Flat Mountain Pond Overnight | Hiking the White Mountains of New Hampshire

- Hiked up to, and around, Flat Mountain Pond in New Hampshire this weekend. With temps on Saturday being in the 60s and sunny I wanted to take advantage and also do something with hopefully not much remnants of snow. The hike is really beautiful with lots of water crossings. Sunday was supposed to be a washout according to the forecasts on Friday but we got no rain at all on Sunday.
You pretty much are never not near water on this hike. We started at the Intervale side and exited out Bennett street. There was a roughly 3 mile road walk back to our car. I believe it was roughly a 13-14 mile trip.

Please note that I am not recommending any of the gear seen in any of my videos. The gear I use is what I have found works best for me at the time period I am using it. I have come to these gear choices through vast levels of trial, error, and experimenting with gear out on trail.
Gear, clothing, footwear, etc. are not one style works for all. Do as much research as you can, try out things in person if able, and make the best informed purchase decision for YOU. Do not buy gear just because it worked for, was showcased by, or recommended by someone on UA-cam

Last year I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding caused by the pandemic, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video. If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone.
If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: ua-cam.com/video/dhd7E4rGIwA/v-deo.html
Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0
Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/

I was out on some of the trails in Loudon, NH this weekend, I am not really in the mood for mud and monorails yet. I have had it with seeing dog was bags just left on the side of the trail. It drives me crazy.
@@PaulsWanderings UNH Hedgehog was IMMACULATE despite the many vehicles in the lot. I was pleasantly surprised.
@@beckiejani7782 It may not be like that for long, I believe Steve from the book store is stepping sown as that trail maintainer. I haven't seen him in a while but Bailey (US Forestry) has it on her list for orphaned trails.
No trace principles is a YES for me.
@@williamjohng.balderama5023 most people say that till the grey jays show lol
Thank you Chris, I’m glad you’re back and very much appreciate your videography skills, choice of music and “leave no trace” message 👣
Many thanks!
Came home, tired and stressed. 17 minutes and 32 seconds of CGO mountain therapy and now it's all good. As always, fantastic music selection and awesome videography. Thanks Chris.
Same. Great video!
Appreciate that Mark!
Stumbled upon this as it was recommended on my home page feed. As others have commented, it was perfect for relaxing at bedtime. Beautifully edited.
So lovely
Really nice video; you do a great job of showing the events and experience; some videos are about the vlogger and you don't get to see the adventure, but you really capture the adventures; thank you!
Such a great hike been ably 17 years for me. We used to do it in the winter….
I love watching your videos when I get into bed at night. You are so calm and seem to genuinely enjoy the outdoors. Very relaxing to watch. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you for the nice comment and for watching 🙏🏻
Another great video. I have to laugh, whenever I am planning a hike and go onto UA-cam to find a video to see what the hike might look like, I can pretty much bet that I will have a video of you doing the hike or if I need inspiration for hike I can count on you to give me a great idea.
I am collecting a list of short hikes for overnighters with the hope of getting back into shape to get back up to the Garfield tent site. I did that overnighter about 25 years ago and I really want to do it again.
that cabin looks like a sweet spot to sleep in
I love trips like this. It’s great to bag a peak and get awesome views from them, but those rivers and brooks are awesome views too.
Agreed. I’ve been enjoying the non major peak trails a lot.
I hiked that trail for my hiking merit badge in Boy Scouts, and it was an interesting hike. Especially seeing all the old logging railroad stuff along the way. Fun fact, some of the steam locomotives that worked that trail when it was still a railroad still survive at Clark's Bears on the white mountain central railroad.
Sure is beautiful there!
Very nice. Peaceful.
That was a great watch Chris! Really good to see you out there again!
Beautiful
I am so excited to get back to the Whites this summer, I’ve missed hiking so much.
Another great video. I am learning a lot about "filming" hikes by watching your and hiker's videos. I have learned that having a lot of point of view shots isn't necessary. I love the shots of you hiking to or away from the camera and the still shots add a lot so I am starting to incorporate a lot more of those shots into my videos. I am starting so do a lot of non-mountain hikes until mud season is over. I can't wait to hit the mountains, though. I want to do some overnights so I can get some astrophotography and maybe incorporate those into my videos. I am hoping to do the Bonds again and stay at Guyot and do Garfield and stay at the Garfield tent site.
Nice relaxing video ,appreciated 👋🤘,be up on the bald faces this weekend ,from me and Chewie “happy trails”stay safe out there 👋
Your van is awesome! It's a nice area out there
Nice video! So calming with the views, streams, pond, and nice music selection. Looks like a nice lower elevation trip. Good to see you out there again.
Ya this was a good one. Really enjoyed the hike and the scenery
This was so peaceful to watch, great job. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for watching Kim!
This looks like a great overnighter to bring mew hikers. Not much elevation but absolutely gorgeous!!!
Your camera shots are so good. Glad your back
Thanks Jerry, glad to be back out!
You almost had company..... Not overnight, but a hello on the trail. I have always wanted to go here, but Prema wanted the heights and we had a late start so we went to Hedgehog. I'd like to stay two nights there and explore. What a beautiful place!
It was very nice. I’ve heard it can get quite busy though
Beautiful hike. Glad you beat the rainy weather on the way out. : )
You and me both haha
The big rocks in the winter are like giant cotton balls you just ski right over them….
That water looks c-c-cold!
Very good. Greetings from Finland!
Vermont......sounds inviting...
Nice video! What is the black puffy hoodie jacket you were wearing?
Another great video! Have you used the REI Passage 1 tent yet and if you have, how did you like it?
I have not. I bought that specific for winter camping and unfortunately did not do any this season
so glad you're back. always relaxing to watch your hikes. BTW, I have the same OR cap in blue and noticed the brim is sort of wonky...seems like it's on right but it tends to sag on one side. Does yours do that?
I don’t think so on mine. At least not that I have noticed
Just watching and noticed. Friend had 2 foam pads was thinking about doubling up how well is it working out?
He was using the thermarest zlite foam pad and the Paria recharge inflatable pad. He slept warm through the night with both. I think he likes the foam under to kind of protect the pad and double nice for lounging haha
What a great weekend trip and wow that place looks beautiful to hike. Got lucky with missing the rain also. Did you run into any other people out there hiking or camping at all? As always great video!
Saw 5 other people. A group of two were camping and then another late solo guy camped as well. Only saw 2 people out for the day though. Apparently this place can get really busy though so I suppose we lucked out pretty well
Hi Chris, Love the new style of your videos and nice choice of music. Plus, I can still hear nature with the music. Nice! Question, did I see you put a down sleeping bag/quilt in a plastic bag and then put in your pack? I just bought a down sleeping bag and I was wondering if I can just squish it into a bag. Thanks again for sharing your journey.
Ya I just cram it into the bottom of my backpack within the trash bag to keep it dry. Definitely don’t want that bag to get wet. Thanks for watching!
Awesome footage hmm SONY camera 💁
Great hike. Love seeing all of the water features. What kind of temps did you have overnight?
Ya it was a great hike. Would have been even more interesting had it rained haha. That morning we woke up my little mini thermometer said 38(f) degrees
Great video Chris. Looks like a nice, easy overnight trip.
Looks like a great place to go. I have been considering it since before the pandemic. Was some of that hike on the old logging railroad?
It follows the old railroad bed and has one of the sharpest turns in the whites. You wont notice it, a mans sharp turn is not the same as a railroad lol I hit this with a friend after I got off the LT, it also rained but we stealthed due to so many people at the shelter. I slept for 12 hours and took 3 or 4 naps. Very relaxing hike.
@@trailslippah Thanks for the info. I hope to get up there this year.
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA I filmed it but it never made the cut to be edited and uploaded like so many other hikes. Lol
Where do you get music for your videos? Thanks.
I have used epidemic sound, musicbed, and the youtube audio library. The tracks from this are from musicbed
Found it....I found the Heavenly Donuts bag at 11:13. What do I win?
There’s another one in the video too 😂
Chris, do you believe in a hidden hand over reality, and that there are no such thing as coincidences?
