- Today, we look back at the history of and legacy of even more of the the oldest Counter Strike beta maps, and why they never transferred over to Counter Strike Source, Global Offensive or CS2. These were maps made for Counter Strike's Beta versions, but never got full officially remade for any of the later CS titles. Where maps like Dust2, Inferno, Nuke and Mirage lived on, these maps were sadly forgotten for in development of the later games, but certainly not forgotten by the community that spent hundreds of hours playing them since CS 1.6.

There is a certain charm to these old maps. It was a time when the game was less competitive and mapmakers were free to experiment.
Yes, less competitive and more about just having fun
Jeepathon2k was a blast. Fun fact. You could drive the jeep to the bombsite and occasionally it would let you plant on thr jeep then drive the bomb around as it glitches out, making the CTs chase you in their jeep. Simple map but made for some epic rounds and a lot of laughs.
Lol this was SO fun! Jeepathon was a glitchy mess but everyone had a blast😂

I played for years on a french community server with a map cycle of more than 600 custom maps....those were good times...the server is still online (Cscargo). There's something special with some of those obscure 1.6 maps, they were like mysterious for me, like little strange worlds were I liked to hang out at night with a few players, or sometimes even alone . They are lost worlds for me now ! I miss those times and my youth. Thanks for your videos.
"foption" was short for "final option" referring to the nukes

jeepathon2k was hilarious at LAN parties - it was the first implementation of the moving-brush func_vehicles, they also implemented these in versions of cs_siege at that time, as an APC carrier - basically 90% of the time, if you got in the back of the APC, even if the driver was very careful, the entire thing would bug-out and everyone would get crushed to death or glitched into a brush and then pushed outside of the BSP - it was traumatic and hilarious. More often than not, the APC driver intentionally tried to do this, just to grief/troll the pub server.

Really enjoyed these vids. I was a big player of CS back in the Beta days so remember many of these, always had a memory of Rotterdam but so few remember it I was wondering if I had dreamt it up. Also Oilrig in the last vid, actually played real games on it. Good time. Great work, subscribed.
Vegas is fun. I remember playing in 1.3 or 1.5 I think and I believe there is an easter egg there where gman would suddenly appear in a window or something.

I use to frequent a server that only played the jeepathon2k map. I'd drop in and know half of the players on the map at any given time. A lot of us even would even have each other's AIM screen names and kept in regular contact. Miss those days..

I'd love to see more videos like this covering popular (or perhaps unpopular too) custom maps for GoldSrc CS.
Maps that use drivable vehicles or “planes” were lots of fun for public servers, there was even dedicated ones just for drivable vehicles.
jeepathon reminded me how much i miss all the dumb car maps for 1.6

man jeepathon i spent hours and hours on this one and i have great memories of running people over or doing knives only and chasing players around. it must be hard to understand how fun these simple maps were to people who have never seen them or grew up with maps having a million times more detail. it took like 12 hours to download counter strike beta 7 on a 56k modem lol so when you got a custom map you put time into playing it as the map probably took an hour to download

Back in the day we spent countless hours in the local PC game club playing the map de_mansion
My favourite is when it's nighttime and the ship in water. Also in the jungle one map where you can use the minigun
VEGAS i loved vegas, if you spam E at the mic you will eventually hear elvis say "thank you very much" I also loved the drum and bass loop heard outside near some car or house

Rotterdam was reworked into one of the fav maps of all time that we even have in CS GO but fans did created it for CS 1.6 and became an a hostage map despite originally it was defuse map but for some reason fans did a good job adding it as hostage map saddly this map cant be anymore found due to the fact the group that created it closed the whole site idk if it can be downloaded in the hostage version

Jeepathon was a test for the vehicles being drivable and not on a track. It was ridiculous and fun as hell. You should do some of the custom maps. There was a time when every sever had iceworld on it and when it switched to that people would either be very happy or very upset.

I can not forget that good times i had on de_fang 1999 :D it was great fun on this map, it was that dark sometimes i used Nightvision Goggles :D everybody runs and made the on off noises xD
I once made a map for 1.6 with vehicles that I thought made for interesting gameplay; I took my normal and very boring defuse map and placed a road snaking around the perimeter. CT's started inside the town and T's were given two vehicles. Sightlines into the map from the road were limited to L-shaped corridors to keep the vehicles from being overpowered. They were supposed to be able to load 4 players so that even though CT could hear where the vehicles were, they didn't know how many players were in each. Although it worked in LAN, online players would always get bumped out by lag so I gave up. I miss the early days where there weren't really any guidelines and we were all just figuring out what was fun... CS seems so strict now in comparison

I was surprised not to see cs_siege in here - a pivotal early map, and it's got an interesting if sad story behind it.
I love Jeepathon2k, I always go for the water for the navy seal feel

A lot of these maps got revived by Nexon in CounterStrike Onlike later, for example Vegas
True, but CSO is not technically a mainline CS game
well De Fang was the map that later on was created back by community and become one of the best Zombie Maps of all time
They really liked dark maps back in the days.
I'm sure I've played Jeepathon. Not sure what game I played it on though. I'm sure it wasn't original CS. Perhaps it was source with dodgy vehicles.
Another fun fact about de_vegas, by the way - there's a sign for "Science and Industry", which is a reference to a fairly popular Half-Life mod by that name which Mike Rosser had also worked on.
They were all great. Biggest and most important point i would say from this is Valve is very wrong not allowing CS to be "FUN" too. It shouldnt ONLY be about serious competition. Serious competition is a staple. Brand maps that are approved for that. But seriously... let people mod and have fun with the game. Encourage FUN in addition to serious play.
De Foption was also later on added by fans u can download it to CS 1.6 but saddly the map even tho was one of best designs it did luck a lot of possibility for Terrorists to even win a round other than Rush in with P90 or shotguns
I've tried the map and it's pretty good and yes because it's a new map I don't know where to put the bombs and the theme of the de_rotterdam map is similar to de_train but de_rotterdam seems bigger than de_train it's a cool map in my opinion
Foption is kinda odd tho seeing a Round Vault Door at T-Spawn and has a number on it. Fallout Reference maybe.
Edit: its a imbalanced map having a killswitch for T-Spawn in CT Spawn
Actually, the vault door was a reference to Fallout 1, apparently the map creator was a fan.

I was lucky to play rotterdam and vegas in internet cafe times back in 2000.
Vegas was grinded all the time, rotterdam a little less.
In 2012 when i became admin on a very known polish public server with 32 slots i forced other admins to put rotterdam in the mappool and it was lickily very often played so this map got 2nd life at least in polish community.
From the little bit I played of Rotterdam in the past, it was a pretty good map, I mainly liked the atmosphere of it rather than the actual gameplay, but still good 👍🏻
@@ZASLONPC atmosphwre was awsome on this map especially in internet cafe. This map was mainly played at the evening when older predators came to internet cafe
jeepathon2k was epic on 32 player servers. You could even toss smoke nades in the truck or plant the bomb in it chasing people.

Daaamn, I havent seen the Haxor sign in a long time. You could go up to that stage with the microphone and use it, i think it played a song. Also in the last video on cs_estate you could ring the doorbell which never got old. Just the idea of a Counter-terrorist going into a life or death situation and spamming the doorbell as the fight begins was hilarious. Or you could spam it to entice some T's to wall bang the door then attempt climb in thru the window behind them. Ahh the inevitable fooling around that came from long hours of CS.

Can't help but think that if CS:GO had "night maps" it would bring a whole other level of fun to the game. We've already had low visibility maps like Insertion, and it was reeaaally fun to play with friends :D
jeepathon looks like a beta for the famous "!vip_truck"
