I grew up there. Lived at Smith. But that was long before the Corp of Engineers put the damn in at Martins Fork and diverted the road. Watching this video was like going home - Millie Ledford Lee
That road can come out at Sugar Run at Cumberland Gap. We come through Sugar Run and through Smith to Martin’s Fork Lake when I take my parents for a drive. That’s my Dad’s favorite drive anytime of the year.
Beautiful area! Beautiful lake! So great to see leaves on the trees again and all the beautiful redbud blossoms! Thanks for the beautiful ride Coyote! I'd love to see a train up there! Great video! Thanks for sharing!
If you look left at 4:55 is my old home! The one on Day Branch, right at the intersection of KY 987 and KY 3099, where my mom Jackie, my sisters Crystal and Jamie, and I lived at from late October 2000 to May 16, 2003, when we moved to Wallins!
Loved this video. We always went to the lake after a long day on the worksite. It gets hot there in July, and the lake was a great way to cool off. I remember when we made our first trip in 2005 that there was a rail line that crossed the road just before you made the first bend into Cawood. Next year, it was gone. Always loved this trip to the lake as the view when you approach is awesome. Thanks for the memory.
We were there this past February when we visited Wallins. An absolutely beautiful drive! The cabin you mentioned was so pretty and we slowed down on the way back to get a good look at it. We also stopped at the benches next to the river for a photo op. Loved that drive!
My grandpa was killed in the Three Point mine explosion in the 1940’s. You used to be able to see the sidewalks where the coal camp was. I have not been there for years so I imagine it is a lot different now.
Thank you so much for producing these videos. I'm watching from Monroe, MI, but my family is from Middlesboro area so I recognize a lot of the places you go to. Started watching you back when you were posting the floods a year ago. Keep up the great work
Thanks so much! It means a lot to us that people appreciate what we do. Hopefully our next couple of videos will be from Harrogate Tennessee and Middlesboro Kentucky, hope you like them.
My relatives the Smith's, Popes and Burkharts sold this land for the lake. I'm sure there were others that owned property the Army Core of Engineers bought. In the 1930s through the 1970s I had some wonderful times here. Thanks for this trip. B
Beautiful scenery but video was abit blurry while driving...perhaps sun reflection. When you stopped at beach picture was very clear. Just thought you'd want to know how your new equipment was working.😊 Hope you both had a blessed day❤.
You're right about the video, my windshield had a lot of yellow pollen on it and I think the new camera couldn't make up its mind whether it wanted to focus on the pollen or the road because like you said once we stopped it looks pretty good. I'm going to do a test video with a very clean windshield. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to help us out on the video, it's appreciated God bless you!
Reminds me of going to Buckhorn Lake, that was near where my grandparents lived. I've always heard about entire towns and things being submerged in those flood control or artificial lake projects, and still there, visible to divers. That may just be a story, though.
I don't know if it's true or not but somebody told me they often times leave structures like houses and Barnes when they created a man-made lake for fish habitat.
hwy 987 goes all the way to 119 just east of pineville. and seems like it crosses 119 makes a very large half circle and comes back out to 119, and that's the end of it.
Spring in Kentucky. Beautiful.
It was a beautiful drive. Get me little homesick for my mom and late dad's birthplace. (Knott and Floyd counties)
