I've seen Hvorostovsky as Rigolette, Simon Boccanegro, in Un Ballo, and in concert. He is among our top baritones, with a stunning voice and technique; and, he can act. This clip is an excellent example of his talent.
He is almost MORE seductive when you close your eyes and just concentrate on the sound. The quality of the voice, that chest sound you can feel the reverberations. And the guy can sing for 20 seconds without taking a breath. PHWOAR!
I remember with happyness when i heard first time Dmitriy's vynil disc with this record.I was happy when i listen to his cd,and even record it on tape recorder!
there will never be another Dimitri - he was so wonderful and his early demise is not only tragic but a loss to the opera world just as Dame Joan Sutherland was. I cried when both of them died - but at least Joannie was well into her eightees whereas poor Dimi's painful death was still in the middle of his fabulous performances. I recollect him as the clear opera prize singer in the Cardiff Singer of the world when Bryn Terfel took the song prize. the battle of the baritones. Marie Miller (RIP Dimi)
So poignant to listen to this now after the dreadful news this week. R.I.P Dima, you truly had a most magnificent and beautiful gift, and I feel lucky to have had the privilege to hear you sing.
This is a true star turn. Dimitri used his breath support in a virtuosic fashion. A voice need not be enourmous to make an enourmous emotional impact. If Gabba is in the possesion of James Morris's contribution to this gala I would be very grateful, I received a phone call at that time in the broadcast and missed it Thanks for the wonderful posting!
@stevevandien I have heard him in live performances in whole opera productions with full orchestras in Vienna, Covent Garden, the Met and various other opera houses (with no mikes in any of them) and in Salzburg in the Grosses Festspielhaus which is a very big opera house and his voice is big enough. They most certainly do not use mikes except for broadcasts and videos and then you see the mikes hanging over both orchestra and singers.
THIS lady feels Dmitri is gorgeous and has a great voice. What she also feels is that men who can't express themselves on UA-cam without swearing offensively should not inflict their ignorance on others!
« Don Carlos» = one of the most striking works of the great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. The excellent performance of the aria Rodrigo Dmitri Hvorostovsky with the voice of unusual beauty = gorgeous baritone voice and a rare charm, expressiveness and rich range of tonal colors. Interesting era in which there is a power struggle, the struggle for ideals, love affair, friendship and devotion to Carlos and Rodrigo. His aria and parting words = «I'm leaving with a light soul. Happy and proud that you rescued me. Let bloom homeland with you. Carlos goodbye ... I'm doomed» = move people to tears.
I have been to several recitals and operas where Dmitri was singing and he projected just fine. I think that some on UA-cam are confusing the terms "Large" and "projection". Dmitri does have a "large" voice, but it's quality does not allow it to carry as well as someone like Bastianini, who sang with a brighter Timbre. That's not to say that Dmitri has a small voice though, it is just that his voice has different acoustical qualities.
An.Konchalovsky ritiene che l'opera cantare e suonare drammaticamente (fare) e impossibile.
Just to think, I got sick at the Toulouse Vocal Competition in 1988, just so he could win first place! Amazing how life works. He's sure an artist, but I prefer a brighter, more italianate color. But there's no denying he can sing....
There no reason that we should dislike him))) God gave him a beautiful voice,he is a very good musucian and knows how to act but as I said before there are operatic voices like Del Monaco, Siepi, Callas, Domingo ect and classicly trained but small ones like Dimitry, C.Bartoli, Netrebko etc who are making huge careers today because technology allows that.
@sopranosd Your observations are good. He started to making darker and wider sound (by forcing his throat), which is ruining his technique. I think he has very colourful voice itself, i don`t see a point doing it "more" colourful. I agree with you. F.e. his early count Almaviva is good.
I am soooo tired of this! whenever someone has a "small" voice but somehow manages to project, people always say they're miked. I remeber some "learned" persons saying the same thing of a few Fischer-Dieskau recordings here on UA-cam. Enough!!!
When was this made? He doesn't sound as good as usual... it's really pushed and dark, i'm used to a more cantabile dmitri, his high is still ridiculous, but he's never looked like he's working at all, here he does...
Miking opera is now quite popular these days(Met, Chicago, etc) they never admit it but its a reality. What more dissapointing is that they don't mike everybody so big voices actualy sound rather small in comperison to singers like Dimitry or Cecilia Bartoli. As a recording artist he's one of my favorire baritones, but don't tell me he's an opera voice, please)))
Hey gyus, for those who like Hvorostovsky I'd say he is a real classy singer but one thing is bothering me that he's pretending to be an opera singer, which he is not simply because of his small voice, yes he sounds great, I agree. I had rare possibility to hear him without mike and it was very dissapionting. As far as I know his agent would never sign a contract with the operas who don't have miking technology.
I saw him twice at the Met in NYC, both times in Trovatore, and one in Vancouver when his hair was still dark, so probably in the ‘80s. No mikes,, no need for them. His voice carried very well. And what a beautiful voice it was!

The wonderful, unique Dmitri Hvorostovsky doing his magic!

So true - we are lucky that this and recordings like it will keep his voice with us for many years.
One of my most favorite videos on UA-cam...

I love Dima

Bravoooooooooooo!!!!!!
I'm not a big fan but I must say, well done here.
Beautiful composing from Verdi here, one of my favorite passages.
Maravilloso!!!
incredibile, che fiato! XXXXX
Estupendo. Único. RIP
Excelente interpretación
Me apasiona su voz lirismo puro
Beautiful indeed and very convincing. An other way to do this aria.
The best.

R.I.P. -.-
Ay en la madre.. Que voz

nicriphone is because of the recording, you fools. Dima doesn't need a mic for singing an opera role.
@sopranosd I'm not sure about his jaw but if he is trying for a darker sound it's most likely because it's a Verdi piece.
Just to think, I got sick at the Toulouse Vocal Competition in 1988, just so he could win first place! Amazing how life works. He's sure an artist, but I prefer a brighter, more italianate color. But there's no denying he can sing....
He is a Russian Baritone. Russian have a different, perhaps heavier quality to their voices.
absolutely correct

Sin duda almusicam !
I'll keep that in mind the next time i perform these arias...

trills....yay!
LOL, thats quite a compliment.. but its really true.
Bastianini,
I dont think Netrebko has a small voice, I think it is quite full in the house,
@LaMuerteAmarilla :D

It's his real hair color. :/
YES.

I thought it was pretty funny. Relax guys.

@LaMuerteAmarilla Yuck
@AfroPoli Ah you guys don't know a beautiful man when you see one.
@LaMuerteAmarilla even much worse :-))
... don t ask :)
microphone

cesaare...you are mistaken
Dommage...
