- Harvest season in the occupied West Bank has coincided with the eruption of war between Israel and Hamas this year. Since Hamas's 7 October attacks on southern Israel, Palestinian olive farmers have seen an uptick in assaults by Israeli settlers. Uncowed by the threat, Rabbi Arik Ascherman, a veteran activist, is trying to protect the farmers: "In the field, we continue to see rampant settler violence. It's not checked," he says.

The settlers are one of the top problems here. Its a tragic irony so many of them have TWO citizenships: Israeli and some other country. Yet the majority of these indigenous farmers, the Palestinians, have no citizenship. If they are pushed off, that's it. They are goners. Rabbi Arik is a hero and so are these farmers -- the more they keep at this, the more vulnerable they are too violence from these settlers.

The atrocities in Israel followed by an ongoing massacre in Gaza are both hideous but they have reminded the world of such inequality that I believe now the Palestinian issue will never be forgotten again.
Hopefully pressure on the Israelis will increase to allow the formation of two states.

There is an interesting note update to this: Netanyahu was on Fox news 11/18/23 or 11/19/23 and stated to Fox that Gaza was supposed to be the Palestinian state but ruined that. None of the accords were geared toward making Gaza the Palestinian state per se with the exclusion of the West Bank. That deceit is finally out in the public and needs to be addressed. I am a Christian and the Bible specifically warns about oppressing the poor, mistreating people who are powerless and denying them justice in court. When you mistreat, abuse and dishonor the poor you dishonor yourselves. When you try to dehumanize the poor you dehumanize yourselves.

Before October 7, there were violations, arrests, and killings of Palestinians, so Hamas, a Palestinian resistance movement, came to respond to these insults.
But the Western media describes what happened as an attack and not a reaction to what the Netanyahu government has done since it took office.
Netanyahu delayed the two-state solution because he wanted settlement out of the desire for land and for the Palestinian people to be subject to him at all times

I just bought 6 bottles of Palestinian olive oil at the annual Middle East Children's Alliance holiday sale yesterday in Berkeley. My grandfather who was raised in Jerusalem and came to the US
in about 1905, used to go home every now and then to help with the olive harvest in exchange for some olive oil which he used to love to feed us American kids. It's good for you he said. He was a teen ager when he did that when he lived in Jerusalem. We lived there for 150 years and knew people from all cultures. Everyone was dirt poor and got along well. RIP Vivian Silver.
