You are the best at explaining the origin of things! This video reminded me of El Dorado. Fun Fact: Oxford University is older than the Aztecs! Teaching started in Oxford as early as 1096, and by 1249, the University was officially founded. The Aztec Civilisation as we know it began with the founding of Tenochtitlán in 1325.
You're kinda right. Why just kinda? The Aztecs existed as nomadic people long before the founding of Tenochtitlan in 1325. Furthermore, they already lived in the vicinity of what was to become Tenochtitlan for at least 100 years before its founding, they were however dominated by other cultures at that time
Not *just* the Aztecs. "Many gods", "Logographic", and "Pyramids" are traits that plenty of mesoamerican civilizations shared, from the Olmec to the Maya. I think (from what I remember) it started with the Olmecs, and everyone else in the region ended up adopting their cultures and traditions.
Very few people, unfortunately, know about the Olmec. It is a pity, but understandable given how old they are and in fact predating writing in the area :/
Ok, it has been a long time, but if I remember correctly, X before a hard sound (like a C in texcoco) is the X sound found in "mix". The contemporaries of the Aztecs, Mixtecs, were pronounced mix + techs, or like in their word for grey (nextic). If it is not a hard sound, such as in the word for green (xoxoctic), it is pronounced "shoshoctic". There were other rules, like if the sound is aspirated or not, but I can't remember more.
You are right. X in Nahuatl, Aztec language is pronounced as /sh/. So Texcoco is Teshcoco, Mexica is Meshica, Mixtec is Mishtec and chocolate that we all love and enjoy was Xocolatl and therefore pronounced as Shocolatl
Awesome video! I wish you would have also mentioned the reason why the aztecs chose tenochtitlan where they did despite being so inconvenient. A hint: it's in México's coat of arms and is about another prophecy. However I guess that is not very related to the theme of the video and it would've made it longer.
Yup, that's the Spanish pronunciation of it. The actual "tl" sound is quite similar to the "ll" sound in Welsh, just as someone already pointed out in another comment.
It's not silent in all dialects. Actually, in the tenochca variety it certainly wasn't. It only wasn't pronounced like an English or Spanish l, but like the Welsh sound, as previously pointed out.
What I´ve heard living in Mexico I know 2 theories about wwhere the aztecs come from, the first is they where nomads in the Mexican Plateau then finaly they endend in Texcoco, then a Second one is that they come from the northwest swampy cost of the state of Nayarit due the similarities with the leyend (Even a twice of little towns in the area are named Aztlan), and some say they might be forced to leave because maybe the area were flooded in some time of the history. Even some people like to say the tonw of Mexcaltitán de Uribe is the Aztlan island
The seven caves and seven tribes of the Aztecs reminds me a little of the seven waka(or canoe) of the Maori people and the seven tribes that arrived in New Zealand around 1350CE. Aotea, Te Arawa, Kurahaupō, Mātaatua, Tainui, Tākitimu, and Tokomaru.
As a mexican I've heard that Aztlan is also the paradise for the aztecs. Kind of like the mount Olympus, heaven and all of that, but if I remember well there were no gods on Aztlan
Maybe the homeland was where there were a lot of mountains??? Like near the Caucasus mountains??? Like science or migration theories say that many cam to the Americas by walking across the ice bridge from the area of Russia and other prehespanic civilizations like the paracas people have from near that area similar genetic ancestry... and there are archeological finds in turkey for example... can't remember the name of the finds. Just my opinion, though.
I'm pretty sure Aztlan means north they came from Utah and speak a uto-aztec language. Aztlan is considered by many to be the part of México that is now U.S. territory as in "Aztlan libre" free Aztlan. Also in mexica the x makes the English sh sound.

Could the 7 caves be references to their ancestors being cliff dwellers? Since I think that was rather common in other uto-aztecan speaking people's to the north.
I think Astlan is in the Caribbean. I think something forced them to evacuate (flooding or overpopulation?), so they traveled up through Florida and around the gulf to get to the eventual Tenochtitlan.
