If they made a software together it should be called Kali-bration
I purchased the Kali LP6s as a result of your initial review of them, Warren. I have not regretted the purchase, and after watching this I'm even more confident that it was $300 well spent indeed. Thanks!
Really interested on the speakers and Reference 4. Thanks so much Warren, Sonarworks and Kali Audio!!
Excellent demonstration. The Kali's seem like they would be a great replacement for my 20 year old Event 20/20P's. I appreciate your teaching and sharing style.
Obviously we're biased, but Glenn Fricker did a side-by-side with the LP-6, the JBL 305, and those Events: ua-cam.com/video/0oKlh3aBsMA/v-deo.html
I've used reverence 4 for almost 6 months now. And I have to say that I'm really happy with it. I'm producing in a mid-small bedroom and had some trouble with the mid-lows before even after room treatment.
My lp6s just shipped today. And I just started using Sonarworks for the last two weeks through my akg 240s. And yes. It works.
You guys are all awesome. Thank you for all your contributions to guys like me in this world. Again, many thanks**
Hi Haurt thanks for presenting the video. Such a good experience in listening to your room along with the KALI speakers. It is worth listening to your discussion.
This is pretty cool stuff!! I had never seen this done before.
Thank you, mate. Enjoyed the review. The LP6 is impressive indeed.
Just installed a pair of LP-8’s in my space. It’s only been 2 days, but I love them so far.
Thanks! You're the best, seriously. Such an invaluable resource.
I recently purchased Sonarworks 5 and used it to Calibrate both my CLA-10s with a sub, and my KRK Rokit 6 CLs. What an impressive difference. Can't recommend Sonarworks enough!
Warren, Thank you for your reviews. I bought the LP-8's after seeing this. Keeping my NS-10's but excited to try something new also. Keep doing these reviews they are great. I trust you and looking at the comments a lot of folks do. :)
What a great video. Got my speakers finally. They need setting up.
Awesome and interesting video, Warren! The party gets rocking at 21:26 wooo hooo. I could seriously use a new set of studio monitors. Thanks!
I’ve been mixing on Event 2028’s for years. When I’m mixing, I always put a reference track of a song I’m very familiar with (of the same style I’m working on) on the top so I can A/B my mix with the professional mix. It really helps my mixes translate better to the outside world.
The Sonarworks looks like a nice alternative to Genelec's room correction system (for those of us not using new Genelec speakers). The corrective eq should be helpful for getting a balanced direct sound. It will not change the variable decay times of a room across the audio spectrum, so ringing bass frequencies seen in a waterfall graph of the room's response will remain unchanged. That is where acoustic treatments come in, but building effective bass traps is difficult, costly, and takes up a lot of space if you install enough to be effective. Have you ever heard of anyone using a phase inverted delay to match and cancel the bass modes of a room? I'm not sure it would work, but it would be great if dsp could help reduce the long decay times of sounds in the 30-120Hz range. Achieving balanced decay times in studio mix rooms, home living rooms, and live venues seems to be the final frontier for sound quality and clarity.
Thanks Warren, Kali and Sonar works. I was listening with my Sony MDR-V6 and heard the mid range drop massively. I have been a big Tannoy studio monitor fan, but the Kali look really nice and sweet for the price. I know Sonar Works software is non monitor brand specific. I was also thinking about the NS - 6. I hear they are great for mixing since they are very, very flat.
I heard that when you first hear the NS - 6 or NS- 8 you are like what the snizzel ( sorry warren LOL ) since there are very different then anything you have heard before.
Great video. Would have loved to hear a pair of 550's in left/right ear positions to really hear the difference.
I think this with roomeq will have a huge impact on home studio response.
Have a pair of LP-6s that I've been loving in the 6 or so months I've have them... this is the first I've looked into room calibration software, but this seems like a steal for the price
great competition for project studios! Had my eyes on the LP8's for a while now
just to add its nice to watch your tastes change as you try new things and learn even after years in the industry.
Death on Two Legs!!!!! What a track. I can see Sonarworks being purchased very soon. That and some acoustic treatment for my room. Been hearing great things about the Kali speakers too. Great video Warren. Cheers!
Thank you for the video! Very informative. How were the DIP switches set on the backs of the speakers? Did you already adjust the back panel settings to be appropriate for the room, or were they set flat? Thanks in advance!
One of thee most important videos. More on this topic would be a great thing. Other speakers, amps, connection, how to correct, understanding especially what is perfection or optimum equalization and how to read it for exact product completeness. Other software or hardware devices in the home user semi pro range expense side for us common/uncommon folk. So, in the end, when the product walks from the room, everyone is satisfied, with hope that the product is not returned for correction. Does this make sense? More?
I just wanted to say thank you, as I have been interested in both companies, and all three products.
That is some extraordinary and amazing technology, very nice! :)
Hi Warren, Lee and Nathan, great demonstration, thank you all, Darren Ross.
Did you have the Kali Audio dip switches all set to flat when doing the calibration?
Mr.Marvelous!!! its been a long time! ive got alot to catch up on!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP!! you are a true inspiration!! i have been wanting to ask... will you be writing an audio/production type book anytime soon? maybe a daily quotes of inspirations libro?>.
Wow, Green Mountain State sounds glorious in my 6ft 3" high untreated, exposed-joist and brick-walled cellar! Ultra clean and natural-sounding.
Pete Dennis fantastic! I loved making that album! So incredible that it has done so well!
sonarworks is a great invention. i ve been using it .. great . worth buying if u r doing critical mix and mastering..😍😍😍
Good video! Would be good to know how to treat a room based on the frequency response feedback from the Sonarworks ref 4 : )
bumming I had purchased monitors before learning about Kali. When I add 8"ers, I'll look at them first. Learned about Sonarworks from a previous Produce like a Pro video. Love it. Just sounds right. I use systemwide, so listening to streaming or output from my DAW, I always have it on. Q for Sonarworks, on a Mac is there any advantage to using the plugin over systemwide?
Really interesting, I'm in a terrible space (bedroom producer) I'm sure this system would help a great deal
HI Warren…….I do use Sonarworks reference 4 in a pretty well treated Room but only at 70% wet... i find that at 100% the high's are way to bright …..over all it is a good tool to have….once again great video
If you use a console in your studio, how do you apply the software correction to the monitors that are connected to the console? I think this only works with a DAW and a master bus.
Hello....I'm looking for a seasoned opinion of weather to get the Kali Lp8's or the LP6's...? Thanks
So, the light blue curve corresponding to the frequencies of input single and the dar blue the frequency response?
If you use a mixing desk would you put the mike in a channel then to the computer , or just go straight into the computer ,when setting up sonaworks. thanks
Liked and shared. This software and possibly the LP-8s are in my very near future. :)
I think something interesting would be to play something relatively uniform, and move the camera (mic) around the room and note how the sound changes in the capture.
Getting these 3 guys in a room workshopping on this - I already won!
Where the mini DIP-switches flat on the Kali's? Would have been interesting to see how flat you could have gotten them with and without the DIP's, without even adding Sonarworks. I had a pair of Gennies I did this experiment with and was actually able to get them so flat in that room I didn't need the Sonarworks plug active in the end. Ordered a pair of LP-6, and will try that same method with my Sonarworks mic.
Great channel. My question is different. I own a pair of KRKs that I purchased in 2014. I get annoying radio station interference nonstop. I am guessing these must not be shielded properly or at all. Any ideas? Also, if there is no solution for shielding these monitors, are there others in the $400-800/monitor range?
I have a question:
I have a room and speakers that produce too much high end - meaning my mixes come out dull and dark. My speakers (Behringer Truth 3031A's) has room compensation switches for high and low freq - now I have everything on flat. Room is not good but with my current acoustic treatment and positioning it's doable. I have found a workaround for the high end in my mixes by tuning them with reference mixes, but would it help if I would turn down the high freq from the speakers? Or just buy tuning software?
Fantastic video as always Warren! Been looking at the Kalis for a while now and im stuck between the LP-6es and the Focal Alpha 65s. Any tips there? Thanks!
Hi Aleksander! Those are both great speakers! However the Focal's definitely a better option, but remember they are twice the price! So definitely get what you pay for!
So does sonarworks run as a vst plugin that you assign to your master outputs in order to apply the eq correction?
Sorry if I missed it do the monitors come with the calibration mic ? What was the make and model of the calibration mic, please.
So a lot of software echolocation with the mic seems to be involved. Interesting. I totally understand the value of it, however, I'm trying to reform from echolocating. 😂 I think I fell into the habit when my hands were full. I have been working hard this year to be mindful of my own tendency to emit clicking & chirping & shooping sounds. Trying to stop myself from mindlessly falling into that automatic pattern of just, "looking around." Trying to make myself gather the clues the way I mostly used to before I knew I could use echolocation -so- much. 🥳 🤣 I remember when I would practice silent, or "stealth caning," only listening to other things around me bounce -their- sound off the surroundings.
Love the sound of that Green Mountain State.
I have a question for Nathan Baglyos of Kali Audio.
I have a room that I will transform into a home studio with acoustic treatment. It's a small room: 3 x 3'8 meters (9'84 x 12'47 feet).
So, which monitors do you recommend (would be ideal or enough) for a room like that, LP6 or LP8s? I will put a pair of subwoofers too (Carl Tatz advise in PLAP following video).
Thank you very much!
I was debating 305/306p and Kali seemed iffy until I found out the whole story of how they came to be. I wasn't even aware you had reviewed them until last week.. it'll be awhile before I have the monitors but have joined the academy. What's good to work on in the meantime? As far as mixing exercises.
Saving towards the lp-6
@@Producelikeapro thats based off your reviews. I dont have much first hand experience with studio monitors but ive got so much confidence in your judgement. 👌
Wow! That's amazing to hear my friend! I"m honoured! I love them because they sound good and they are VERY inexpensive! I can stand behind them for pure value for money!!
Another cool giveaway, thanks Warren!
i'm addicted to giveaways until i win one :b
My sonar reference 4 software does not have Kali LP8. Calibration profile. How do I update the list to include Kali monitors? Thanks
Hi Bob, we created that ourselves! Run the calibration in your room and it will adjust accordingly!
I'm thinking about getting a pair of Adam A5x with an 8 inch sub in the future. I noticed you've mentioned Adam monitors in this video. I was wondering how you feel about them as a whole (adam speakers in general, or the a5x). Do you think they're worth the money? Any experience with them? Is 5" too small? And how do you feel about mixing with a sub? I hear they're very hard to find/ treat a room for. But I love my bass.
The Kali's are on my wishlist, but will remain there for a long time, unless I win them ;)
All the best.
You should do a video on nearfeild and desktop reference monitors. Like how to use them to mix mids and tell how often and when ubuse them. I know u wanna show off those genelecs!
Alot of the big name engineers I've worked for/with mix more on their small desktop speakers than the mains! I think alot of people do the opposite when first starting out!
I love all your giveaways, even tho i havent won one get. But this one is special to me cause first of all i have been really curious about theese språkets and second one of my current speakers actually just broke. So I hope I win this one even more than usual, but if I dont I just do what I gotta do and up my hustle go buy em way.
And lastly big thanks for all your great videos, I learned a hell of allt from you and your guests!
Hi Warren, fantastic stuff as usual! Off topic slightly but at 13:20 Nathan mentioned a place in Hollywood, where is he referring to there? Thanks again!
Hi Roy, that's my other Studio, Harmony. It's wonderful tracking room!
@@Producelikeapro Ah Harmony, didn't realise that was your place! So used to seeing you at Spitfire haha! Thanks Warren!
What is the main difference between the LP-8 and the IN-8 that hasn't come out yet? I want to get a pair of 8"s to go with the Focal Alpha 65 that I have. Just wondering if I should wait to see if the new ones are something to consider. Also, Sonarworks is great! I had the headphone addition for a good while and recently upgraded to the studio addition. It definitely works.
Hi Emily, the IN-8 is a CoAxial (dual concentric) tweeter that provides extra high mids so it becomes a three way.
Great video! How do the LP6's compare to the equivalent krk rocket? I have used the rockets for years as they translate well to high end hifi but would like something more accurate but still nice to listen to. My room is less than ideal unfortunately, it is well treated though!
Glenn Fricker did a side by side comparison: ua-cam.com/video/vZK2hGGtGSE/v-deo.html
Thought I was watching an old doctor who episode there when he was calibrating those monitors, they should of named that mic the sonic screwdriver lol
When Tie Your Mother Down started I couldn't help but jump out of my chair here in the office. My colleagues must think I'm crazy! But hey, better being crazy listening to Queen than having a boring lunch break, haha! Thanks for this rather "correctional" video :-) I really like Reference 4, it made a huge difference in my mixing room (after installing bass traps and mid-range absorbers)! The low mids are much more under control now.
One question though: do I really need that 6 to 8 dB of "headroom" in the software? I turned it up to -1 dB and didn't realize any distortion or coloration...
@@kaliaudio Haha, yes, once you're in Produce Like A Pro you'll never get out! But I can live with that! :-)
warren what are distances on your speakers and to ur sweet spot?
Very nice tools! So basically this software is doing what one would do with an RTA, cabilbration mic, and graphic eq, yes? In the past I would measure the room, see the results on the RTA, then use a graphic eq to boost/cut any nasty frequencies. This software applies correction via your DAW?
RTA measures one spot, whilst Reference 4 takes 34 measurements and averages them depending on their position. Using an RTA won’t be able to correct timing differences between the channels as well. As for where the correction is applied, Systemwide app can do it for the whole OS audio. If zero latency is something you require, then a DAW plug-in will be better.
I may have missed it or it might not have been addressed. Were the Kali speaker dipswitches used at all prior to the calibration using Sonarworks?
How does this work with a DAW. Is it just dropping the plugin on your master bus at the start of every mix or is it something always running in the background? Basically, could you clarify how this interfaces(probably not the correct term) with the other software.
Hi! You can use it both ways! As a plugin, last in the chain, and as main whole system output. It creates a new virtual audio device that bridges your audio interface of choice with Sonarworks in the middle
Planning on buying this software as soon as my finances allow.
Fantastic Jason! Wishing you and everyone else the best of luck in the give-away!
nice presentation. I have a question....after the speakers and headphones are calibrated, does the reference 4 software stay on or does it get put away? How does it actually fix the monitors?
I believe they measure where your speakers have bumps and dips. Then it uses a correct EQ to fix them.
Hi Victor, yes, the software stays active the whole time! I hope that helps!
I had a chance to audition the LP-8's at a local studio recently and was genuinely shocked by how well they held their own next to Genelec 1031A's, which I've been mixing on for decades, and were 10 times the price. I'm a fan of the Sonarworks software as well, but it can't work miracles. In a room with truly horrible acoustics, the frequency response issues are largely caused by reflections - a time domain problem. Trying to rectify a time domain problem by altering the frequency response of the monitors with EQ can actually do more harm than good. It's the equivalent of treating a gunshot wound to the chest by putting on a clean shirt. I have NO doubt Warren already knows this, but maybe some of his viewers don't.
TC Mixpro yes, indeed. They are remarkably good for the price! I’m extremely impressed! I love being able to recommend them and feel confident that someone is going to get great value for money!
@@Producelikeapro Thanks for the reply, and the informative videos. I might pick up a pair of LP-8's myself... they really are a lotta bang for the buck.
The thing with reflections is that not all of them work in the same manner. If they reach your ears 25ms or less after the direct signal, your brain will basically sum them up as one. This is how you get the peak from desk bounce for example. Now the thing is - you can EQ that peak away completely. As for late reflections after the 25ms treshold, that’s where treatment has to come in. Getting that RT30 in check will help with hearing your mix as it is tremendously.
“Calibration Collaboration” surely could of been worked into the title? 😂
Did the mic come with the speakers? What kind of mic was that?
Awesome!
Did you calibrate your iLouds at your mix desk?
What is better for a small-ish room, 9.5' x 11' (8' ceiling), the LP8 or the LP6 with a good sub-woofer (that can switch in and out), reasonably well treated?
I am well but for the rain that has been disrupting my work (outside job). But I guess I can make sacrifices for a desperately thirsty California.
It depends how loud you like to listen and how much you’re willing to work to get that sub integrated right. LP8’s will go louder than LP6’s, but that 8” woofer won't replace a sub.
These would be for mixing monitors in a home studio so average 85db and maybe a little louder. I will have another system for "Wow" loud.
Get the sub and LP6’s then. Just take care with integrating the sub right.
Ohhhhh, 23:00 ish, I see Trevor Hall on the screen, and my heart is so happy even before you pressed play!
1st place: Kali
2nd place: The angels in Heaven singing Bohemian Rhapsody directly in your ear
3rd place: Those new Adams are pretty good.
Adam's are like 3 times the price too tho lol! Dont think they have the same calibration capabilities either...
How would one use this software when I have 3 different monitors I switch through while mixing?
You can create multiple profiles in Sonarworks. Just switch your profile when you switch monitors.
Can the Sonarworks software measure a room if you are using a pair of near-field monitors and a sub?
Yes, indeed! I would ensure without the sub personally! This is a great question for Sonarworks themselves!
It will work with a sub setup, if you’re using two channels routed through the sub and then hi-passed over to monitors. As for assisting subwoofer integration, we don’t do it yet, but we’re thinking of ways how to assist people so they get the best out of their gear. Reference 4, however will help if your sub is badly integrated, but take care that you get it right.
Great video Warren as all ways! I have the headphone version of Sonarworks and it works great! But I have a question that maybe you or someone can help me with. When you are done mixing the song, do you bypass the Sonarworks plugin before you print the whole mix, or leave the plugin engaged when you print the mix? That's the reason I haven't submitted any mixes lately. Also I'm going to get a set of Kali Audio LP8 studio monitors as well as the monitor version of Sonarworks as well. Have a wonderful day as well.
@joseph valo you MUST bypass the sonarworks plugin in before you bounce. Then when you listen to it on your computer you can engage systemwide.
I saw ad to this program popping on my facebook page. It looks very interesting. Btw, the link doesn't work.
Hi František Švarc, would you mind checking that link again? I just checked it and it works great now!
@@Producelikeapro Checked and entered, thank you very much for quick fix and awesome giveaway. Started my way into mixing two months ago and your channel is awesome source of information.
Kali audio lp8’s vs Adam audio tv7’s. Which are better?
I currently have a pair of avantone mixcubes however I would like to buy a pair of Kali's however I am not sure if I should buy the LP-6's or LP-8's? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.
Not just trying to sell you the more expensive ones, but if you can afford the LP-8s, get them. They play louder, have deeper bass response, and much more dynamic range. All this makes it easier to pick up details in your mix.
@@kaliaudio so basically what is not represented on the mixcubes would be represented in the LP-8's?
Hi Friends! Please leave a ton of comments for the 3 of us below! We've teamed up with Kali Audio and Sonarworks to show you how to calibrate studio monitors to work in any room! The best part about this video is that you can win the new Kali LP-8's and a copy of Reference 4!
Hi Warren!
What are your thoughts on the LP-6's vs the LP-8's for a bedroom/studio environment? Would you take one over the other here?
Hi Jason, I've got top say the LP-6 is pretty darn amazing for the price!! Extremely impressed!
@@Producelikeapro Roger that. See you in the academy!
Thanks Jason! See you in there my friend!
Winning this contest could save me. Oh my goodness. Best of luck to all!
