    As someone who can't afford professional tuition on production and doesn't have much free time, I've been swimming on endless useless absurdly long tutorials and wasting my precious time.     I think James is one of the UK's best music producers, he is a fantastic person to talk with, he is a very kind humble man, his heart is there for all up and coming music producers singer songwriters and all musicians.     Great tips and feedback! What a pleasure is to hear someone knowledgeable of current software and vintage hardware as well.
    I've got a small suggestion to make: sometimes it's a bit of a struggle trying to follow your cursor in parts when you're tweaking settings all over the screen, so I'd suggest highlighting your cursor with a trail, or color, circle outline or larger size.

    First of all, huge thanks for all these valuable information, James..
    I've just checked your brilliant style guide series on point blank and wanted to find more of your stuff, which led me to F9 audio website and this channel. I have to say that I am impressed and even I am rarely commenting on youtube I had to write how excited and happy I am to find your channel, it definitely deserves to be No1 channel for tips and tricks for every producer as I found more interesting stuff here than in most of over-hyped over-marketed "hipster-appealing", "cool-looking" other producing related channels together..
    With all due respect to others but this is my first choice of valuable resources starting from today and I will check it in detail.
    Also, I am glad to find out that finally somebody who has vast knowledge in electronic music "discovered" Presonus S1 as I am also thrilled with it and in process to switch from Logic, as S1 is mostly marketed as appealing more towards "acoustic" based music production and mixing which is shame as it deserves more credit (like your channel) :) ..
    Now, regarding that side-chain style in S1 - isn't that same style of implementation like Cubase has ? I might be wrong about this, but I don't think there is any difference in implementation, except workflow, which is way faster in S1 with quick drag'n'drop? Also, it would be nice to see more S1 related-stuff from you as most of (serious) videos available online are related to non-electronic music genres and most of those are pretty basic..It would be nice to help "launching" S1 closer to the heart of electronic music producers like Logic and Cubase are, but that's mostly Presonus' job after all ..
    Anyway, thank you one more time with all these precious tips and I was wondering is there a more comprehensive masterclass of yours, possibly with start to finish song production workflow? I would be happy to pay for it and support you and I will try to spread your channel everywhere, it deserves it, just don't drop the ball, please :) !

    Hi James, thanks for all the videos. Very helpful!! Just wondering if you could go into a bit more detail regarding the sidechain feature in studio one and why and how it's better than other DAWs. Many thanks in advance.

      +tooms1sdc Studio One built their DAW at a really interesting time - All the problems the big names had faced over the last 15 years had been gradually solved ( or heavily highlighted by users) and the coding team were probably in the very fortunate position of knowing exactly what users wanted and what the App needed as teh DAW market was mature when they entered .. from what I can see whilst using S1 the entire audio engine in written with this problem solved perfectly from day one .. Meanwhile Ableton for example is still catching up from legacy engine code that rendered Midi automation out of time with on-screen representation and Pro Tools's Busses are useless for Sidechaining in anything other than the enormously expensive HD system ( although this can still cause issues on heavy sessions ) ... As every Latent plugin gets added to any part of the mixer of a DAW the entire system must compensate correctly and so far S1 is in my opinion one of the best implementations of a solution we have - Logic is Damn fine too , but still breakable on occasion ..

    Thank you James! Love all your tutorials...do you think it's possible to get the same result you got with the high pass and resonance bump in Ableton with the louder than lift off plugin?

      It's a filter with resonant/peak so it will certainly have a touch of this - the filter might be a touch shallow at 12db/Oct though so a dedicated filter might be more controllable - I've even gotten this kind of behaviour out of stock plugins ... do be aware of the phase shift that it will naturally create - It's how all filters actually work

    Very interesting on the Ozone part of the video. I was hearing low frequency loss as well as transients softened. Modern Drum & Bass productions are so loud these days they must have excessive transients and bass to compensate for the loss thats going to occur from the limiting

      +nlevelmusic I feel a whole tutorial coming on about this .. Its really complex now and if your music is heading to a club level is very important as DJ's are'nt used to using the gain controls as they had to on vinyl ..

    Hi James, i'm your fond follower. Thank you very much your tutorials. They are very detailed and thank you your suggestions. I really improve my knowledge . But how many information do you know? For years, I follow you as an artist and now as a teacher . And definitely more, you're the best prepared teacher in the Web . Before I used the plug- ins in a wrong way . Now thanks to you I found the reference point for electronic music . I study electronic music and Sound Design at the Conservatory of Florence in Italy and maybe there were lessons like these. I do not mean it's not a very good training course but these studies are oriented in a very " conservative " way , as the word says.I will not look flattering but I'm really happy to have found the answers I was looking for

      Its a Disco / Post Disco project with Guy Pratt called Atlantic - Mica Paris is singing this one ... Unfortunately it's not moving at the moment but hopefully will in the future ... The entire mainstream music industry is youth facing - only classical and Jazz face an older audience so it's hard to place some things - Even though the public don't care they just want great music . ....       I thought it was an oldskool 80s club track it was so good. That bassline on both tracks is incredible, haven't heard bass like that in decades, far too good for major record labels.

    But Poor REASON....Propellerhead is failing to push the envelope in DAW development !!! No one talks about ..REASON..only people in the REASON bubble uses REASON and talk about it. They really [Propellerhead] need to consult with F9 for some fresh Ideas.

      +ninjafukwan7 So true, and sadly, what Reasoners have been screaming for for ages, VST support, couldnt be more true today, even though they now have the RE store. Once you put your head up and look outside of the reason bubble, you realize you are being held back and in some cases, paying way to much for relatively basic plugins as well. I was blown away by the value I got in the base package of Logic Pro X, all the plugins and stuff that's included, that you would be paying many many hundreds of dollars for in Rack Extensions.
      By the way, I really like your videos F9, keep it up! :)

      +ninjafukwan7 I love Reason - the SSL desk it it is utter genius - Still my vocal time stretch algorithm of choice , but yes it does need to offer more I think . The props guys are wonderful too so I hope things will change

      +F9 Audio Agreed ! 100% I'm a REASON user. Any criticism from me is grounded in love for the Software ! I like all of the DAW out there I'm not into this is better then that ...none sense!! I want REASON the push the envelope for the sake of Pushing Audio technology..more and more ..that's all !!! \O/
      Having said I'm not blindly in love with the Software and will defend and criticize it ...And right now ..I feel like saying to Propellerheads .....STEP IT UP !!!!!

      +ninjafukwan7 Fully agree with these comments, as a Reason user myself. I'm finding myself getting more and more drawn to Logic Pro X. I really do love Reason, but i feel it need audio ReGroove quantisation, MClass gui updates. Its a shame, and i really hope Propellerhead change the game with Reason 9 (with the time its taking, i think it will be a big update).

    1) Sidechain is just as easy in Ableton 2) I don`t get what you mean by "always perfectly in time " "all other daws should watch.." what do you mean by that? that other daws are out of sync? can you please explaining a bit more? . i am very interested in knowing what you mean with the timing engine being better or something like that

      Le Frua yes sidechaining is fairly straightforward in Ableton but one source can only be sent to one destination if using 3rd party plugins - S1 allows the same source to go to multiple plugins across your production easily and without busing . Ableton is awesome ( and my daily DAW ) but it is not sample accurate in terms of clock sent to plugins or automation . Pro Tools native could not ( at the time of this video's creation ) send a kick drum via a bus to a compressor plugin in time with the track if you had a large number of plugins used on a mix ( the bus send was always latent unless you upgraded to Pro Tools HD ) .. Logic is fairly good but still not 100% when using busses for sidechaining in a busy mix and Ableton can be all over the place depending on the complexity of the mix ( always out of time if you leave 'reduced recording latency' turned on ) .. After 20 years of working with nearly every DAW i've not found any audio engine with internal delay compensation as good as Studio One ... A lot of this is just practicality - Every other system has a historical code base, compatibility and legacy to deal with - S1 is very young and I assume the designers were able to design their audio engine with the modern world in mind from the start ... if you don't believe me , grab the demo and check it out

      I see. Thank for the clarification. Am asking cause i never noticed or better said never found Live to have timing issues (am referring to mixing not to live recording and such cause i don`t do much there). At least nothing that disturbs my ears sonically or rhythmically even if it`s happening. Yes i know this issue with 3rd party plugins in Ableton but i think they are working on "freeing" it for 3rd party developers so you can route 3rd party plugins like Abletons plugins in the future from what i know. In Ableton you don`t need to group in order to go to multiple destinations. If i want to duck a synth track, a subbass track, a something track to a kick drum track i can put a ducking comp on one track-> adjust it to be ducking to the kick-> dublicate the duck-comp-effect device-> throw it on the next track i want to duck -> dublicate there -> go to the next ( It takes a few seconds for 5-6 tracks) and be done with it. So i don`t see a problem there. Btw you mean that S1 allows multiple sources to be assigned to 3rd party plugins? Also this latency you refer to applies to only when you record things or you mean like when you are working in a mixdown? By all means i never said i don`t believe you. You seem to be pretty competent. It`s just I am fairly happy with Ableton and don`t care much about some of it`s flaws cause... you always can find better i guess but ableton was what i used when going through some rough times and the fact that it was there and just worked saved me so i see it as a companion. Plus it cando way more than what i need. The biggest problem i think is organising ones own thoughts-decisions. A daw is secondary. Maybe i am too romantic...

      I'm with you 100% - this is not a DAW-face off video - those arguments are pointless as its the same as painters arguing about their brushes or sculptors discussing chisels ... This is about the technology - Every single system has flaws - I too live with Ableton's (utterly minor ) flaws because the rest of it is quite simply stunning to use.. This section of the video was put there just to highlight that S1 has this very difficult part of DAW coding nailed better than anyone else running native ( i.e .MIcroprocessor based ) DAWS .. The ultimate is Pro Tools HD but at $7K starting price that not worth discussing here ... Competition has always made DAWS better as one software house's feature leads to another's counter-innovation an so it just gets better and better - this is the reason for my "Take Note' comment - Presonus have cracked the biggest bugbear in modern DAWS and the other developers now need to follow their lead to make all our lives better . Bitwig I believe have just done so with V2 and I have no doubt that Live 10 will be the same .. Regarding the Ableton copying - yes that works perfectly but only on Live's internal plug ins - Often I want to send lead vocals to 3rd party limiters or multiband compressors on groups of Synths , Guitars, etc .. Currently in Live you have to copy the lead vocal channel to do this for each 3rd party Plugin - It's not the case in S1 , you can literally pick a channel and tell S1 exactly where you want it to be sent to ( and with multiple locations from just 1 track ) - Its the most elegant solution I've seen so far.

      With you 100% (back :-). Also this is what i meant. Ableton from what i know will at some point release the codec (or whatever it`s called-needed) in order to make it accessible to 3rd party developers. So in the near future i believe you will be able to do that in Ableton with 3rd party plugins too. DO you have any hint as to when Ableton 10 is coming? Btw yes this solution of S1 of sending this all over the place seems to be pretty elegant i admit.

      I've been into this issue lately, it becomes way to apparent in larger projects, which ends up making sense, since you tend to have your session loaded with plug-ins that introduce latency. Even native plug-ins can introduce latency, usually the ones with "lookahead" function, like the limiter.
      One of the things that shipwrecks stuff in complex projects is the "reduced latency when monitoring" on, however it's vital that you enable this if you're going to record anything, even MIDI.
      Do you have any tips to minimize this?
      Just curious, do you finish all your work in Ableton or do you bounce the stems and do the mixing with other DAW? What would be the best practice here?

    Studio One looks too cluttered which is often distracting.. in my opinion
