  • Memories are a constant theme throughout the story of Xenoblade 2. It ties in greatly to how the characters view themselves and how they regard their lives as blades. So let's take a look into the stories of Jin, Brighid, and Praxis/Theory to figure out why the game cares so much about memories.

If I remember everything correctly, Haze's death is more about Amalthus than the endless cycle of rebirth. Jin killed her because the Haze he remembered would have fought against the man who killed so many instead of serving him blindly.

There is the posebillty that Brighid wrote multipple volumes and the one she showed Pyra was just one of them.

Personally, I see Blades' past lives as like a lineage or family history. They're related, but not the same person. Praxis and Theory's struggles in this interpretation then start looking like "Sins of the Father," where someone is punished due to their parents' actions, or in this case, punished for their past selves' actions even if they were for essentially different people. Percival had a similar thing where he's sometimes treated based on his previous life despite also having pulled a 180°.
Probably the most interesting instance is actually Vess, and specifically her Heart-to-Heart. While she has no memories of her life with Mabon, she still reports a faint feeling of nostalgia for their home, suggesting that strong enough emotions _can_ carry over if triggered. This would also mean that Praxis and Theory would've recognized something about the other even if they didn't know what nor the events that made them bond initially.

Another note about Theory and praxis is that they are clearly designed to evoke siblings and the closeness of their relationships further evokes this.

I guess one of my favorite ideas is blades with ideals and personalities ingrained changing due to their current drivers. We see Brighid is similar or the same as she was before. Thanks to being passed down she never has any major changes to living conditions, values, or ideals as well as a diary. But it'd be so interesting to see a story where she is awakened outside of Mor Ardain and gets a hold of her journal after spending time with someone who is completely different. It'd be so interesting. Theory and Praxis on the hand have had major changes due to the values of the driver. But there are plenty of blade out there with ingrained values and personalities. How would blades like Godfrey or Perun handle being with a criminal or an evil person despite wanting to bring Justice? How would plant and nature loving blades like Floren react to being awakened by a driver from Mor Ardain (or I guess just Morag) who's people generally take up as many resources from their titan as they can and thus killing nature. Theory's personal feelings were so strong that she went so far as to essentially kill herself just to be with someone who she won't remember.
Also it seems that Blades retain some influence of their past lives. Looking at Roc of course who is of course very influenced by Vandham. These slight or major changes due to circumstance that these blades aren't ever allowed to remember or recollect makes for such interesting stories

This is one of those instances you know it's wrong but can't exactly say it
Knowing that blades get reincarnated but leave their memories behind is such a brutal cycle
