  • In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Dr. Matthew J. Thomas, Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology and the author of the incredible Paul's "Works of the Law" in the Perspective of Second Century Reception.
Dr. Thomas joins us to look at the two perspectives on "Works of the Law" and what Paul may have meant - was he condemning all works meant to earn God's favour, or was there something else he was getting at?
In his book, and this discussion, Dr. Thomas contrasts the perspective on "Works of the Law" from the Early Church Fathers (those closest to the apostles) to the theology of Luther and Calvin and the Reformation. And how the Catholic Church fits into it all.
His conclusions, both personal and academic, are pretty incredible - and when we begin to explore how the Catholic Church shakes out in this debate, things get very interesting!
Make sure to listen until the end!

I started this video when you first released it, for some reason I only watched the first few minutes. I just stumbled on it again and I can tell you the Lord knows when is the right time to hear something. It was a true blessing and the what I needed to hear for the encouragement I needed today.
Thank you so much Keith for allowing the Lord to use you the way He does. Thanks for being that “Pushy” catholic.

Same here. Dr. Thomas does a great job of articulating the evidence rather than engaging in polemics or even apologetic for the Catholic/apostolic position. His book was extremely helpful for me to engage the sources. Thanks to you both.

Thanks for this conversation! I became aware of Matthew Thomas' book but I was too anxious to hear what it was about to wait to buy and read the book. Definitely will pick the book up soon though.

Faithfulness *≠* Works. Faithfulness is the *PRECONDITION* for Works. This is Classical Protestant Theology. Faith without Works is dead, and likewise, Works without Faith are dead.
"We confess with Paul that no other faith justifies 'but faith working through love.' (Gal 5:6)" ~ John Calvin, Institutes 3.11.20
"What is not helpful is when a Protestant view is portrayed as just faith alone without works in any sense, because the consistent, historic, Protestant position has been justification by faith alone, judgement according to works. So consistently, what the Reformers, and Puritans, and other major strands of Protestant thought have said is: When we stand before God on judgement day, our life will be evaluated on the basis, not of faith, but of works. And that is taught in many passages of Scripture like Romans 14 and many others. Now its complicated ... how we put all that together ... but the one thing that's clear is you need works, you're not making it to Heaven without works." ~ Dr. Gavin Ortlund.
"Works are necessary for Salvation, but they do not cause Salvation." ~ Martin Luther.
"No man can embrace the grace of the Gospel without retaking himself from the errors of his former life into the right path, and making it his whole study to practice repentance." ~ John Calvin.

Faith alone is very bad theological vocabulary because it is wrong. 1) It is very bad because the only place in the Bible where the phrase "faith alone" appears is in James 2:24 where God rejects clearly justification by faith alone so as a slogan is really fool. 2) Jesus teaches that there will be a final justification and that will be also by works, not by faith alone (Mat 12:37) and Paul teaches the same in Romans 2:6.11 and 13..
To receive initial salvation faith alone is not enough. Baptism is necessary (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16) and also repentance (Acts 2:38 etc.) faith alone is wrong and luther and zwingli had 2 different versions of faith alone. The greek word "dia" "through" is used in reference to faith in Ephesians 2:8 and in reference to baptism in Titus 3:5 so for Paul we were saved through faitn and through baptism not by faith alone.
      2) luther was catholic and that to say that the Catholic Church teaches that works cause salvation is an ignorant or a instrument of devil or a sick person.
      3) calvin taught that salvation can not be lost, this is a satanic heresy and this is related to final salvation/justification.

Regardless of what the early church thought, there's multiple reasons why this interpretation is off. Many Catholics agree that "works of the law" includes the moral law as well, including Jimmy Akin & Taylor Marshall. It's pretty clear from the text, especially Romans 7.
Jonathan Edwards had about 13 reasons from the context of Scripture that we can know "works of the law" included the moral law as well. Nothing has really changed to overturn this.

"Regardless of what the early Church thought" *Also every Protestant* "We're going back to the early Church." *Early Church contradicts their view on Baptismal Regeneration, The Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist, Apostolic Succession, A divine/human Institution, Rome as having authority over all Churches as Irenaeus, Ignatius of Antioch and others testify, devotion to Mary and the Saints, etc, etc* "Oh wait, nevermind they're wrong, I'm right because my favorite theologian enforces what I already believe in and OF COURSE it's because of what the text says."

let's get something completely clear: the early church is not the roman catholic church. the roman catholic church has added too many man-made doctrines to even be considered to be a Christian churuch.

Actually, early church is 100% Catholic because their teachings, which they were tortured and died for are the same teachings as today’s Catholic church and completely opposite of today’s 30K+ protestant denominations.

Was the early church calvinist (a 5 points calvinist? a 4 points? 3 points...?) was it arminian, was it pentecostal? baptist, reform baptist...? Read the work on baptism in the Bible and the first five centuries by Everett Fergusson an evangelical scholar or the book by David Bercot a patristic protestant scholar "Will the Real Heretics Please Stand Up: A New Look at Today's Evangelical Church in the Light of Early Christianity" and will teach you the truth, may Jesus bless you more.
