Mr Brubeck will be missed, amazing artist, and no doubt a fantastic father. Would have been 92 on the 6th of december 2012. And we are so damn lucky we have it all on tape. Thanks to all who made it possible to revisit and cherish our memories.
You can almost see him see him speak the language of jazz throughout this clip. It's a part of his very fiber and soul. You will be very sorely missed DB! RIP to a legend.
On this day in 1962 {June 17th} the Dave Brubeck Quartet, with Paul Desmond on sax, performed "Take Five" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... It was Dave Brubeck's third appearance on the Sullivan show, the first two times were on October 16th of 1955 and then again on the same date in 1960... R.I.P. Mr. Brubeck {1920 - 2012}, Mr. Desmond {1924 - 1977}, and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}...
the greatest most talented musical of our time. He wrote some of the most memorable tunes performed by the famous band of the time his music is what made many of these band and groups famous.
His music brought people together ... I remember reading a comment from him after he played a gig where both Reagan and Gorbachev were in the audience. He said he couldn't speak Russian but he understood body language and noticed Gorbachev was tapping his foot to the beat. I suspect this tune will be playing in Heaven now ... rest in peace.
I have heard this composition many times before, but this is the first time I have heard it with cello (and with a bit of microtonal playing inserted at certain places earlier in the solo) -- what a new introduction.
Just learned of the passing of Dave Brubeck. I'll be glad to put 2012 behind me - so much musical talent has been lost this year across so meny genres. Thank you for your service to America and your immense contributions to her Jazz heritage, Mr. Brubeck. You will be missed... David Warren Brubeck, December 6, 1920 - December 5, 2012
Chapeau bas Mr Brubeck : vous venez à peine de nous quitter , et vous nous manquez déjà ; votre classe et votre prestance , nous aurons servies d'exemple ; que le paradis des jazz mens vous accueille les bras ouverts !
I deeply adore this video. Dave is so old now but obviously draws his life power from the music. Look closer to his facial expressions during the performance, especially when the audience applauds. I hope he will be with us for quite some time. I really do so.
Wonderful. Thank you. I have seen Dave Brubeck with his nevew on contrabass and RSI Orchestra della Radio Televisione Svizzera Italiana, july 1993 at LUGANO ESTIVAL JAZZ. Italian speaking part of 🇨🇭🏞
What a beautiful demonstration of paternal pride as his son plays a magnificent contribution to one of the world's most significant pieces of music. RIP Dave Brubeck. Thanks for the memory of your concert in St Andrew's Halls in Glasgow these many years ago. bikemad
Fred Kaplan, in his book “1959,” describes the origin of “Take Five” this way: Walking around Istanbul one morning, Brubeck heard a group of street musicians playing an exotic rhythm, fast and syncopated. It was in 9/8 time-nine eighth notes per measure-a very unusual meter for Western music…. It was a traditional Turkish folk song, widely known-in Turkey.
Just incredible, they are better than ever at 90....wow.....This is RIP time so im taking five to run through many Brubeck songs today. Check out "A Train," 1966, just amazing. These songs really take me back, that time of tensor lamps, cardigan sweaters and fancy lighters in everyones pockets.
Celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the iconic Take Five, one of jazz gems, Dave Brubeck, 89, and much of the original quartet (on cello, son Matt), performed at the famous Montreal jazz festival in 2009. The Californian pianist died in 2012.
I saw this whole group (minus the cello) in 09 or 10, and I was right next to the stage, Randy's drumkit was in my face. What an awesome show. So glad I got to see Dave live.
Grazie.
Most astonishing performance of Take Five I´ve ever heard! And I agree, the alto saxophonist has an amazing sound! Very smooth and very rough as well. Very, Véry nice!

Mr. Brubeck was 91 here. God bless him.
89.
Through out in time the band proves to be like wine the more old the more fine.
Dave after 40 years still enjoying his fellow musicians. Just look at him beaming at the others. He looks so happy
what musical journey...this is the version that should have 5 million hits!!! DAMN, I'm so happy I clicked on this.
A timeless classic. will always, stop to listen to this piece.
Dave Brubeck passed away today.
RIP.
And many thanks for all your legacy.
感動の一言、また彼の息子も一緒にプレーをしているのがまた良いですね。
Great stuff seeing the legendary Dave Brubeck playing with his son. Brilliant.
Wow. To be 87 (in the video) and be able to play with such joy. Who cares if the song as morphed over the years.
60 plus years of developing your craft really sounds beautiful.

Incredible! Just as good as they were "way back when"!
It is very rare, but sometimes a song transcends several generations. May this one stay alive. RIP Dave.

Just gorgeous. IMO the best version of Take Five ever.
Anything with Brubeck is great, he never lost his talent, but Take Five without Desmond on sax could never be the best version IMO🙂
a terrific solo by his son. sorry I missed Dave when he was here in Vancouver in 2009; I found out too late and couldn't get tickets
And I love him :). R.I.P monsieur Brubeck !
