Out of all the different videos of comparing a Legacy and the S500, yours is the most clean and clear example of the differences. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I was looking for a comparison of these exact two guitars. I want whichever one cleans up better, which I feel the legacy does better due to the lower output pickups. But I can’t deny that the S-500 sounds excellent.
Very good, honest comparison. I bought the S500 in transparent Irish Ale red mainly because of the pickups and the push pull tone switch for more options
.
Bin absolut überzeugt von G&L + MDF-PICK-UP's
Hi Cory! I am a fan of stratocasters, I have several and different brands (fender US, Squier, Vintage, harley benton), I even make 2 stratocasters with parts bought everywhere on the internet. I have never had the opportunity to try a G & L guitar, their are excellent in what I see in your video, the wiring of the S500 is very similar to what I change on my stratocasters, except that I add a switch or an extra push-pull to have bridge and middle pickups in humbucker on positions 1 and 2 and middle and bridge in humbucker on positions 4 and 5, position 3 no sound (kill switch), this is a very easy modification to do and it allows me to play metal on a stratocaster! Thank you for your video and congratulations for the arrival of your baby!
nikkoberserker i like them so much.. my next strat will be g&l for sure. Prefer the electronics and the feel. Thanks!
Yet again you are helping me with my choice Cory and I reckon the legacy is for me. I hope you are keeping well and imagine you are crazy busy during these times. Keep well. Happy New Year ❤️👍
I was stationed at Osterholz and love North Germany.Legacy is a fine instrument more gutsy than a strat with better quality.
Love these videos. Keep em coming!
I previously owned a USA S500 and sold it due to moving cross country. I now own a ASAT Deluxe semi-hollow and a Tribute Comanche, both are excellent guitars. They are different from their Fender cousins, but with that said, I prefer the G&Ls. Your video has me now considering adding a Legacy to the family. Too bad you didn't include a Comanche in your video, they are excellent.
The close up when you said "cool" was awesome. Keep it up.
Beautiful G&L guitars. Nice two point bridge with brass block and saddles. All three PUP's at once. Cool. Bass control, unique woods (to ST), and the one with push/pull. Ability to shape sound with great detail and choices. Priced well!
Yes, these are better than Fenders or Squiers. I wonder why people still buy the old brands.
Good review, Cory! At last, a guitar that I can get cheaper in Australia!
Good stuff man! Keep up the great work.
I play a lot of different styles of music, and that S-500 on the metal tones was awesome to my ear. Thank you for this!!!!
Cool guitars and fantastic test. I own a S500 Tribute (made in Indonesia), it is a really versatile and guitar and a pleasure to play. Actually, S500 and Legacy have very different pickups. Those on the S500 are MFD pickups, as you noticed they have higher output than those on the S500, theis construction is close to that of P90 pickups. The S500 is a more aggressive strat.
Can you get "typical" strat sounds using the PTB or the volume?
@@nathanjmartin19 Hello, yes. You Just have to roll down a bit your volume knob and turn down bass knob to 3 or 4 and You get this classic "alnico5" strat sound. All the strat sounds are accessible with this guitar.
Hi Cory, can you review the G&L SuperHawk Jerry Cantrell?
I have been twice 2 Cuxhaven. I rented an apartment in Duhnen. I am pretty sure my wife wants to go back sooner or later. Where is the music shop located? Would be nice to combine a visit to the AlteLiebe and then the music shop.
Maybe you should've specified that these G&Ls are Tribute models, for those who are not so familiar with G&L. The Tribute Series is much more affordable than the US made ones, but still of very high quality. Worth every cent...
Once you start playing G&L you're converted for life. A G&L Tribute is a much higher quality instrument than a Fender Mexican made and is less expensive. They're incredibly well made and have high quality hardware and pickups.
That S-500 is the ultimate Strat IMO, the pickups sound crisp and articulate, almost piano like. The pickup configuration options are a huge plus and the mahogany body gives it a more balanced tone. The Bass and Treble bleeds are also a huge upgrade to the classic tone knobs that dont allow you to tame the brightness from the bridge pickup. The Trem on G&L is much better than the traditional Fender Trem and the saddles are nicer than the bent steel saddles. I prefer the feel of the S-500 neck. It's a little bit wider and after you take some steel wool to the back of the neck its plenty slick. The S-500 pickups sound alot better to me too. If you need the traditional twang spank and quack of a strat obviously those S-500 pickups won't get it done like the Legacy but if you're open to a more modern sounding pickup they are in a class of their own.
J G I couldn't agree with you more. Just recently traded for my first G&L. ASAT special tribute. The quality and craftsmanship on this guitar is outstanding! Pretty much my wish list of guitars has completely changed since I got this. I desperately want an S500 now. These mfd pick-ups are incredibly. The ability to equalize each string with the pick up is an incredibly powerful tool.
@@SO-bp2uc that's a hell of a good guitar! Its like part telecaster and part Les Paul Special. My dad has one and I couldn't put it down!
@@SO-bp2uc sold a $1700 Strat...very nice...but to be honest, my new $600 MFD-equipped S500 is a better sounding (and more versatile) guitar. USA had better attention to detail on build/quality...but in terms of sound, playability, trem system...I think the G&L wins....at 1/3 the cost.
No. Mim players may be so so in terms of fretwork and some of the components but the player plus models are fantastic.
Thank you for making this video, I have been deciding between these two guitars and the Comanche model for a while.
Did you pull the trigger?
I'm trying to decide between those three models as well. I have my dual humbucker and P-90 bases covered with other guitars, and would love to add a G&L S-style guitar to my collection.
@@pjl626 I decided on the Legacy, and I'm very happy with it. The slightly brighter pickups were what I was after, more of a ringing bell tone. I managed to find it for $400 USD.
nice vid. i own both. (u.s. 3 bolt models). accurate review! had a tribute legacy, excellent guitar. it was heavy, and the controls were a little lower quality, otherwise, very fine guitar.
What's the best?
Thank you so much.🙏 I think Ima have to get the s-500.
Nice! I might just get one soon
Did you have any problem keeping the guitar in tune ?
Lacquered necks are not sticky. I have two and never found flies or mosquitoes stuck on them.
Yeah, now that's funny! :)
i love them lacquered
It takes time on the epi Les Paul's but the sticky feeling goes away
Hey Cory, was the yellow one a "vintage white" finish? The pics online are tricky. Is it more yellow or more off-white in person?
Well.. yellowish off white..think Jeff Beck's guitar.. ive one..can send pictures if you want
From Leo: Very good test, The back to back sound comparison was really helpful. I agree that the G&L guitars are very good, and I find the tremolo system to be very stable. I would have no hesitation to buy another.
which pickups do the S500 come with in the neck?
Thanks for the great dem, I just orederd one with the saddle lock bridge, very impressed with your playing too
G&L s500 or vintage v6..?
Love G&L guitars, they’re have a great sound and play great, I have a legacy and a fallout.
what is best and more versatile the legacy or fallot?
@@alexgochman6654 Legacy
Hey Corey great video. What is your experience on the Legacy using the tremolo? I just bought that guitar and am finding that using it is giving me a hard time staying in tune.
Yup... That's a tremelo
G&Ls tune up nicely...hint...hint
Do either of those guitars suffer from 60 cycle hum?
they have 2...the pickups i believe are not noiseless
Happy fathers day cory
I prefer the sound of the legacy
Both G&Ls are different guitar from Fender. Legacy has basswood body in case it is not transparent finish. Bridge is similar to Fender standard strat but you cannot fix bridge by adjusting springs. Fretboard is very flat and fretwire is medium jumbo. G&L is nice guitar but if you look for some vintage strat replacement, you might be disappointed.
should be clear somewhere in the video about factory location...originals made in California, then Japanese or Indonesian factories, i believe...the nature of the beast is not the same ( i.e. somewhat or largely lost in translation
USA G&Ls are, and always have been, made in the original Fender factory in Fullerton, California.
That s 500 sounds great. It’s like a super fat strat
🤟
Please tune the Guitar. Your a Great Guitar player
Is the S500 any lighter than the Legacy? I have a mahogany Strat' which weighs 3 Kg.
both the same with 3.6 kg
G&L let you specify the timber / wood which has a massive impact on the guitars weight. My S-500 uses Alder and is reasonably heavy. For my Legacy I specified Western Sugar Pine and it is extremely lightweight.
Humm
Good job
Cory the flame neck looks like you have a lucky dip, the one I've seen was plane :-)
These are Tributes by the way.
Tune the guitar properly before doing your videos. I like the G and L tribute S500. I will get one !
I was sold on the S 500 until he mentioned the lacquer on the neck. I do not care for that
Take out all the treble= sounds like a Gibson.
the are not usa models?
how do the s500 pups take distortion?
Amazingly well 👌
Exactly the same as the American models (considering they're the exact same pickups)
G&L Guitars are the finest guitars Leo ever made.
Buy a used G&L USA, it's a way better instrument. I've been playing G&L for 40 years Los Angeles
Ugly headstock
Worst demo ever!
Best I could find. Saw it all
