    Hey everybody ... out of all UA-cam pro mixing tutorials, it is actually Warren’s that inspired me to calibrate my monitors even lower than I thought I should. In all of his vids, I kept noticing how nothing was ever ‘blaring away’, and caused me to think ... “Huh! Warren has such a good listening ear to catch all these frequencies at comfortable, lower volume levels”. So, in my smaller studio I have 2 sets of monitors for A/Bing (Focals/Events) calibrated at 75dbs, and now reconsidering 70dbs since my listening skills have improved by not cranking up volumes. His advice on headphone use is so good also. I’m aware that mixing at lower levels is not the same as producing the volume level, but The “Loudness War” of today’s music is unappealing to me - I remember in one of Warren’s vids he mentioned he sent one of his mixes to mastering engineers who remarked: “Why is this mix so low??” ... to which my personal thought was “Because Warren’s mixes are so clean with great imaging/phasing ... AND ... if Warren wants it louder he KNOWS easily how to do it!” I think pros like Warren down deeply are not happy about the ‘loudness trend’ of late, because they truly believe it’s all about good sound, a great mix, and NOT loudness. It’s only amateur culture that thinks “louder is better” IMHO. THANKS WARREN.

      Ann C You actually have a very good point. I suppose I see so many vids out there like “How to make your song Louder”. But yes...I even use iZotope Ozone 8 advanced which can help master for different avenues since our mastered Final is going to get compressed again anyway by UA-cam, Spotify, etc.

      Yes, Ann. Platforms are definitely doing everything they can to 'even' out levels. The issue we have now is that if you smash your mix to heavily it will actually sound smaller and quieter!

    I picked up Sonarworks Reference headphones version in their recent sale, since the demo was so good and my headphones have a calibration profile in there. It's only an EQ curve to boost and cut against your headphones' inaccuracies, but it's been transformative for me.

    Another list of great tips. Keep up the marvellous work.
    Yes, EQ is your friend, get rid of (or emphasize when needed) what should not be processed. Don't forget that automation is also your friend - if you need that special effect with a long tail or whatever, automate the corresponding parameters in the rigt spot of the track, you don't need to keep hi values the whole time and spoil your mix.

    Thanks so much Warren, I learn new things from every single video you make! Small question please: talking about listening level you mentioned (85db) how do I measure it in my room? Any advice on a good reliable db meter that I can use and trust?

      Hey Warren, thx for the awseome tip! I tried it with an app but I must say 85 dB seems fairly loud for me. I reached only 77-79 dB and that was already too loud. Is that normal? Mixing HipHop/ RnB.

      @@Producelikeapro : I haven't tried these apps, but I've read many comments/posts saying they are very unreliable and most readings are up to 10dB off. Better get a cheap device with +-1.5dB error margin ($20-30). Even better, one with auto-calibration (more $). Learn and respect procedure (distance, etc.)

    Great info warren as always..I like to share one of the best purchases I have made for my studio this year has to be Sonarworks ref 4 calibration software. and I got to tell you. nothing has improved my mixes more than having a flatter reference monitors and calibrated headphones. I tried treating my room and all types of adjustments, but this is the number one thing I have done to improve getting great mixes without worry of how my mixes will translate on other systems. Plus I still seem to get a full accurate sound when running very low monitor levels saving my ears from fatigue. Thanks again warren for all that you do and sharing your knowledge with us. happy mixing!

    It is very interesting what you have been saying about music Mr Huart, ever since I have subscribed. This has helped me immensely, with regards to my severe to profound deafness and my Hearing Aids, in understanding how sound actually works and why some of the frequency responses and phases etc, that others hear, affects me differently and more than others with normal range of hearing. I can't thankyou enough for being an excellent teacher, Cheers man !!!!!!!

    Hi Warren, great video as always. I know the guys from In The Mix, I follow them for a while now on their YT channel. You explained it right regarding the headphones question. I don't own a studio, so late night I have to mix with headphones instead of my Mackie's. But I always do 50/50 when mixing: 50% headphones 50% monitors. Friendly regards, Emiel.

  • @drofdissonance
    @drofdissonance 6 років тому +1

    Hey Warren. Traditional engineer here (not a pro mixer) just a slight observation. I often see audio engineers saying that the room reacts differently at different volumes. This might be perceptually true, but it's defiantly not true in reality. You can try it out for yourself, record your monitors at low and high volumes and level match the recording. I think you'll be surprised how similar they sound. Technically, rooms are a roughly linear system (like eq)

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 років тому +2

      Hi Connor, yes, agreed 100%! I may not have stated it properly when I was speaking about how low frequencies that aren't balanced at low levels get exaggerated at higher levels causing a different reaction. So yes, agreed, technically the room always responds the same way, the volume produces different levels causing it to sound completely different. Thanks for the great comment! You Rock!

  • @Producelikeapro
    @Producelikeapro  6 років тому +8

    Hi Friends, is your experience monitoring in your Room? Do you treatment? Do you listen loud for short periods of time? Everyone maintains about 85db, because that is where you get an even sonic landscape. Basically, everything sounds the way it should. When you turn your monitors up, it might be because you’re trying to compensate for excitement, you want more high-mids or it might be that you want to hear more low end. Please let us know your experiences!

    Hey Warren, Love all the info you pass on!...I had an idea, hear me out..lol
    almost every mixer talks about using reference tracks.I have a hard time hearing certain things doing that so...my idea is that you could come up with a song that solos every instrument at some point in the song but also plays the whole song thru. even though it would have to be one of your songs i'll use "don't stop believing" as an example. you could play 12 bars of the whole song together, the next 8 bars could be just the Bass, the next 8 bars could be just guitar, the next 8 bars could be just keys, the next 8 bars could be just vocals, the next 8 bars could be just lead guitar, the next 8 bars could be just drums, in that song each individual drum is hit so we could hear what each drum sounds like separately and all together, and what each part sounds like by itself thru our own speakers, since the song would be already mastered we would get all kinds of great info,
    NOW THAT'S SOMETHING I WOULD BUY!!! I'm sure others would too!!

    @xXValomatXx 6 років тому +1

    Hey, nice Video. Very important too… but i dont agree on what you are saying about listening at a very low level. For me personally listening (better: controlling) on a very very low level is the best way to determine the balance between low end and high end in the mix. i always finish my mixes by listening mono at a super low Level, so the low and the high frequencies kind of "Frame" the mix. It's hard to explain, but with my Adam s3 h monitors i pretty pecisely can tell wether the Low/high relation is okay or needs to be tweaked in a way… I used to do this with genelec 1031a too… after my experience controlling the mix with such low level lets the low and high end frequencies stay audible while the mid frequencies are already "gone". Can anybody relate to this, or am i an anomaly? ;) While mixing i usually listen on a moderate level so my ears "last longer". I almost never listen really loud… only in a car for reference ;)

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 років тому +1

      I always listen at Low, Mid and High levels. Low levels allows me to do small volume automation move, Mid Levels create balance of the sonic spectrum and high levels (for short periods of time) allow us to see how people hear in those situations!

    Another great video, Been looking everywhere for a lossless version of "Woman in Chains" and am feeling very discouraged about the industry. The iTunes version of this has apparently been "mastered for iTunes" because all of the dynamics are gone. There were some version on YT, each with different compression artifacts that I could hear, then confirm with my eyes with different chunks missing out of the spectrogram. Someone apparently made a lossless copy of the original vinyl that is supposed to be spectacular, but it's not available for sale anywhere, and can't even be found through less than official channels anymore. This is so saddening to me! A masterpiece like this can't be enjoyed or used to teach others to do great work because of greed. So, what is the point of us going through all this trouble and expense to make exquisite sounding music if iTunes, Amazon, YT or whoever is just going to mangle it? I'm not saying that it's right for people to not support the artists that put their soul into their work, but corporate interest in the bottom line is killing this art form from every angle. There's got to be a way to reverse this downward spiral and get things heading in a better direction.

    Ciao, pheraps I didn't understand well, but when you say to judge the sound response of headphones you need to listen much music you love with those cans, I understand the sense of using reference songs to compare for example the low end, but there is a bottlenck. If the quality of the audio system is not really neutral I will always have issues, I mean I cannot judge compare what I cannot hear ! I will miss crucial info so lost...

      You can use a Sound Level Metter. There are a lot of them and not expesive at all. Use one with dBA calibration which is for human hearing. Smartphone apps can do it too. I download the SplnFFT Sojnd Meter is free or very cheap and do the work too. If you want to use it, remember use the dBA calibration

    ;)

  • @lahattec
    @lahattec 6 років тому +2

    Regarding the phase stuff, a curious thing happens while I am trying my hand at mixing the "Wide Awake" song. I put the BX-Control plugin on the master bus. It has handy functions to select only the left or right channel to play through the middle, or mid or side to play through the middle. When I enable the left or right only, the kick drum sound got massively larger and stronger. I have most of the included kick drum tracks enabled in the mix
    I haven't had the chance to scrutinize that, but my initial guess is that there must be some phase cancellation issues between some of the kick tracks, or that some may need to have their EQ adjusted to move the focus to another part of the frequency spectrum.
    Your thoughts? Thanks!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 років тому +2

      Fantastic question! I would have to open your mix up to see what could be happening. You do sound like you have a low end issue, the best way to double check is to pan to Mono. If you go to Mono and the low end disappears then you will have some cancellation in the left/right channels.

    • @lahattec
      @lahattec 6 років тому

      Thanks Warren. I hope to get something I feel comfortable submitting to Feedback Friday soon (though I don't know how to upload it yet. Are there instructions somewhere for submitting? I haven't found that.).
      The mix doesn't loose anything in mono, However, I made a mistake in reporting. The part of the bx-control plugin I was using was actually reversing the phase of the left or right channel, not monitoring it. When that phase reversal is done the sound gets very boomy and muddy, but definitely more power in the bass that way.
