Cognitive Distortions #2: FILTERING (Losing Sight of the Big Picture) | Dr. Rami Nader

  • Filtering is a cognitive distortion that we do every day. We are constantly being bombarded with all kinds of information through our senses and we cannot possibly pay attention to all of it. Therefore, filtering allows us to screen out much of the unnecessary information and only pay attention to the most important information that we are being presented with. We engage in filtering all the time and it is a normal part of life.
    However, in depression and anxiety, what can often happen is that you can start to pay attention only to the negative things in life and filter out any of the neutral or positive things. What ends up happening, as you filter out the positive and neutral information in your life, you are only left with focusing on negative things, which can drive mood down and results in even more negative filtering. We only respond emotionally to the things that we pay attention to and, if all you pay attention to is the negative, what results is feeling like life is nothing but negative, bleak and depressing.
    So, the first step in addressing the cognitive distortion of filtering is to be aware when you are engaging in filtering and recognize it when it occurs. Then, when you catch yourself filtering, you need to remember to zoom out and think about the whole picture, including all of the information that you are filtering out.

    Dr. Nader, you are such a legend. Your voice is so soothing, I'm sure no matter how distressed your patients may be leave your practice feeling that bit better about themselves. Thanks again for posting your very knowledgeable and indepth videos for those who may not be able to afford to see a Therapist but can access these gems

    Pondering the concepts of filtering and all or nothing thinking opens up a whole world of possibility and potential that is otherwise discarded or denied. Paradoxically, trying to control the world by filtering and polarizing enslaves you in narrow pathways. Just being aware of my tendency to think like this is liberating. Being aware of the other possibilities brings fresh energy to life. Thanks.

    Actually that picture of the rainbow was about the first thing I notice every time I watch one of your videos. For me, it adds to your credibiltiy - a child's picture, evidence that you have a life :)

    Reminds me of how positive qualities of a person are filtered out in a moment of black and white thinking

      That can also be the case in the cognitive distortion of labelling.

      @@DrRamiNader Oftentimes these cognitive distortions are amplified under increasing emotional distress. Many of these distortions are similar to logical fallacies covered in critical thinking workbooks but do you believe working on one’s emotional intelligence should quell the effects these distorted ways of thinking have on us?

      If by emotional intelligence you mean awareness of thinking patterns and emotional states, then yes, the more a person is aware of these things, the better they will be able to manage negative emotional states.

    I always worried on what my coworkers feel about me. This has resulted in not being in a relationship and getting married and having a family. I fear they would be mad about it. I haven't talked to a guy in over 5 years for fear if my coworkers find out. I don't know if it is a control thing as it makes me feel anxious and sad.

    Is there a way to flip cognitive filtering from a weakness to A positive say cognitively filter all the negative only seeing the positive

    I have a question, i feel like I'm not able to notice the few distortions that i do when they happen. I notice them later on when i think that what went wrong. Then i realise the thing want bad it was a distortion in the way i thought and approached it.
