What has happened is irreversible, in a lot of this the beach is now completely gone. You can't have a multi-story structure right at what is now the oceans edge

Nicole was a big massive storm much like super storm sandy, but on steroids. It hit perfectly on the full moon. And high tide thrusday am was as the moon was setting. Kings tide and the high pressure to the north. All played into the perfect storm. The beach didn't get a chance to rebuild its sand bars. Much of the beach was flat. As Nicole rolled in.

People love the ocean front and I doubt it will stop them from living in these beautiful areas. Yes, it’s risky when the storms come. However, most people are aware of the inherent risks. If we can go to the moon, we should be able to build and engineer appropriate buildings to accommodate storm surges and hurricanes as Mother Nature flexes its muscles. Perhaps their will be technology someday to bust up these storms and keep them out away from Florida’s coast. In the meantime, the area is so beautiful I doubt people will stop coming to Florida coast lines. Just be ready and prepared and get the h… out while these storms come through. No more mobil homes unless they are fully insured or built to withstand hurricanes. The taxpayers should not have to pay the bills in high risk areas. I doubt insurance carriers and lenders want to take such high risks.

For me the worry is the 2 still being used nuclear reactors on on the barrier island called Hutchinson beach further down the Atlantic coast near St Lucie. How crazy is it to have that on a barrier island if a cat 1 can do damage like this? The reactors were built in 1976 and I think they are the same type as Fukushima. Unfortunately the industry is too unregulated & builders put up condo buildings as quickly as they could so they could offload that risk onto unsuspecting buyers. Now, with the insurance situation, too many will be trying to get out at once because they cannot afford the premiums. YIKES.

Just so you know...the waters edge used to be well over a football field away from these buildings even at high tide, but after these two storms the beach was eroded so badly that the waters edge is right up to them now. The day before Ian I saw a two lane driving path on the beach and there was plenty of room for beach goers. Now I don't think you can even walk it without getting wet let alone drive on it. The only thing that could fix this is if they dredge sand from the ocean and rebuild the beach with it but that will only bring the tourist back until the next big storm washes it away.

These are beautiful areas but come with major risks. If you can build density, impound sufficient reserves for ongoing reserves for sea wall maintenance perhaps you can save this real estate. If not, Mother Nature will reclaim it for herself. Great areas for engineers and building contractors. I’m sure most building and condo owners are well aware of the inherent risks when building and living in these areas. I’m assuming most of these homes are vacation homes. It’s heart breaking that people are faced with these challenges but I’m sure they were aware and/or aware now of the inherent risks along the ocean front.

Look at so many multi-floored condos with ocean slamming waves at edges at their doors now. Indeed if dunes existed before completely & permanently gone! Rebuilding anything there a huge mistake!
