I just love this production by Elijah Moshinsky, at the Royal Opera in London. I attended a performance with exactly this cast in 2002, and another in 2009 with Hvorostovsky (again), with Roberto Alagna and Sondra Radvanovsky. Both were superb casts. I hope I to get to see this production again some day, and hopefully with Dmitri as De Luna AGAIN please!!!

I’ve never seen such physical staging! Very thrilling, I’m into it. Impressed with how well they managed, while darting back and forth and fighting! Must have been so winded afterwards.
@@rogerpropes7129 far from being past his prime, this was performed during his golden years! He does seem to have trouble catching his breath in that run I will give you that. There could have been any number of reasons for this including conditions in the auditorium that evening or maybe over exerting in the fight! Anyway, I have the dvd of this so I watched it this evening. Afterwards I decided to look at the extra section. I learned a few things there. This was the first time Dmitri sang this role. The swords they were swinging around weigh a couple of kilos! Cura explained how hard it was for a singer to do these scenes where they fight and sing at the same time. He said that for the physical exertion you breathe at the top of your lungs and for singing you breathe from the bottom of your lungs and that it was difficult to coordinate it oftentimes. That actually perfectly describes Dmitri’s two quick breaths because, unusually for him, he didn’t draw in huge lungful of air, as he usually did . But, whatever happened, there was no need to pass any unpleasant comment (which seems to be your trademark). If you don’t like something, just scroll on by. I always think if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. It was a moment‘s blip in the whole opera where he was outstanding...and the audience agreed. Finally, as you are no doubt aware, Dmitri lost his fight with brain cancer in 2017 and is no longer with us. What you might not be aware of is he has a young family and the two youngest children come onto these videos from time to time and I don’t think it‘s a nice thing for them to read rude, personal comments about him. There are a couple of other guys who just come on with negative impolite comments too and I direct this at all of you, and wherever and on whomever you write such comments....just think, would you like your family to read what you wrote about you? If the answer is no, don’t write it.
Verdi had the uncanny ability to understand the common man's heart, and so he had the librettist to write such that the Conte is forgiven and not fatally assaulted, as if fate stopped Manrico, as any good man would forgive the dependent, but here it gets an extra spin in that it is fate that connects the two brothers and the master plot of Azucena's revenge at the end
Also, in La Traviata, I believe that the true response of "Un di felice" from Alfredo is actually responded through the aria "Ah forse lui...Sempre Libera" because it is to themselves that people answer honestly. And in reality as we see in Act II Violetta's unsure answer to herself tips to Alfredo's pursuation of "...Amor che palpito del universo intero..."
Not exactly "forgiven". In the scene with Azucena, he explains that a strange force seemed to stop him, and he heard a voice say, "non ferir". (Don't strike.) The implication at the end of the opera, after Azucena has confirmed that Manrico is di Luna's brother, is that this was a heavenly guardian sent to stop him from fratricide. Savvy theatrical effect by Verdi, who was not only a great humanist, but also a shrewd man of the theatre.
Da la impresión de que usan micrófonos muy cerca por qué se escucha la respiración intrusiva y el seseo.....cuando es una toma a distancia no se captan esos sonidos, se escucha es el timbre enriquecido por la acústica del teatro.
No. In this opera, the villain wins, both this time and at the end of the opera. But Azucena's revenge is that he has to live with the knowledge that he killed his brother. Regarding this fight, you see that Manrico pauses when he has the blade to di Luna. This gives di Luna the chance to strike and leave him for dead. In the next act, he explains to Azucena that a heavenly force stopped him from killing di Luna.
SuperDarchangel I suspect it has to do with how physical the staging is. It's remarkable, really remarkable, that they got through this trio as well as they did.

dalangie While this scene is certainly very exciting, I take issue with your use of the word "boring". Verdi's music is NEVER boring. Opera is primarily a vocal art for vocal athletes. Pavarotti and Sutherland stood still as they sang, concentrated all effort into vocal perfection flying out into the audience. Hundreds of thousands will assure you that they were NEVER boring!
