 years ago, things bearly looked the same. Nowadays, there are more high-rise apartment blocks that can be as tall as 40 storeys and also more malls/developments around the section of the route (Redhill - Clementi)
Back then it looks so airy and not so congested with people and vehicle. It was simply beautiful. I really miss those days. Now, it's so stress ful just to going out just for a walk.
Agree, I miss the feelings of space growing up, and trees that give me shade from the afternoon sun. All a distant memory now. Our country is so suffocating now and Nea mostly plants small saplings and cut down the large trees.
@DMZahrinBeyRecorder As I recall it, I filmed from where the train left the tunnel and was going to Jurong East, although I did not film the entire journey. Hope this helps, Simon
is been over 20 years, The shophouses around Axendera Road have been demolised and turn into the aparment then the area around String road, String Walk and commweath Avenue has turned into Queens Aparment.
cant get enough of these videos... thanks for allowing us to go through those good days again. those days, it's a luxury to own a camcorder. i better start recording some for my kids soon.
When LKY was still the SG PM.....life was good and simple. Inside MRT train was calm with extra-much breathing space and room for your broad shoulders to move around. :-(
LKY is the Supreme Leader of SG of all time. There"a no question about it.He is still guiding SG 's development in spirit and all the ministers are a ray of Sri KKY Sir 🙏🙏🙏
So much green and less crowded SG. I can still briefly remember how Clementi looked like back in 2001 when i first came to SG, not too much different from the video. Missed it.....
It was journey between redhill to Jurong East station. Most of the building at Queenstown & Clementi were pullled & new housing building were built. Road traffic & train were less congest as population then were 2 to 3 million
Sit apartments, shophouses and those old flats, they r really great!!! Just sad that all these r demolished in the name of development, for condominiums!!!
@kcleung100 Hello, Further to my previous reply (which I am now replacing with this message) I am sorry but all my video has now been digitised and I do not seem to have filmed the return journey. Simon
to the author of this video: do you have footage of the return journey, especially from Commonwealth station to Queenstown? I have frequented the area from young and DYING to see what it looked like back then!! PLEASE, please tell me you have footage for the return trip =)
I KNOW WHERE THIS IS TAKEN. FYI I WAS BORN IN 1998. At 4:20, the MRT is exiting the station, CLEMENTI. the blue overhead bridge is the exit for the clementi station, the grass patch beside the blue exit now has clementi mall built on it. The train was driving I think, from commonwealth? Towards jurong east, filming through the left train door if you are facing the front of the train. Thank you and I hope you will find this helpful.
Thank you so much for this precious clip. The old Queenstown is only kept alive in videos like this.

I remember the distinct smell of rubber in the old trains. As a kid, I would kneel on the seat and stare out the window for the entire journey.

10 years after this
None of the apartment blocks around redhill are still standing...
