I love this! Yes. This is why I never fully expect anything until it is in my hands. Also, why I always have like 10 plans to get what I want if the first 7 or 8 don't work. My life has been a set of failures and I learned if you don't get your hopes up, failure doesn't hurt.
If something good happens, I'm happy. If nothing happens, I'm happy. If something bad happens, I'm still kinda happy. Unless someone like this is around me, then there is a problem.
1971 here & i repeatedly told my ex & his mom the same thing for years (til i finally escaped) - keep your standards high, but set your expectations low to avoid disappointment. they never heeded & were continually & forever finding themselves disappointed... meh... horse water drink yada yada... ;)
My expectations are so low that a snake has to shimmy to get under it. Seriously, having high expectations leads to disappointment, sadness, anger etc... and I just don't have the time or energy to deal with all that.
I was forced not to care, anytime i cried about anything my dad would yell at me. "WHY ARE YOU CRYING?! NOBODY'S PICKING ON YOU! KNOCK THAT SHIT OFF BEFORE I GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO CRY ABOUT"!! kind of got rid of any of my emotions and feeling for the most part. Plus he would encourage me to fight neighborhood baby boomer bullies who were all 3 yrs or more older than me. (3 yrs makes a difference when you're 7. ) by telling me if i don't fight back he was going to beat my ass worse than the bullies can do. No i don't have any resentments. Lol also ive told my kids if you keep your expectations low than you don't have far to fall.
