  • A quick test of a new Vergez Blanchard skiving knife I bought recently.
This is chrome tanned lambskin, so vegtan will test the edge a little more. But 1.5m of skiving with no stropping is pretty good!

This video was quite helpful. After watching this, I excitedly tried to skive the same way. I couldn't achieve a smooth, buttery slicing motion as you, no matter how much I sharpen and strop my knife (made from Japanese blue no. 2 steel). I tried on different types of leather. Some were easier to slice through but none were as buttery as yours. Nevertheless, I still manage to learn something from this short video. Thank you!

You're welcome. Yes the technique is all in the sharpening. You can get everything technically correct, but it is still a skill that takes a lot of time to acquire. I teach an online course on sharpening, but I always recommend that students set aside more time to learn how to sharpen than the skiving itself.

Clearly this performs but the photos you see of that knife look very cheap and poorly made. Doesn't look to be so in the video. How would you rate quality? And do you feel the handle gets in the way of proper angle as opposed to something more like a flat kiridashi or something similar with no grip to prevent full flat geometry?

The quality is good to very good. Depends on your definition of quality. It's a tool so I'm only interested in the outcome and it's reliability. The handle is tapered, so unless you are into bookbinding or require very wide skives of 20mm+, then you should be able to skive on top of your stone rather than over the edge.

My main concern is longevity of the edge as well as the handle. Being not a full tang, using a ferruled design, I'm concerned it would have a loose fitment or get loose over time. I know it's not a very hard use item but for the price tag they are over other offerings I would want to make sure it's not going to come out of the handle. Ergonomics also being a concern it's good to hear you don't think the handle gets in the way
