  • Mercedes Benz air suspension , known as Airmatic , dropping and you cant figure out why?
    After replacing shocks, bags, valve block, it cant be the compressor right?
    WRONG!
    I devised this test after a recent car drove me insane. I HAVE to prove why something has failed, and this test is now added to my list of things to check on the air suspension. I hope this helps you!

    I wont lie, the rear air bags still needed to be replaced due to extremely fine leaks through the bellows. But if you have a sticking or leaking relief valve it will stop pressure from being built and actually lower the car if the compressor comes on and valve block opens. So add this to your toolbox of diagnostic ideas when it comes to airmatic suspensions. Hope this helps!

      I ponder bags must be bad as on locked car valve block is shut and all bags isolated individually from the rest of system in theory 🙂

    Very good video just had the same problem with a ml550 but it drops in the front compressor went bad then valve block psi was stuck at 507 psi so changed that now it rises but once I take for a ride it drops again I’m thinking I might have a leak that I can’t see on the airbag itself. But thanks again for video helpful

    Hi Lou, thank you for the video. My compressor on my W212 does the same. The pressure goes up to about 7.5bar and leaks away through the compressor to atmosphere once the compressor stops. I've replaced all the o-rings inside the compressor and it is still the same. You didn't end the video stating that changing the compressor fixed the air leak? It feels stupid to replace a $1000 component for a leak that could probably be fixed if you knew where to check. I'm still battling with mine. If I apply air pressure to the car compressor outlet, the pressure is lost through the compressor somehow and exits through the intake pipe, same as in your video.

    Hi Lou, thanks for the video on airmatics! You really explained the whole system very well. I’m driving a C200 equipped with airmatics. Rare as it is, it started giving me problems which my mechanics and I couldn’t solve. I wished I come across your video earlier. I’ve changed out 2 front suspensions, air compressor and valve block. However, the FR and both rear suspensions could not lower. We deduced that it was the valve block that was the issue after all the checks on the parts such as compressor, air lines and suspensions. While waiting for the valve block to be delivered, we left the car for a few days. We noticed that the rear suspensions dropped all the way, while the fronts dropped a little. If you could help, give us some tips to what could be the problem? Many many thanks in advance.

      Hello, well…… all of my tips are in my airmatic video my friend. I was very thorough in that video for a reason 😊.
      All I can suggest is to rewatch the video in entirety. And pay attention to the leak part. There are very few items in the system. The only time I struggle is with very random issues. Like right now I have a S class that keeps blowing the fuse and burning compressors but never happens here in the shop. So this is a head scratcher for me at the moment. But as far as dropping suspension, its either the shock/air fittings/air line/valve block. Also you cannot have once side drop without affecting the others. The car has to move. So best I can say is do my measurements check I explain in beginning. If you end up needing my help further you can find me on instagrams messenger. I do charge for my time. Time is one luxury I dont have.

      Haha! Thanks for the advice! Will rewatch the video again. Will get my mech to diagnose what could have caused the leak. Talking about fuse, I’ve blown an orange fuse twice, and it is this blown fuse has caused the FL suspension to drop. Still scratching my head what could have caused the drop as well… 😢😢😢

    The solenoid manifold valve spool is not seating fully in either direction? If it's a single or dual solenoid setup, it's either not seated properly in neutral(solenoid not engaged} or not shifting fully when engaged?

    what I don't understand is WHY only the rear dropped not all 4?

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  4 місяці тому +1

      I think I pinned the comment, the issue ended up being rear bags. The valve block locks the air . And the compressor valve should also lock the air which it did not. But the fix was the rear bags they only showed a leak
      After driving and getting the bags hot

    Another very helpful tip. Thank you. Can you do one about assessing mercedes shocks and struts with the airmatic. Will worn out shocks of airmatics operate like they do with coil springs?

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  Рік тому

      @@MasterTechLou I believe you, the shocks do last. Aside from watching for fluid leaking from the shocks, and high miles, how else can we tell when it's time to replace it? I've had experience with coils, when they roll like a boat and bounce a few times over bumps; does worn shocks in airmatics behave differently?

    Hey Lou, thanks for these videos. My 2014 E550 front two shocks are low in the mornings. Some days its fine, some days its low(slammed). It does have electrical connections on the front struts. When the car is low it given the "vehicle rising, do not drive" message. Once filled the car is okay to drive around.
    After the car is raised, when I disconnect the inlet line from compressor that feeds valve block and zap strap it with a balloon, the car periodically lowers the cars and fills the balloon. I did not disconnect any batteries. Is the car self levelling once parked or does this mean faulty valve block as the ballon is periodically getting filled with the car off?
