"Watercolors last indefinitely" - YES! That is exactly what I tell my husband everytime I buy some more. "Don't worry, these will be good forever. It's an excellent idea to get them right now, I can still use them when I'm 80." 😁

Great Sat Chat! I tend to hoard, and have now reached the point in life (72yo) that it is time to stop boarding and start using. I quilt, and went on a fabric moratorium about 5 years ago, and I think it I live another 20 years, I still won't run out of fabric. Use your stash and enjoy it, and make yourself happy! Happy Birthday Lindsay!

At 63 I have more watercolor paints, brushes, acrylic paints, inks, pastels, watercolor and colored pencils, that would last me 3 lifetimes... BUT, still buy a new watercolor paint or new style brush if it sparks my interest. Oh, the joys of retirement that permit me to paint daily and just have pure fun doing so.

One thing I've learned pretty quickly is to avoid anything that doesn't have an 'open stock' option for replacing colours - coloured pencils are a perfect example. I'd rather spend a bit more on say, a set of 24 that allows me to replace individual colours than go for a cheaper set that doesn't give me that option and I'd have to buy a whole new set just to get that colour.
This video just gave me permission to use up my watercolour paper with riotous abandon, thanks! 😂

I spotted the quilts behind you and sure is pretty.Fond memories of days gone by with grandmother's quilts in my mother's Afghans she use to make. They are all gone now,my grandmother's house not there no more, but memories of a lifetime, just like your art studio, your cherished memories are in there.👍👌😀❤

Great video Lindsay! I notice someone asked about gesso, texture paste, mixed media mediums. If they are water based (which most are). I open each one every 3 months or so, remove any hardened bits or crusts, usually on lid, and add a few drops of DISTILLED water. There are no chemical, minerals, and very slight chance of any bacteria or contaminates in distilled water. This replaces moisture that has evaporated. I live in Phoenix, AZ which is very dry. I actually do this to any water based art supplies I have such as paints, ink sprays (which I find are too intense to begin with), some glues, and Mod Podge. I cringe when I see artists talked about throwing out dried tubes of water color. I want to shout at the screen that the paint inside is fine! Just cut it open. I cycle through my brushes like you do. Last use is glue application then I incorporate it into a mixed media piece.

Thanks for all the great information, this went directly into my liked folder. But, wow - the commercials were like every 5 minutes it seemed. It's like this, if you have a favorite series you like to watch on TV, it's in a hour long time slot, but the show itself is actually 20 minutes, maybe 30 minutes, if your lucky. But I really, really did appreciate the information, was extremely helpful. So, sorry to rant about the commercials. Thanks again for everything. Take care. Becky B

Just went into a rabbit hole thanks to this lol I had no idea that you can replace the sizing on watercolor paper. I hoarded paper a few years ago and live in a hot climate 😭 pretty sure I’m going to need to buy some sizing to make use of what I have and thanks to you I know that’s doable now! I noticed my marker paper went bad a year ago and now I know what happened. Also helped set my mind at ease about the acrylics I let sit in my drawer haha. Love these chats!

Browns do this most for me, and one red. Not much else wise. A sketch book I had turned yellow...stupid cheap junk. Problem is, it wasn’t cheap - $10 if I remember right, so same price as the brand name stuff that I’m sure wouldn’t have discolored on me.

We moved to AZ within the last 2 years, we moved from VA a very humid state. My storage room for my studio has huge windows and huge sun windows on the ceiling. It’s hotter in that room than outside, and very cold in the winter. So anything that can melt or dry out is in my studio. So after watching your video I need to move my watercolor pencil s and stamps. Thanks!!!!!

So glad you made this video Lindsay. I work in museums so this comes up a lot. I love the rule of not buying what you won't use in ten years.
Some extra info for viewers in case they haven't come across it before:
Four factors which makes your supplies and your art work degrade quicker:
    1) Light. Especially Ultraviolet and natural daylight, but also artificial light (yes including some LEDs) will accelerate aging in basically everything. So don't keep things on windowsills! Ideally keep everything in the dark, but in the least try and keep it out of direct sunlight. Particilarly true for rubber, plastics, paper, wax, fabric.....ok, basically everything except perhaps graphite and charcoal.
    2) Acid and other pollutants. We commonly see people organising their supplies beautifully in Alex drawers from Ikea etc. Unfortunately these will cause damage due to the materials they are made of. All wood and composite wood products can be an issue (unless very old or bass wood, both of which have lower acid levels.) MDF also contains formaldehyde, so you don't want that interacting with your expensive supplies. Incidentally, Alex drawers are fine if you are storing makeup as you only keep this a very limited time so all the BeauTubers will be fine. But don't put your water colour paper in them. Ideally you need chemically inert storage materials. This would be perspex, glass. powder coated metal or a specially formulated plastic such as Myler/Melinex which you can make folders out of. So some old filing cabinets can work great and not break the bank. Or you can buy acid free card to make folders out of to store paper/buy acid free folders and boxes etc.
    3) Temperature and humidity, extremes at either end and also quick fluctuations can kill anything over time as either collagen or cellulose will degrade or acid will be produced or cross linking will be sped up or it will go mouldy or get eaten by pests. So if you keep all your stuff in a room/basement/attic which is often damp you could think about a humidistat controlled heater (i.e. it comes on to raise the temperature when the humidity is too high) OR a dehumidifier which comes on when the humditity is too high. This can removal some water from the situation but will also work to reduce fluctuation as your heating goes on and off and rockets the temperature by 20 degrees. Fun fact, for a one degree change in temperature the humidity changes by about 3% in the opposite direction. So if your heating raises the temperature by 10 degrees when it comes on that is a 30% humidity change. Daily! Not good for your stuff I promise. Because it also has to come back down at the other end of the cycle. You'll get away with it over a few months but not daily and not repeatedly.
    4) Using materials in ways they weren't designed for or mixing with other ingredients. This doesn't always cause a problem, but it can do and will certainly run the risk of quickening aging when it is on your art work, even if it seems to work at the time. It's your work, do what you like, but do it after doing your research if you have any notion of the stuff lasting a while or any idea of wanting to flog it to an unsuspecting punter. It is a totally legitimate artistic decision to choose for your work to change over time as the materials age. I've always thought a permanent underpainting with fugitive overpaint layers would be a really cool way to depict something like a flower garden, so the viewer would see the flowers age over the period of a few decades. But this should be a decision not an accident.

The first generation of Spectrum Noir markers did have a problem with drying out. I think that's why the Next Generation Spectrum Noir pens have caps that are so danged tight. After four or five years, I have only one dry Spectrum Noir markers that dried out. A good point about thread. I still have some of my mother's old thread on wooden spools. I can't use the thread because it's old cotton, but I just can't stand to get rid of them. The vintage spools appeals. And, I'd never considered that about 100% cotton watercolor paper. It's lovely to see your face every Saturday morning. You're such a help and encouragement.

Lindsey! You have read my mind! Last week I was actually scrolling thru all of your videos to see if I could find any tips on reviving my Liquitex and Golden mediums! I opened about 4 containers and they were all pretty solid 😢. I was so sad. They are probably more than 5 years old BUT my matte medium in the bottle was ok. The ones in the jars were just a giant glob. I thought about adding some water, then thought "WWLD?" What would Lindsey do- 😊 and started looking thru all your vids for maybe a glycerin or acetone tip.

My mom was just talking about throwing away all of her oil paints because they're so old -- I'll encourage her to take a closer look at them first.
I'm still using thread that came with my sewing machine twenty years ago, but it was higher quality stuff from the sewing machine store.
My own video this morning was about using old embroidery floss and yarn and fabric. It's amazing how many people expect a quilt or sampler to last a hundred years but are afraid to use materials that aren't brand new. I'm putting a link to this video in my description since you talk about so many things that are outside my own experience. (And I'm going to have to dig through my own sewing room to see what's gone bad over the years....oops!)

Still unpacking all my crafting and art stuff after moving out of my grandma's house following her passing; it's so funny you made this now because I am surprised at what I am finding that is wrecked! I threw out three bottles of glue still in their packages last night which were NOT that old. I was trying to finish a project (my munchkin is still little, so those precious only-momma-is-up hours are fleeting!), and it was like being on candid camera. Bottle after bottle I grabbed out of my art desk, opened the package, and it was dead. I had to laugh after the third one.
Funny enough, what I ended up using was a bottle of glue I used for some of the table decor for my wedding - 11yrs ago next month!!!!! It's been in a not climate controlled storage unit the last 7yrs, after sitting in an attic for 4yrs. I cannot believe it worked!!

Great video!! I had everything stored up in the bonus room when I first started my papercrafting. So add summer weather in middle Tennessee and air conditioning that doesn't totally reach up to that same bonus room...equals gummy rolls of adhesive (1st clue), and husband's paint for aircraft model building. So after some research...we moved practically everything downstairs where it's more temperature controlled.

So enjoy your company while I craft... I came up with an idea to use an old cast iron wine rack laid down sideways so it sits on my shelf behind my work table - and I purchased the exact size Pirouline cookie cans (7), with it's lid, to fit each hole to hold my marker sets, calligraphy pens, etc horizontally for easy access and easy flow with lot less replacement 😍 Oh, and thread should be treated like fabric; in less: light, dust, heat, needs to breathe, not stored in plastic bags 😉 BTW, I save old wooden spools in an old handwoven basket for not only decor but for quick access to reuse as: stamper either plain or w/small stamp attached, mini pin cushions on top, large wooden ones hold large needles inside with a glued cardboard bottom, raise up work pieces off table to dry, cool, etc... kids love to play as building blocks, fun to paint, wrap favorite fabric swatches around, wrap handmade binding fabric around to ease application onto quilts, etc...

If you have yarn or fabric and are concerned about it going musty, get those space bags from walmart or other big box store. They zip closed and then you take the air out with a vacuum and they are air and waterproof so that would keep it safe. I use those for extra linens and I stick a dryer sheet in the bag and even after a couple of years everything came out fresh smelling after being in a basement. And FYI the newer TomBow's do have a ventilated cap. At least the ones I bought 2 months ago do. I checked when you mentioned it!!

Very good video! Another good tip for beginners (that piggy backs off of your point about interests changing) is to learn what you like with smaller mixing sets before over buying! I fell into the trap of buying large watercolor sets when I first started, now years later I've realized I don't really use blue in my work at all, even for mixing. I have one or two that I use occasionally, but other than that I'm usually using green or purple for mixing. Unfortunately, I have TONS of blue paint, I won't be able to use it all in 6 lifetimes, and I'm planning on donating much of it.

Great information! Another thing I try to take in consideration is where I buy my supplies. Especially those supplies that have been around the market for a time and/or may go bad quicker. I was very slow to get the Distress Ink cubes (years on the market before I bought them) and i actually bought a set from a 3rd party vendor on Amazon that we’re almost dry when I opened them. Whereas a similar set of cubes purchased from a large stamp supplier were great. I think sales volume and how long an item sits on a shelf or in a warehouse before coming to a consumer is a good thing to consider too.

I always learn so much from you, and especially appreciate the tip about reviving old rubber stamps with glycerine. Some of mine are from the 90s and I just took a chance on some from that era purchased on ebay. They will be arriving this week so just in case they're not as fresh as I'd like, at least there's a way to rescue them.
Also, about thread. My mother saved everything. I have colored pencils (still in use), oil pastels (will try to reuse), oil paint (I don't paint in oils, but good to know I could), and thread all from my childhood in the 60s. The thread is no good for sewing, so I use it to make little bird nests that hold pearl eggs to decorate my journals. The spools are pretty and hold bits of velvet ribbon once the thread is gone.
One question about foam. You mentioned foam in your list of fabrics that would last, but that hasn't been my experience. Almost everything I've had that was made from foam has disintegrated to dust after not more than a few years. What kind of foam were you thinking of?
Thanks again for imparting such useful information. It helps to know the whys and wherefores when purchasing specific items. I hope your wrist and your dog are both better. ~ Lisa

Great information! I like making good investments in my art and craft supplies. I'm more likely to pay for quality products when I know they will last. Usually when I've opted for a cheaper version, I'm disappointed in the results.

About cardstock, some definitely fade faster than others. My Simon says stamp and heavyweight cardstock from Michael’s which I use for card bases are stored in the same unit, exact same way. There are some colors of Simon that come in their card kits that I hardly ever use. But when I get a new sheet I store it next to the old ones and there’s absolutely no fading. The old sheets look identical to the new. But the Michael’s cardstock, especially the black and the grays, fade like crazy after only a few weeks. And I keep my room dark! Very noticeable especially on the edges. Thankfully I only use Michael’s for cards, but beware if using for scrapbooking. The dyes they use on their papers are definitely not meant to last.

This is so helpful! I use my acrylic paints so fast I've never had issue with them drying but it's definitely good to know since I do buy a lot. And here in the Wisconsin winter I may forget them in the basement. And I have to use my resin soon since it's been a year... Thanks for the reminder!

Interesting info about the Tombow markers... they were the first of mine to dry out, and even when they were new, the fine tips didn't work (maybe 1 out of 10). It never occurred to me (at the time) to return them.

Lindsay, thanks for the insight on our art products. I certainly have learned that washi tape has a definite shelf life.I wish had had known this years ago.
I am wondering if anyone else has this You-tube issue. When I watch this series, and it seems to be only this series , I get ads every 3 minutes. The interval does not change whether I watch the ads to the end or skip over them. Is there a setting I could change? (without subscribing to You-tube)?
    thanks again Lindsay

I get fewer ads when I cast youtube to my tv vs my computer where I get tons! UA-cam is serving up more midrolls right now. I think they are trying to get people to subscribe to premium.

Very helpful. Another good idea is to use distilled water rather than tap when adding it to art products. You really do not want to add all the critters in tap water to your supplies. On a related theme, use a spatula or other tool to remove product from a jar rather than your finger: same reason.

As somebody who has way too many watercolour, acrylic and oil paint tubes, after having them for up to 12 years one thing that I'm finding is that the caps are becoming brittle and breaking on the neck of some of the paint tubes, leaving part of it on the thread, before the paint goes bad. Sometimes it is not possible to get some remaining parts of the cap off of the thread and the paint then doesn't last very long at all.
I have started saving caps of emptied tubes now to be prepared for if/when another cap breaks, I've barely emptied many tubes though.
Before I thought to start saving caps, I lost at least four tubes of good artist quality paint because the caps became brittle and broke. A couple of them were 200ml tubes that were almost full.

Great video! Love all your tips. I have one for you. I used to store all my spools of thread like you do. Then I noticed that dust and moisture weakened the thread. I bought plastic containers and store them that way. The containers for match box cars work great. I used to be an avid quilt maker and since card making etc have slowed down. Even more reason to protect them. I love your videos 😍. This kind is my favorite. You're a wealth of knowledge. Hugs. Sue

  • @Happytravellerkimmy

Thanks for the info about glycerin and rubber stamps! I think you should have a video (or series) that gives permission to people to use their most expensive art supplies because I'm seeing a lot of comments here about hoarding Arches. I only bought mine for a course and I think it's fine but I like my Legion paper just as much (I'm a beginner at watercolor). Maybe if we understood the fun of expensive paper (and also that you can use the other side if you don't like what you initially paint!) maybe we'd be more likely to use it before it loses its sizing. Thanks! Keep up the fun sat chats!

Great tips Lindsay!! This was so on point and delivered at the correct time, so I need to get back in my Acrylic paint phase then. ;-) Oh no!! Not my precious washi tape!! 😢 TFS!! The word you were looking for was ‘reconstituted’, instead of ‘resoluble’... be well, stay safe! 😘✨👍🏾
?? Question: One of my Copic Sketch markers, V28, barely used,?one end has gone gummy and now completely dried out... And ‘Yes, it was closed properly’, but the other end functions well, why?? Should I attempt to revive it with alcohol blending solution or 70% propyl alcohol?? Or just get the reinker??
My Technique Tuesday stamps kept in the binder has lasted me at least 15+ years...

The washi tape part BURNED for me. Especially since I may or may not have gone a little crazy on AliExpress getting, um...a "few" new rolls a couple weeks ago. I figure AliExpress washi tape is likely not the fancy high end bougie kind of washi tape.
But, I have some GORGEOUS washi tape that I won't use because they are too precious, and now I am going to make myself because I know the tape will go gross.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

Try soaking the tip in blending solution (tip down in a cup) and then recap and lay flat and see how it does. I've never had a copic nib breakdown with no use but I have had a trial nib go hard on me as the ink dried in the nib.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

I dont think the ali tape would be worse, it's probably cheaper because they make it where they sell it and it is more popular in Asia than here so the price is less. Use it up:)

Once again Lindsay you nailed it. Esp the silicone for my tools. I did notice that years ago i bought the whole set of distress markers and when i got them many of them didn't work. So keep that in mind if anyone is thinking about buying them. I would think if you wanted to use them get the ink and use with a brush or dip pen?!

Hi Lindsey! You are so awesome and helpful as usual. What about polymer clay? I keep them in sealed plastic bags but I have a trunk full. Also do the pebeo paints fall in the acrylic bin of things that aren't going to last long. I've also noticed swelligant patina products from Christi freise N have from my experience had a really short lif,e. I don't know if I'm storing them improperly somehow. This was really helpful. Thank You. ☺☺

I work and store my supplies in the basement. We have heat and AC control year round but the fear of spoilage is real. I've had some stuff last well over 10 years. I have a tub of gesso I haven't opened in ages, now I'm wondering if it will be ok if separated, it is about 8 years old. Thanks for the video! It was the first thing I thought about as I was setting up my space, it's Saturday and I wonder if the Sat Chat is up. 🤗

I was wondering the same thing as I bought jars of gesso from AC Moore years ago & they're unopened. I haven't used my acrylics for years, I better check & mess around with them now if they're any good. I realize now if it's a great price & I don't use it up soon, it was no value

If you can stir it up it should be fine. I've have that happen and the gesso was just fine after stirring.
