Well, first of all R.I.P Dr. Aczel. He was a true researcher! His work was outstanding and wonderful towards finding the history of 'Shoonya' in the sense that he acknowledged the roots at least; none dared it in their work in the past. He did point rightly towards the Bakhshali manuscript and that the radiocarbon dating it would reveal something major. I wish if he was with us here in 2017 to see the carbon dating results from Oxford's Bodleian Libraries!

The backward journey continues...we don't know yet from which part of the world we might find a new recorded evidence/s in the future with technological advances to further establish the orgin of Zero; as of now it's the Bakhshali manuscript!

SO, had there been no inscription of zero in India, he would've concluded that India has got nothing to do with the invention of zero. He should've known that India is an oral tradition mostly. Aryabhat (5th century CE) explicitly uses the zero as a place holder and Brahmgupta (aprx 2 centuries later) touches upon the zero as emptiness. And it is widely accepted, at least in India, that zero's concept existed much before Aryabhat.

    • @teetouch4764
      @teetouch4764 8 років тому +3

Yes, indeed the zero concept came from India to Cambodia no doubt and that zero concept was known in most of the world already. BUT.. the Indians failed to develop that concept into an actual number zero. That's the difference. You can say the Indians develop the concept of zero but the Khmers perfected it.

Too bad for your oral tradition. Sorry bro coz Khmers got this round. They ruled the day for this is the age of proof and evidence. 'Oral' traditions are limited to blow job only, in this time of drugs, sex and rock and roll. Who doesn't love that tradition. Go to pornhub and u'll see how much Indian aunties love it. Sorry Indian bro. Better luck next time until an older inscription is found in your holy land.

@@gametoppler Guess what? In September 2017, the Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford published the result of carbon dating the Bakhshali Manuscript - and confirmed that the said manuscript dates to between CE 200 and CE 400 (ie, 200 AD - 400 AD). You can view their 2' 51" video at ua-cam.com/video/pV_gXGTuWxY/v-deo.html .
Sorry to disappoint you, "bro", but the Khmers did NOT get this round. The Bakhshali Manuscript offers definitive proof and written evidence that ancient Indians were well-versed in the practice of using zero as a placeholder - and that this Indian tradition pre-dates the inscription in Cambodia by centuries. Not that it matters terribly; if ancient Indians were happy to share their knowledge, culture and religion with the Khmers, what's a zero between friends?
It may interest you to know that the famous temple at Angkor Wat was built by the Khmer king Suryavarman to the Hindu god Vishnu (of the famous Hindu trinity of Brahma - Vishnu - Shiva) before being gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple. The evidence of Indian influence here is two-fold: in the name 'Suryavarman' (in Sanskrit, 'Surya' means Sun), and the fact that the temple was dedicated to a Hindu god.
Also, bear in mind that Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was a Saka prince before he turned to religion (the Cambodian stela refers to the date 605 in the Saka calendar) and the Sakas ruled the region that is now in the northern part of the Indian state of Bihar and the southern part of Nepal.
So, "bro", disregarding your juvenile references to sex, drugs, rock and roll and porn, the fact of the matter is that:
      (1) the proof and written evidence of ancient Indians using zero as as a place holder are to be found in the Bakhshali Manuscript, which was unearthed in the "holy land" of India in 1881 AD;
      (2) carbon dating by the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford has proved the Bakhshali Manuscript to belong to the period 200 AD - 400 AD (ie, centuries before the evidence of the Cambodian stela); and
      (3) the influence of Hinduism on Khmers is evident in the temple of Angkor Wat being built by a Khmer king with a Hindu name - and dedicating the said temple to a Hindu god (not to mention that the date on the Cambodian stela refers to a calendar that originated in the "holy land" of India).
      QED
Next time, educate yourself before commenting publicly. It's not that difficult in this day and age of Wikipedia. Who knows? You might even actually learn something, "bro" - if you can raise your consciousness above sex, drugs, rock and roll and porn.

The speaker spent so much time and effort focusing on
    (1) the "erotism" of Khajuraho
    (2) how an Indian "just goes on and on" about Indian ancient knowledge
    (3) That "Jew" guy from blah blah place
Where he doesn't spend time is - how exactly did he get to know about this "artifact" that "no longer exists".
I believe this guy is a fraud. He sounds religiously biased.
I advise him to learn more about Indian texts. For the very strong reasons.
    (1) The theorm attributed to Pythagorus was indeed mentioned clearly by an Indian Hindu mathematician around 600 a.d.
    (2) By 600 a.d. Indian mathematicians had computed the value of Pi more precisely than anywhere else in the world.
And he doesn't have to bluff about this invitation. I ask him to learn Sanskrit from a true scholar and study Indian mathematical texts.

At the Khmer Legacy Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota, we have a complete history of the evolution of the number zero. From the Egyptian's conception of zyphr (baseline ) to the India's idea of Nirvana ( nothingness ) to the various symbols attempting to communicate what nothingness meant, to the Chinese' use of empty spaces, to the turtle like figures of the Mayans and the Babylonian's multiple attempts. If there is a more convincing evidence than the earliest number zero in 604 inscribed on the stone table as rediscovered by Mr. Amir Aczel we would very much welcome inclusion at the museum. Please kindly send your details to info@ikare.info. It is worth noting that Mr. Amir Aczel's journey to finding zero began in INDIA and traced its history to Cambodia. It is also worth noting that the dot as used in 604 by the Khmer for number zero was enlarged by the Indonesians just two years later. And subsequently fully enlarged as evidenced by a sansikrit number 270 in Gwaliar, India over 100 years later. And there is no doubt that the Khmer people have had a symbiotic relationship with the People of India. However, this relationship is akin to that of modern day England to America. For example, to speculate that the letter "A" came from England would be a gross statement to American, French, German, Italian, and many of the European nations. It is also worth noting that the Modern Day Angkor Wat is in Cambodia. The idea may have started in India or deeper into Mt. Meru. And where Mt. Meru is located is a topic of further discussion. However, the evidence ( not idea ) and not concept is in modern day Cambodia. Likewise, the K127 tablet rediscovered in Cambodia is the oldest evidence of number zero. The century following the oldest evidence of zero ( 604 ) marks the great construction of the Khmer empire which was the largest preindustrialized civilization equal to or greater than the Romans. It is conceivable that the zero was responsible for the engineering and sciences inscribed on the many temples across SE Asia today which was once part of the great Khmer empire.

I am reading the Book just now. Very lucid and smooth flowing in writing and far from academic jargons. When I saw this talk, I became unable to resist myself from commenting although I have not yet finished the book. However, I see Kaye as really not trustworthy, and the writer skips the matter without reviewing enough literature about the Bakshali Manuscript. Apparently, zero has philosophical significance and we see in the Pali canon where Buddha uses the word shunya in both general and philosophical significances. However, it is really interesting that why the writer focus to Cambodia if Buddhism and Hinduism were originated in India? It is true that Cambodia was Hindu and Buddhist empire once in the past. It is also true that many eastern asian scripts, including Khmer alphabetical system, have Indian Origin. Besides we do not see any noticeable mathematical development in Cambodia. India has every possibility of the birth place of zero. We see Brahmagupta (598-674 AD) already had used zero in his mathematics before so called Cambodian inscription which has been dated Saka era 605 or 683 AD. Here, it is worthy to notice that Saka era is itself an Indian calendar. In conclusion, just because we see the oldest use of zero in Cambodian inscription we cannot decide that zero was invented in Cambodia. Yes, the idea of finit and infinit are also found in Buddhism. Once, Buddha was asked whether cosmos is finit or infinit, see the link www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.063.than.html

Very good talk. I found it a bit surprising that he seemed so perplexed at the acts of destruction different groups have perpetrated against art. He censored erotic statuary right at the beginning of his talk. Is it hard to make the stretch that if you are so offended by simple depiction of a fundamentally human activity that you intentionally omit it when trying to show people that culture that a less civilized group would take the further step of destroying the art? They both had the same basic motives - prevent people from seeing or appreciating the art.

So does he know that the Zero is Indian? He went to Angkor Wat which was built by an Indian King who used ZERO which means that Zero was Indian... Or he just ignorant that he doesn't know that Buddhism comes from India too?

Suryaverma built a temple to Vishnu, so vishnu is an Indian god, lmfao where the stupid fuck is it not related to india? HAHAHAH

lol i think you should first learn some history, the Indian Chola/Pandya and otehr kings rules cambodia, so they left behind their knowledge, and some people.
Thats how Cambodian natives even got to know of many things, religion, language and culture etc.
So again use your dumb brain, how is it NOT related to INDIA? LMFAO

According to our college professor the decimal number system was based in Hindu-Arabic number system where basic digits of counting use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 that were adapted by Arabs from Indians, but the Arabs also added the 0 to the number system. I don't know how accurate such information, we may investigate. Zero may have just been a concept used by the Indians in philosophy during ancient times, but perhaps the Arabs may have been the ones that used it early as numeral.
On the other hand the ancient Mayan civilization in South America separately developed vigesimal number system which included zero numeral.

Frankly, extremely surprised that a mathematician interested in the history of the zero did not mention the Babylonians and the Sumerians, who were the first people in the world to develop a counting system and invented the zero. He even dismissed Persian mathematician, al-Khowarizmi. I am not convinced that there is relationship between Buddhist concept of nothingness or emptiness and the number zero. Completely different subjects. Your research was more based on places you want to visit.

Finally.... someone with intellectual understanding of historical concepts devoid of racist thinking, the proof of India's major paternal lineages represented by Y chromosomes in haplogroup R1a proves by DNA evidence of this Persian haplogroup present in India as founder effect closes the deal on this [men may lie through their teeth but DNA will never lie] this along with linguistic evidence in that Aveestan is the mother of Sanskrit, cuneiform tablets and archeology prove India & Babylon trade from 6000 years ago. Well done Puni Pantaluni the golden zero is yours.

Zero is a numerical number by it's own right. Nothing (zero) is not an idea it is a place holder before life and afterlife. It stands for the opposite of something (x,y,z and etc) temporary endeavor with the present of "space time" to find and understand zero (nothing) with the clear hint from the books of the prophets and/or ancient tablets "from dust (nothing) we came and to dust (nothing) we returned". It is conceivable that the zero was responsible for the engineering and sciences inscribed on the many temples across SE Asia today which was once part of the great Khmer empire. There is no GOD but ALLAH. ALLAH is not GOD but "The Nothing" is the only Almighty One created by none. Spiritually connected to zero (nothing) apart from mathematical, computers, sciences , safety, nothingness and etc.. is utmost importance in our way of life (culture and belief). For example the communist is associated with nothing except something (x, y, z and etc) and similar to secular systems. To find and discover zero (before and after Big Bang) for the full understanding of the reasons of our existence and beginning/ending. The efforts for finding the first zero is the first step in a long journey yet to be realized.

Amir Aczel is clearly misrepresenting the facts here. Finding a Glyph in Combodia does give an evidence that earliest zero was found there, but it needs to be explained that the Saka Calendar and the script on the temple stone is Indian in origin. Also the culture on Combodia in 7th century is clearly Indic . I.E. it is the same Civilisation with deep cultural and economic links. This finding only proves further that the idea of Zero and decimal number system is of Indian origin.

I can't watch this... it's painfull after 13 mins... with so much discredit to India... When learned people talk like this... what do you expect from others...
    .
they use the words like "magic", "strange" for India even though the carving of that so called 4x4 magic square is in front of him
    .
"they claim that history of India is millions of years ago, so of course they don't know what they are talking about"... he just spoke of Ramanujan and he thinks he knows what he's talking about
    .
Well our "Swadeshi Indology" will slap proofs over these "Western Indologists"... will take some time... but we'll see
    .
