It takes the strappest bravest men to climb this mountain in a group in the summer. But to do it alone in the middle of the winter is way beyond me. I'm speechless
Tears of joy and tears of pain so many emotions running through the brain. A rare breed in today’s world. Incredibly beautiful summit, inspirational to say the least. A true legend.
Imagine getting up to the top and realizing you are the only person in the world at the top of the highest mountain in North America at that exact moment. Congratulations man
Terence McGowan did you know that that mountain is the ancient marker for all builders at 6660 kilometers perimeter...so you climbed the center of our flat earth
Truly inspirational what an incredible achievement, Thank You for the view from the very top, it gives an ideal of what the life energy force is like. I felt cold watching this. I respect Mountains fully, enjoy painting Mountain scenery, not climbing Mountains, taking on the base camp is as far, it gives an amazing perspective.
Loved your book Alone at the Top!! You are an inspiration to people who love the outdoors! I read that book in a day, could not put it down :) Way to represent MN as well!
Wow! What can anyone say? Unbelievable views on top and unbelievable courage to do something like this. Only a handful of people in the World with guts like Lonnie. Majorly cool!!
An incredible achievement - well done. We had actually met, maybe 13 years ago, back when I was in college (I'm from Northern Minnesota myself). I found your explorations quite inspiring. Meeting you (and people like you) has helped motivate me to lead adventures of my own. I've lived in New Zealand now for about the last 5 years, and spend almost every weekend in the mountains. So, I must say thank you for all the inspiration over the years.
Yes indeed -Christchurch. If you are ever able to schedule it in, come on down, and I can show you around a bit. There are more mountains to climb here than can be achieved in a lifetime!
@@Tatusiek_1 that's a good question. It's a bit hard to say in a concise statement, but overall, I'd say the values between the two countries differ a fair bit.
Incredibly inspirational shot. I have probably watched this clip 300 of the 1300 times its been viewed. My climbing partner and I are preparing to make an attempt on Denali in the summer of 2017. Very stoked for the experience. Do you know the name of the song playing at the end of the video? Sounds like Eddie Vedder. Also very powerful. Thanks and safe climbing!
Thanks Adam and best of luck on your climb this coming summer. Denali is an inspiring place to be. Colter Wilson is the musician and did most of the music especially for the Cold Love film.
Just finished reading "Forever On the Mountain" (1967 Denali tragedy). Recently read "Into Thin Air." Now I'm hooked & want to start climbing. This excellent video is fuel poured on that desire. Denali, surely not, for I've yet to climb anything more than 2,667 meter Guadalupe Peak, TX. I'm seeking opinions for a beginner peak. I want to experience snow, ice, beginner technical routes, crevasses, crampons, at least one overnight high on the mountain, and I'd like to climb with an organization that'll teach me as many basic, beginner climbing techniques as possible during the climb. I'm not interested in life-threatening mountains (yet!) but I do understand the general, inherent, possibly deadly risks in climbing mountains even of "low risk." Thus far in my brief research, Rainier seems a good choice, with lots of teaching/guide services that span well the breadth of my requirements. I find it interesting that far less than half of summit attempts on Rainier make it to the top. Why? Perhaps because of the high percentage of tourist attempts? It is possible, likely even, that I will be in Darjeeling, India in 2018 (non-monsoon season) and other parts of India & Nepal. Surely, among all the peaks in the Himalaya there is one suitable for beginners such as described above? If anyone has knowledge of Himalayan peaks suitable for me I'd appreciate it. Perhaps a suggestion of an organization that caters to beginners in the Himalaya? So, I am tentatively planning Rainier this Summer unless someone suggests a more desirable peak. It would be nice to climb one that's a bit more outside the tourism box that Rainier seems to exist in. If anyone can point me to remote peaks in the Rockies that'd be appreciated, too. I am 49 years old and in good physical shape. A long-time runner who does at least one marathon annually (sometimes two) in the 3:50-3:55 range (busted 4 hours for 1st time this year!). I am currently weight/strength/core training per Mtn climbing organizations suggestions. In India/Nepal it will be possible to carve out 7-10 days devoted to climbing if, in fact, I do the trip. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.
Woah sir this is very impressive. This mountain must be cold as hell in winter as its 60°north and it must get little sunlight in winter like maybe 6 hours
Incredible footage, and amazing accomplishment, Lonnie! It was my pleasure to meet you in in GM in '14, via mutual friend, Jack Stone. Thank you for sharing the realness of this very emotional moment. Bravo!
My friends and i love to backpack up mountains. Have have done 14 miles in one day although not as steep. We want to adventure up Mount Denali when we graduate college. besides grade A equipment, what should one keep in mind when attempting Mount Denali? Any really step and windy spots to watch out for? Any high chances of avalanches in the summer months?
Anyone trying to climb this Mountain in winter would sure have to pick his window of opportunity carefully. There could be winter storms that could last for days and Arctic Air that could drop to - 60 degrees below zero. You cannot fear Death and make a plan like this where you attempt to climb alone and then in Winter. Like one comment below, this achievement leaves one speechless.
Hey Lonnie , fellow aspiring mountaineer here! . Was interested to know what kind of training you do for climbs like this and in general? , Do you do alot of running and stairclimbing in preparation? I dream to do some big ascents like this one day! Amazing video , such an inspiration.

Every time I climb a mountain I’m thankful it doesn’t have snow like this on it , you my friend are built different and I tip my hat to you

That's awesome, but I believe Vern Tejas did the first solo winter ascent back in the 80s. He guided my group to the summit in 1987 and was amazing.
Ya Vern was first to do it solo and I in January

A relatively mild -45F or there abouts.
