Lanz & Competition | Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Analysis

Lanz fits that protective best friend vibe a little too much like his predecessor. But he still comes through with his own theme of competing to a fault and not empathizing with those who don't want to compete. Just don't ask about Joran. This does overlap quite a bit with the Sena video but so be it. Their stories are similar and intertwined.

Memories are a constant theme throughout the story of Xenoblade 2. It ties in greatly to how the characters view themselves and how they regard their lives as blades. So let's take a look into the stories of Jin, Brighid, and Praxis/Theory to figure out why the game cares so much about memories.

15:21 the soldiers of aionios are raised so that they never question anything that would seem abnormal to us. Anything we see as unusual is just a part of life for them, like the giant sword or monster shaped mountains. If someone does question it, moebius kills them

I guess one of my favorite ideas is blades with ideals and personalities ingrained changing due to their current drivers. We see Brighid is similar or the same as she was before. Thanks to being passed down she never has any major changes to living conditions, values, or ideals as well as a diary. But it'd be so interesting to see a story where she is awakened outside of Mor Ardain and gets a hold of her journal after spending time with someone who is completely different. It'd be so interesting. Theory and Praxis on the hand have had major changes due to the values of the driver. But there are plenty of blade out there with ingrained values and personalities. How would blades like Godfrey or Perun handle being with a criminal or an evil person despite wanting to bring Justice? How would plant and nature loving blades like Floren react to being awakened by a driver from Mor Ardain (or I guess just Morag) who's people generally take up as many resources from their titan as they can and thus killing nature. Theory's personal feelings were so strong that she went so far as to essentially kill herself just to be with someone who she won't remember. Also it seems that Blades retain some influence of their past lives. Looking at Roc of course who is of course very influenced by Vandham. These slight or major changes due to circumstance that these blades aren't ever allowed to remember or recollect makes for such interesting stories

I don't understand people like you XC2 created the series core identity and its probably where most people started with the series with how much people had to push to get the original in the US.

That and P&M being added to Smash catapulting them into becoming relatively mainstream characters to the point that for awhile after their announcement as fighters there was a literal shortage of physical copies of XC2. XC2 is definitely the most well-known game (even if it isn't the most financially successful, getting beaten out by XC3) and P&M are pretty much undisputed as the faces of the franchise.

Considering the fact almost all the textbooks seem to "lie" or omit actually useful information regular solders from each colony probably just never thought about the ranking system. They've never had a reason to question it. Just like how Zeon and Kite had to learn how to make crops on their own. They had to actually think about it but when using the manuals it wasn't useful to them. Some eventually pointing out the flawed information. There seems to be some kind of buffer between "being a good soldier" and critical thinking. Under a flame clock these people straight up don't question what they are doing or think about why they fight.

For what its worth, in regards to the phantasm scene, those aren't the things in each individual character's darkest corners, rather they're what *Rex* thinks of them. The things he's afraid they think about him. That's why most of them are aggressively out of character suddenly, because they aren't what they actually think. This is Rex's perspective we're seeing, everyone else saw phantasms of their own, but their own fears and doubts that we aren't privy to, because they aren't the main character.

I greatly appreciate anyone who’s willing to dig deep into and understand the changes made to Phoenix like this; it’s why Turnabout Trump is one of (if not my absolute) favorite cases in the whole series. As a generalization, Phoenix and Apollo are on separate sides of the same adamant truth-seeking coin: Phoenix deferring to trust in/loyalty towards his client, and Apollo more cynically set and less likely to commit himself to any particular person, more willing to see the truth uncovered no matter whom it hurts. [Character Spoilers to follow] Phoenix didn’t merely learn to devote himself to a client from Mia- it was always a part of him. Look at his absolute loyalty to “Dahlia” and to Miles prior to meeting Mia. Even when the evidence pointed otherwise, he basically refused to believe that his girlfriend had anything devious about her (to the point that he almost could have killed himself in desperation to protect her), and when he found out one of his best friends who dropped off the map was suddenly a lawyer, he committed himself to college law courses on the side of his usual studies just so he could have a chance at connecting again. Taking on Mia’s mantra and having so many successes in his career only bolstered that interpersonal optimism, even though there were more than a few moments when he ought to have learned some caution. Then, the Gramarye case came around, and he didn’t have a choice: he had to lose. He trusted someone and he failed in his judgments. He was forced to become cynical, distrusting, realistic about the state of human nature. Now, his dogged pursuit of truth didn’t just have to put his own well-being at risk. Kristoph brought the battle back to his doorstep, and Phoenix had only one person to believe in: himself. It’s the logical conclusion to an idealist’s fall from grace when betrayed by the world around them. (And then Dual Destinies ruined it by hitting the reset button on his personality with little to no time to build Phoenix’s altruistic idealism back to health. 🙃) That’s why I love Apollo so much as a contrast character to the Phoenix we spent three games getting to know. Spirit of Justice gives us reason to justify a distrusting version of Apollo: orphaned as an infant, taken in by political rebels/refugees, eventually sent back to his home country to start over- so, basically, unable to really put roots down anywhere. He idolizes Phoenix’s legal record, but punches the man in the face when he realizes he was duped with phony evidence. He really doesn’t do jack-all to defend his own boss’s character when Phoenix accuses Kristoph; he’s too interested in the truth to have any emotional attachment to anyone stop him from getting the truth. On the flipside, his best friend gets murdered years later, and Apollo can barely hold back his suspicion and upset to avoid getting his coworker (Athena) tried for a murder he can’t imagine she didn’t commit. But after having time to heal from that, there’s SoJ again, with cases like having to defend Trucy and reconnecting with Dhurke, and Apollo seems to be learning how to tap into loyalty to keep him striving for the truth and seeing through false narratives rather than giving in to what seems like a sure guilty verdict. Anyway, dissection over lol. Thanks for making this video.

2:10 unpopular opinion: Am I the only one who ACTUALLY found this scene legitimately funny? 4:09 Which makes sense considering last chapter (canonically speaking) and into Chapter 8, Poppi’s “evolution” into being more human emotionally wise has reached its peak. Ergo, making her more human like in appearance is the natrual course of action for Poppi. That and Tora needs all the power he can get to help Rex and the others fight the final battles. Even if Poppi QTPI technically isn’t canon to the story, it makes sense. 6:09 Thus Tora is canonically the only party member in XC2 that serves as a Tank 7:35 Tora reminds me a lot of Asta from Black Clover in that regard. 8:18 If there is one thing I wish the Phantasm sequence did, it’s go into the physiological minds of the other party members. Imagine Nia having Rex call her out for not using her powers to save Vandham, Rex and the others when she should have. Or Morag with not being able to save Niail, with Rex “hating” her for chasing him down to get Pyra. Zeke having insecurities over his own strength, relationship with Pandoria, and his relationship with his father. Or Tora getting called out for his perverted antics… 8:34 You do have to keep in mind that the Tora talking to Rex in that scene wasn’t Tora. It was a Phantom of Rex’s insecurities and doubts. Not Tora’s. 10:41 Which a huge reason why Tora’s character takes a bit of an L for me. The ONLY reason why like him more than Morag is for two big reasons. 1. I love Tora’s premise as a character. 2. Poppi carries his character. In fact, Tora creating Poppi is the key player in most situations. Poppi was able to carry Pyra onto the ship in Chapter 2. Poppi being an Artificial Blade helped break free of Tantal’s prison cells (with help from Morag admittedly) and Poppi and her forms are unaffected by the Spirit Crucible’s Blade dampening powers (including Haze’s ability that Amalthus was using). And finally helping Rex and Pneuma stop Amalthus’s Titan Controlling Tower.

If by nature the soldiers want to kill, knowing only to kill and having no other option might not necessary contradict the motivation of having the option not to kill: 1. X is only half right about her claims. The soldiers of Keves and Agnus kill by nature because they have no other nature. We're talking about the subject of the video: the lack of agency and control. of Yes they kill by nature, but you're the one who decided this reality. 2. Just as human nature doesn't always wants things to change, human nature does change and wants to change. The entire premise of Mobius is for things to never change. They might in a twisted way just capitalize on that off chance someone is looking for a change. They're giving an illusion of choice: if you don't take it than things are as they should be. If you do take it you simply worth more in the long run. 3. It's to give a greater cause for the soldiers. That the war will end and is just. The illusion that progress is being made. Keves and Agnus fight with the illusion the war will end at one point, they don't know this entire war is rigged. Not killing can mean a lot of different things to different people. Some might take it as "We're so strong the enemy will choose to surrender, we don't even have to fight them", some as "We're important enough to get other people do the killing for us". For Valdi it means he can build levnises all day so someone else will take them for a ride and kill, a dream comes true. Having the option not to kill means a colony can focus on supporting, strategizing, coordinating, all to bring the war to an end. It means better structure for the entire army because now everyone are focused on just killing. You can't win a war with just killing, you got to have someone to manage logistics, someone to analyze intelligence, someone who can heal, you name it. Think of it this way: on the squad level, you can't have everyone be an attacker. Otherwise the squad won't last for long. They will be very good at killing things, but they can't push on for long enough without proper support. A squad must have an attacker, a healer and a defender to be effective (just like our ouroboros party). You can take this logic and apply it to the entire army: with Keves and Agnus be a squad and a colony be a single soldier. In order to stay alive, a colony must kill and fill their flame clock. Because of this, the best option a colony has is to spec into an attacker class and be efficient at killing things. The issue is that all colonies are now an attacker class. A good commander must have noticed that with all this killing the army doesn't act like a squad, this is always lone colony against another lone colony, a bunch of uncoordinated monkeys beating each other. A war can't be won like that. Having the option not to kill means the colony can be a healer or defender class and support other colonies in battle. It means the entire army moves together and supporting each other, and with that winning the war.

Around 5:18 As one of the few Lanz fans, i would argue, you are forgetting the importance of his side story, for this development, side story that can be access before the prision, and it recontextualizes the prision scenes a lot. It even reflex on the progress it will be done on the main story later on. Lanz as he became an Ouroboros, changed his post goal. Before it was being on the top, but now he is focusing on Freedom, this is important, because at this point he doesn't understand freedom, he just thinks is something he can fight and obtain through becoming the top dog, or being with the ones fighting the top dogs to obtain it, The City. This is where he begins to get out of his funk and beliefs, when he see's that The City training methods are the same... He feels lost "How can i become to the top dog and obtain this freedom, if im the same weakling that couldn't save his friend, and who am i allying with is the same?", and then Lanz meets a guy doing juggling for money and when he questions him, his answer throws him even more out of his funk "Why should i follow others?", this is *VITAL* for what's coming. Lanz it's completely out of his funk, just piss off at how confuse and disconnected he feels, and then comes this City guy to question him, after he everything he went through. This seens like a recipe for disaster, but then it enters the antidote, the one thing that can sometimes wake up someone, a mirror, Lanz finds Garvel who is stuck as who he could be. And suddenly he understand, no one can guide him, no one can free him, he has to do it himself. It's why when everyone is talking about the torpedo warp, they don't realize that since he left the last mission his mind just has been working and working for his answer, he wants more freedom, he wants more choices, he doesn't want to compete for the top, that's the illusion he has been following and now he is not going to follow anyone, he is going to go and grab it by himself. But on the prision he is again, confronted with how he appears to others with Sena, and now he knows it's his choice, opening up here, it's not just answering for Sena's sake, it's for his own sake, with Taion he tried to cover it up at the end, with Sena, he just lays it bare and willingly calls himself and her the mightiest of weaklings. Don't get me wrong, Lanz loves fighting, i think that of the main cast, he's the only one that i could see trying to make a living off rather then just using it while necessary. And then on the battle with N, that choice was probably be made on the same mentality as Jordan? Maybe, i would argue that instead of the reason Jordan gives, it's for the same reason that Jordan did it, because he care about his friends, and wanted them to be live, even if it meant his death. This is reflected when in the prision he says that he has been chasing for freedom and now that he lost it, he wants it even more. Because now he understands what freedom truly is, it's about your choices and consequences, it's something he always had, but when you are trap in a small room with the fate of a friends hanging and being able to do nothing because he doesn't have any way to use all the strength he has gather, he feels impotency of losing it. Finally his final encounter with Jordan, there he has now gone full circle, look at how he begins all the arguments where Noah is able to connect with him, that's no coincidence, Lanz is not good with words, this is clear, he can connect with Sena, Taion, Eunie, Noah and Mio when he is alone, but with a lot of people in front of him, he can't. And when he is thinking to himself, he tends to ignore everyone around him, focusing only in connecting with himself. But finally, after the whole discussion with Noah and Jordan that he allow to happen he gains the courage to take this freedom that he has been given and open up to everyone around him. And finally, in the end, that scene which is more for the viewers then the characters to make it clear, Lanz on his own way, apologises for his actions as a kid. It may came out as a competitive, but that's because it's the beginning and Lanz just isn't good with words when he has to be open up. I would argue that, the story is more about how competition can blind you to life, to how you live life, to how there is no right way to live life.
