- Since this dub likes to fall into obscurity (Most people talking about Super Milk Chan out there on the internet mention/reference the direct translation dub that aired on Adult Swim.) I decided to upload it for preservation and exposure purposes. Enjoy the first volume of the Americanized dub of Super Milk Chan done by the same talented crew who would later bring you the famous Ghost Stories dub!

Still can't believe ADULT SWIM passed up this dub despite their gag dub of Shin Chan.

It’s prolly because the dub came to early as we see a year later we get to see shows like Metalocolypse and Boondocks air with its vulgar language
@@kujakubes241 that’s true, AS’s programs were TV-14 at most att. I think The Venture Bros. was the first to break the TV-MA mold, and then Aqua Teen broke ground with the episode “Dickesode”, where they embraced that they could have TV-MA episodes now
the shin chan dub wasn't until 6 years after this. Super Milk Chan came out in the year 2000, it was like the prototype for a lot of following [as] shows humor, such as ATHF, Harvey Birdman, Drinky Crow, 12 Oz Mouse, Perfect Hair Forever, Assy McGee, Sealab 2021... all shows that follow a similar formula

I like how four of the VA's for this adult cartoon we're from Full Metal Panic, Hilary haag, Monica rial, Lucy christian, and Mike Mcrae were Teletha, Koyoko, Kaname, and Gouren. The show was also being dubbed and distributed by ADV films at the time.
And of course, Ben Pronsky (Hanage) is now doing voice roles for Bang Zoom, Iyuno-SDI and Studiopolis.

I am but honestly, im not liking this joke dub as much as the one we got that aired, I prefered the more more laid back vibe and the building off repeated gags, this dub while more coherent is so agro and not as complementary to the surreal visual gags, it'd be like if FLCL had a version where the plot is more straightforward but the characters are screaming it at you

It's just weirdly nostalgic because while I liked the show when it was on AS (different dub) this more vulgar dub really rings of other shit from AS or elsewhere that I still would have loved as a kid.

Adult Swim was so stupid not to air this version. Instead of being boring, monotone and incomprehensible because of the Japanese references no one got, this could have very well ended up being the next Aqua Teen Hunger Force, or at least a show with humor very much like their other shows, and would have been a good fit. I can only imagine why the hell they would air the boring version of Milk-Chan and not this.

I honestly believe they should've met somewhere in the middle. The voice acting in this version is a bit obnoxious, I prefer Monica Rial as Tetsuko and I prefer Milk's soft voice in the AS dub. I also really hate the live action sections in this version. But I agree that they should have made the humor appeal to western audiences.
It would have just been the power puff girls. Glad they made it the way that they did even though it failed.
I could’ve sworn they ran this version at some point, I vividly remember seeing it on tv around 04-05 and I wasn’t allowed to use the internet then, so there’s no way I watched it on a computer. Huh.

I first saw it on adult swim and was too young to really get all the references enough to really enjoy it, and wasn't even aware of this other version. However, I would occasionally remember clips or think of that weird song clip (Bi bi bi bi Dano dano dano.....sounds like that kinda) and I suddenly remembered, Milk Chan! Toonaloo Town. I took the lead from Beccatsura! and looked at Wikipedia but I couldn't find anything. But I'm ASSUMING this is the President's line in...my version? I can hear Mike say it in my head, but it's been so many years, it could just as easily be the original Japanese. But if I had to put money down, I'd say it's my line.
So this show wasn't a fever dream I had.

I feel like I'm one of the few who actually likes the live action segments. I just think its sheer existence and dryness adds to shows absurdity, especially in the later volumes, like where they have to act out the sound effects for an entire episode whilst interrupting it every few seconds for their own shenanigans.
Still think it's so weird Adult Swim didn't use this version. It's like they put the wrong tape in and then just kept it that way because it's the graveyard slot with all of 3 viewers.
During my high school days, I'd watch shows with my friends in the back of the bus on my laptop with a bunch of shows saved. We watched through all of Panty and Stocking, Drawn Together, Ghost Stories, Milk Chan, and Friendship is Witchcraft.

The live action stuff feels pointless but whatever, it's about having fun theoretically
As a kid/teen who just knew about "Japanese cartoons," I thought they were All given a 1 to 1 faithful translation (more or less), unaware there were different dubbing companies with different sensibilities and a different set of cast members (this being before finding out about the 4kids/Funimation fiasco).
So these ADV clips would have been lost to me even more..

Gamba EJ. Don''t get the Peacock ref, but no, Milk wasn't as crude in the JP version. I took the character and dialed it up. She was a brat. I made her brattier. She said "You dumbass" I gave her a foul mouth through the whole show. And that is ONE regret I do have about the show. I was bored by the Japanese actress's delivery of "You dumbass" and that made me interpret it as it would be boring to hear her say the same thing all the time. I totally lost the power of it being her catchphrase and I changed what she said every time (I think every time). And I really wished I woulda kept "You dumbass!" and just had Hilary tweak the read every now and then. Although I do still like how violently she says "Will you SHUT UP?!" in its stead. But yeah, I fucked up. But as for making her cruder, I still like that. Hilary's voice cussing just fills me with glee. I don't know why.
@@STE7ENFOSTER I should've mentioned. Peacock is a character in a roster from the popular fighting game, Skullgirls. She's just as cartoony and crude as Super Milk Chan in the American dub... I think. But it's interesting to know what studios did with their licensing for Japanese shows in the US.

Remember if you want to be sure youre watching the joke dub, Its always the one where the water head guy sounds like a chain smoker. I always remember that fact from the Rebeltaxi video.

This show is perfect for early 2000s nostalgia. Imo nerd culture peaked then.
Personally I still like the direct translation version better. Maybe it's because when compared to Tim and Eric, and Tom Goes to the Mayor it's "You have to know to get it" humor and the tone of it was more entertaining by comparison to the anti-humor "jokes" Tim and Eric used to flood the channel with.
But after RebelTaxi made a video I tried going back and, I think I still prefer the direct translation over the added ADV office humor segments, and the chain smoker toned Tetsuko 😅

When I got the show, I told them it had a lot of problems (boring and not making sense for two) and I didn't even know if my fucked up dub was gonna save it, so I laced the live action in there to keep people watching. Not everybody liked it, but those that like it, really like it. So thank you. You're awesome.
ADV were just the absolute best. I admit to being biased because they were *the* anime studio back in the '90s. But they knew what they were doing, and they were good at it.

In a perfect world this would have been the version they used and it would be super popular and sell a milkion copies, but this world is not perfect.
OMG! So many voice actors from so many animes. I don't care much for Milk chan I just like the segments with voice actors. Lucy Christine is a queen. This would be better if Laura baily was in it.
Lasbro Brony: You're right! It's like anime all stars! And you're not the only one who preferred the live action sequences to the anime. That was my goal in doing it. If you didn't like the cartoon, maybe you'd stick around to see what happened with these idiots. So I'm glad you liked it! I had a really fun time directing them. They all knew my shorthand, I wouldn't have to say more than three words and they'd go in the direction I wanted them to and give me better than I even dreamed it would be. So proud of all of them. And Luci was brilliant. Here's some more scoop: Her character was based on ADV's actual production manager at the time, a little brunette spitfire named Shelly Thomas. Production can be pretty stressful and when things weren't going right one day, she took her tiny little fist and hammered it on the desk for effect while yelling. Well, you do something like that in front of me and it brands you for life. Every since that moment, we all called her Little Hammer. Even gave her a little plastic Playschool hammer and work bench that a five-year-old would play with, which was appropriate because Shelly is about the size of a five-year-old. So Luci just copied Little Hammer. That's Little Hammer's office that Luci's using as her office in the show.
She was the spokesperson for Anime Network at the time.

The gag dub replaces the (absurdly obscure) Japanese pop-culture references with American ones and swaps the live-action sequences with footage of the English voice actors. It also skews waaaaay over to the mature side of the spectrum. ADV did this because they weren't sure what exactly [adult swim] wanted, so they decided to give them options. Much to ADV's surprise, [as] aired the "straight" dub. "

I was going on vacation when they were going to decide which one to buy and I TOLD ADV, "Don't let 'em buy that faithful one, it sucks. At least my version makes SENSE." I came back and they told me which one they picked and I said right then and there; This will be the biggest bomb ever to air on that programming block. And, sure enough...

@@username-1999 You're right. And, no, it was not this dub. Okay, kids, here's the story on that. I was famous (some say infamous) for my adaptive approach to the scripts. Some of the criticisms were valid, a lot of it though was just otaku bullshit. But NO Japanese studio or creator ever said anything about my scripts. When I was looking at Milk-Chan, it was SUCH a fucking snooze. The trippy color palette was brilliant. The character designs were unforgettable. But what they said? How they said it? After ten minutes of listening to Milk who talked like she was overdosing on valium and Tetsuko who sounded like she was overdosing on muscle relaxers, I wanted to put a bullet in my head. Milk-Chan taught me that comedy is not international. What works in Japan doesn't necessarily work here. What's the fucking deal with all the food gags? for instance. Anyway, I couldn't take it. I knew I was gonna ramp Milk up to about 11 and make her this raging toddler. You know, get the energy of the slumberous show UP. And I looked at Tetsuko and her character is an old robot but the Japanese voice is childlike (huh?) and so much like Milk's, right down to Milk's slow, spacey delivery. So I wanted to really lean in to that old robot idea, so I cast Marcy Bannor to be the psychologically abused Tetsuko. Marcy was BRILLIANT. It doesn't matter what she said, I laughed every time she opened her mouth. This cast's deliveries were sonic marvels, just as charming and unique as anything Warner Bros put out in their heyday. And NOBODY sounds funnier pitching a foul-mouthed fit than the kewpie-voiced Hilary Haag. Well, when Milk's creator heard the dub, he was not happy. But the powers that be agreed with me that the show was better my way. So I suggested that we keep my take on the show and we called it the "Americanized" version. But it didn't matter because either fans or critics had already branded my style and it was forever known as the "fosterized" version. (It's even an actual TERM in the Urban Dictionary. Look it up! Naturally I don't agree with the definition exactly. But is it cool that I'm in the Urban Dictionary next to such classics as rusty trombone and bootylicious? Hell yeah it is.) We would also (at considerable expense) record an EXACT, almost word-by-word faithful version. So Marcy was out and Monica Rial was in and she did it fresh, but the entire cast had to do everything all over, but in the shitty way the Japanese did. (Sorry, but I just hated it.) It was mindnumbing, soulsucking work. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do and it WAS this guy's IP, so OF COURSE I had to treat it with the respect that deserved and if he wanted it to sound more like his version, than by cracky! I was gonna give it to him. I'll continue this in the coment to Hooded Chaos Productions!

Came here because of Rebel Taxi. Figures crossed that this gets a revival that's more polished and has more substance.
While the Japanese OP and ED are the best, "The Super Milk Chan Show" was more fun because of the work dramedy.
