    Wrenched for 7 years before driving full time and that experience has been invaluable as a driver, especially since it’s for the same company, I call myself a mechanic that switched to the dark side, ha! I think every driver should spend in a year in a shop and every tech should spend a year driving, it’ll never happen but the communication between the 2 would benefit, it’s always a thing, techs don’t like drivers and drivers don’t like shops, to new AND old guys(and gals) thats a rift we can all mend ourselves without beancounters, meetings, safety briefings, or focus groups, we all have a job to do working towards the same goal.

    One thing I'd contest is fixing your truck. I'd love to learn how to do it myself but many carriers won't let drivers repair the truck (at least the two I worked at.)

    One thing that has changed in 45 years since I as a driver my parents age about running over the road is at that time he warned my some companies would fire you if you ran a legal log book. With al most all over the road companies on elog that is not the case.

    Best thing I ever learned in my 30 years doing OTR was how to make basic repairs on the side of the road; saved me a lot of time and $$, takes time to learn but well worth the time.
    Truckers are last of the range riding cowboys; the cowboys that were alone most of the time at a "trappers cabin", if lucky then might have 1-2 others around, in this career a person gets to know who they truly are over time, some can handle it and some cannot.

    Make sure you get yourself a good tool kit together. Make sure you have an assortment of brass fittings for air line repairs. Learn how to put on a set of chains properly. You would not believe how many drivers don’t know how.

    I am investigating several CDL schools around my town in south western Ontario and want to know as of March 1st 2022 the mandates here are being lifted. So my question is "Can I become a Truck Driver and work in Can/Am without having any covd jabs?"

      I been driving 6mos in U.S.A and never heard any companies that required a vaccination for Covid-19.

    • @EllieODaire
      @EllieODaire 2 роки тому

      I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but the easy answer is to just get the vaccine if you can. It'll keep you available for cross border freight regardless of the mandates on either side of the border, you can still protest and oppose those mandates, and it will let you keep your wheels rolling and the money flowing into your bank account. Once you have more experience you'll have the leverage to be able to take moral stances like refusing the vaccine or not delivering to specific companies/cities you disagree with politically or whatever, but early in your career you need to prioritize flexibility and learning the trade.

      You won't get hired being a new driver, you really won't get hired if you can't go to the US, its no longer worth driving trucks in Canada, put your efforts into something else.

    It works for some can based be strictly on personal issues for me the disruption of my personal life made it not worth it I’m the kinda guy who always has outside interest and trucking took me away from them also a huge factor is what kind of family life you have it doesn’t work if you have a dysfunctional wife and you have to be the anchor in your family and divorce was not an option
