Today we're learning "In the Hall of the Mountain King." This music was composed over a hundred years ago by a Norwegian composer named Edvard Grieg.
Grieg was asked to compose this as incidental music for a famous Norwegian play called Peer Gynt. Incidental music simply means music that is meant to be heard while you watch a play or movie.
In the part of the play where you hear this music, Peer Gynt, the main character of the story, dreams of traveling into a majestic cave inside a mountain where he discovers a kingdom of goblins, gnomes, and trolls. There he meets the Troll King.

Hello Ms.Hoffman I was wondering if you could play more modern pop songs. I am currently on your lesson 52. I am sorta of getting bored because they are mostly songs for younger kids old classical stuff.
I am not telling you to change I love your lessons and I have learned a lot, and I even learned how to read music. I am just hoping you make a beginner pop playlist. So if someone only made it to lesson 52 like me I could play some of my favorite songs I have heard on the radio.
+TheFreesubs12 I certainly understand what you mean. Playing familiar music is part of the fun of learning piano! I do have another bonus lesson planned for later this month that I think will fit the bill, and my future curriculum is going to have more in the way of contemporary songs than what I've posted thus far. Thanks for the suggestion.Unfortunately, some of the lyrics in the song “Havana” are not appropriate for our curriculum. Because children make up a large portion of our audience, we choose to teach only music that could be considered family friendly and appropriate for all ages. If he has other favorites that fit this standard, please let us know and we’ll be happy to add them to our list of requested songs for lessons!

This song can definitely be difficult! If you need to take it slower, feel free to pause the video to practice until you get the hang of it before moving on. Or you can change the speed of video in settings to slow it down. I've found that a good way to tackle a difficult piece of music is to practice and perfect small pieces of the song--just a few measures at a time--before you try to put them together. Play each section very slowly several times until you've mastered it, then gradually work back up to normal speed. Once you've mastered each section, you can add them together, once again starting slowly. It will definitely take some patience, but I'm confident you can do it! I hope that helps!
